Do you think that the quality of music has detiorated ?

Music has been made since the being of time. Some of it is really good music, but the most of it is crap. When it first started being recorded most of it was good music because just anyone could not afford to record their crap. Now all you need is a software program and a good mike to record then upload tons of crap....but in that crap their are great tidbits of wonderful sounds. I listen to 100's of live streams form many websites. I find lots of crap, but every once in awhile I found some really good music. One of the websites I check is AirPlay Direct.

I agree - far better without the bloody accountants trying to determine the artistic direction of an album. Most of them couldn't stay in the lines in a colouring-in book yet feel they are the best ones to determine what tracks go where. Just watched a documentary about Sheryl Crow. Every single major label said she did not have what it takes. Well she had one thing none of them had - determination - and it paid off. They say accountants rule the world - well look at the mess they've got us into with their potfolio of fabricated 'products'. Derivatives and all that made-up non-existent money market crap has really worked out well don't you think? By the way the cost of living is set to soar in the next decade - why? - hell someone has to pay for all the mistakes the money-men made. i.e. YOU!

Good rant, Jerome !!

Agree wholeheartedly about the financiers. Many should be getting put to the sword as we type.

In terms of music, I don't think acountants can stifle creativity. There is so much new music of a very high quality out there, that I'll never be able to track it all down.

Music's in rude health !!

I don't mind people making a lot of money out of a good product, but when you chase money just for the sake of having more money - that seems a little twisted to me. But then I am an unorthodox soul and material posessions mean diddley squat to me. If I have them good and well. If I don't - so be it. There's plenty to keep me amused apart from objects.

I have noticed lately that a lot of new CD releases are back to the 40-45 minute range, CH ! Maybe the record companies are hearing you ! It makes for a more compact product and much less boring....as per my thread about " please get it over with " !!!!!

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:all valid points guys!!!!.....but one point seems to have slipped people's minds.....

whereas vinyl albums tended to last not much longer than say 38-40 minutes, cd's last approx 75 minutes....almost twice as long as vinyl and artists/companies seem to think that they need to fill up the available space to create an album.
this way artists are always making 'double albums' in the old vinyl system....
and as we all know most double albums are patchy at the best with numerous filler tracks and this seems to be a problem with current albums on cd.

this would be a subject rather for an article than for a forum thread ...
there would be so much to say ...
I' ll try to make just a few points, almost at random :
#music coming to us from the past (Bach,Beethoven ...) has somehow already been screened and only the most outstanding has passed the test of time,
#contemporary music shows such a variety of genres and uses so many more instruments (acoustic, electronic, computer software ... ) so the quantity of music to digest dramatically increases,
#a huge quantity of musical products are not pure music anymore ... think of videos ...
#perhaps a better approach would be not to ask ourselves if the overall offer of music is of a higher quality today as opposed to Bach's time, but rather if we can make a handful of names ( really not more than three or four ) of composers that we beleive to be outstanding at the same level of Bach,Beethoven or Wagner in their time or performers at the same level or Yahudy Menuhim or David Oistrach
#enough for today !!!

I have always wondered what the great classical composers would have done if they had had access to synthesizers and modern technology. Maybe their music is so good because they had to focus on the one instrument under their hands as opposed to being distracted by technology?!!?? Who knows? Translating this same thinking to fine art - where are the Ver Meer's and Caravaggio's of the music world? As I have said before I think technology is dumbing us down. The more convenient something becomes the more the quality suffers.

That's an excellent point, great food for thought.
