How Important Is Originality In Music?

Originality is very important. However, due to a lot of types of music, genres and song composition. It's really hard to make an original now these days. Sometimes, you create a song that is sound like one song before.

I don't think every artist strives to be a visionary in music per se, they just like making music they like.

I think originality in music is unimportant. I like my music to be good. That said, I can respect a band that tries new things rather then putting out the same record thirty times.

Eh, just because a band does something different or new that doesn't necessarily mean it's good. I can think of singers some other people like and who are relatively unique vocalists, but I don't think their singing is that great nor like it. I value creativity and the desire to experiment in music, but yeah it's not always successful.

I do that too. I may or may not like it, but I can at least appreciate what they are trying to do.

i'll just give anything a fair go whether its original or not...

but if I really don't like something musically I will give bonus points for a good vocalist.

I guess I will also give a band a go if theyre using real instruments, because they actually went out there and learned their craft (whether I like it or not), they sat down and took the time to write a set of songs instead of pre programming some stupid computer to create "beats" for them.

example, as much as I dislike the likes of Blink182 and Good Charlotte, they play instruments and write their own material, they get 5/10 for that alone because therye halfway there to being something I would like.

So does that mean you dislike electronic music then since they don't usually use any instruments? My sort of snobby attitude towards it is changing now though. I have been coming across some bands who use programmed drums though I don't get why if they have a decent drummer and they have one in real life who plays so. I do enjoy strong, talented instrumentation which is why I love bands like Earth, Wind & Fire.

As far as writing songs goes, songwriting is relatively important to me although I don't expect every artist nor band to be great writers nor poets so I don't mind if they have outside help that much. Of course, it's nice if they can write their own, but terrible lyrics can ruin some songs for me too. I have to think on that one.

at this present moment I dislike electronic music but I know one day I will hear one that a really like then backtrack through the genre and appreciate other artists...
when that happens I don't know, but at some point im sure it will...

that is part of the reason I listen to almost anything with my nw release listens, because I never know what is around the corner...
I could sit here and stick with Neil Young, Paul Weller, McCartney, Who, Motown, Britpop, Nick Cave, Costello etc forever and a day, but im always looking for the next sound I missed along the way.
