Over the years I kept hearing Kraftwerk being mentioned as a similar act to Jean Michel Jarre, but never got around to listening to any of their work. My curiosity got the better of me early last year so I went over to YouTube and listened to a track and thought ''yeah that sounds OK''
This was the track performed live
So I then download a few of their albums(on the strengh of that one song) to get a feel of what they were al' aboot. I honestly can't fathom how anyone could compare ''Oxygene'' ''Magnetic Fields'' or ''Rondez-Vous'' to the thrown together noises that was Kraftwerk's albums.

I am saved. Thank you Lord. Yes Frankie - there is no comparison. You have now been elevated to the status of 'member who actually thinks and hears'. Congratulations. I can now cancel my therapy session. Welcome to the site BTW. Don't know if you have it, but Oxygene 7-13 is great. Don't tell CH or MH. They can't cope without words, which is why I have sent them both dictionary's for Xmas.

I really like Mike Oldfield so would love to have included him. But it's not a list of my favourites, but of artists who made the biggest impact or had the most influence.

Great though he is, for the majority of people he is remembered only for Tubular Bells, which is mostly seen as a fascinating and beautiful oddity rather than something that has shaped the course of modern music.

But if I was listing artists based on quality of their work then Mike Oldfield would be near the top, not just of the 70s but all eras.

If I'd done 50s then Elvis would definitely be included.

It hurt me to include Girls Aloud to be honest, but I just couldn't deny the impact that girl bands and female teeny-pop artists have made in the noughties (britney spears, girls aloud, sugababes) plus it represents the talent show phenomenon (Girls Aloud started off from a talent show), which although lamentable is definitely a major part in the story of music in the noughties.

When you look at the quality of the bands listed in the 60's compared to those listed in the 00's, it is quite depressing. God only knows what will make it onto the 10's.

Lol, thanks for the welcome(and the laugh). I have Oxygene 7-13, very good album. The Concerts In China(the one released in the 90's) gets a fair bit of playtime as well. I have a couple of very good bootlegs of concerts during 2010, very good sound quality and performance.

Sorry Goth Metal Raver for going off topic in your thread.

Oh I agree, he probably is only remembered for Tubular Bells and you are probably right to leave him off the list. Incidentally, if you get the chance try his 'Songs of Distant Earth'. An album that sold very poorly, but the one I think is his best work ever. 'Crises' is another beauty. I am not too impressed with his latest offering 'Music of the Spheres'. Believe he is putting a new one together at the moment.

I already have it. And it's one of my favourites also.

I also like Ommadawn and Incantations a lot.
