MAG2NYC Wrote:(something is wacky with the "reply with quote" feature, so I'm writing two separate replies, sorry guys!)
Steve O, I can't believe you posted the "We are Free" video! I just saw Gladiator for the first time a few weeks ago (I know, I know...I'm painfully behind in a lot of things, not just music *laughs*), and wept at the end when I heard that song! How lovely to hear it again! I'm going to listen to some DCD, thank you Zeus and jazzboCR for the suggestions and the links!!
You cried at the end of Gladiator?... hahahah , what a wimp
But I'll cut you some slack because I did too
BTW I don't even quite know what 'Ambient Pop' is . Ambient used to mean that stuff like Eno , then it meant lounge music for neo-hippies , but when you throw 'Pop' into the mix, who knows what comes out ?

You'd *better* have cried at the end of Gladiator, Zeus! Otherwise, we're going to have to have a little chat about...movies. *laughs* I cried at the end of Braveheart and Lord of the Rings, too, and I know that the music was a big reason why (well, for Braveheart the lines "In the Year of our Lord 1314, patriots of Scotland - starving and outnumbered - charged the fields of Bannockburn. They fought like warrior poets; they fought like Scotsmen, and won their freedom." can make me tear up without even watching the film). Holy moly, Steve O! I'm glad I'm not alone in this endeavor! I've got a list a mile long on Netflix, and there are a lot of 70s films on it. *laughs*
I almost went in the direction of movie music that makes you *feel,* but realized that we are talking about ambient pop here, so I'll stay on topic. (but I'm listening to James Horner's beautiful piece "Freedom/The Execution Bannockburn" as I type, and marveling at how a musical composition can evoke images and emotions. Amazing. http://youtu.be/0gXApvgxQH0)
And as far as that goes, Zeus, I don't know that I know what ambient pop is either. As best I can tell, ambient pop has a more ethereal sound, but that's so general I don't think it really "defines" the genre. There's a Wikipedia article on "dream pop" (which seems to be the synonym for ambient pop), and *it's* got a break down of the styles *within* the style. On some level, I think this makes is clear that trying to corral music into categories is like herding cats. *laughs*
Jerome seems to be the local expert on all things ambient, so perhaps if he has time and/or inclination, he could give us a rough definition of ambient pop? And if you haven't listened to the link to his music he posted a few days ago, you should! It's *beautiful* and very dramatic!
Cheers!

Deuter, from an all-time favorite cd , Land Of Enchantment
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I04laHMo9MM
Kitaro also recommended. Classified 'New Age' but don't hold it against them.
Not really pop either, LoE is as much World as it is anything , but you might like it.
I did listen to jerome's upcoming one and will be getting it

O'Steve , that vid "was removed" but I found another by him . I hadn't heard of him but he's great.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUSVzN7Nu1s It really reminds me of a piece I snagged off
the radio years ago (see below); I wonder if it's him . This same thing happened with Bill Nelson . I had an old radio tape for 20 years
with one strange, beautiful little thing on it that was a mystery until I found and dived into Bill's work .
I first heard Deuter on a local (weekly, electronic music) radio show about 30 years ago ; he also lived/lives up the road in Santa Fe . I really love his earlier ones that are more lively, musically ; more so than the later ones that are meant more as meditation music .
For a long time I thought of Deuter and Kitaro as the two giants of the genre , but I haven't kept up for years.
Def going to check out more Serrie !

Thx for the vote of confidence from both ZM & MAG2NYC. There will be no need for any of you (or any of the other regulars) to purchase my project when it is released. Not in it for the money, just a desire to actually finish a creative work. I will be giving away 1000 copies once it's done. (If I can find 1000 people to give them to!) All I will require from anyone who is interested is an address to send it to. This does not have to be your home address - just a physical place somewhere (work, the local GPO etc. etc.) As for me being the expert on ambient - far from it. I am an over-the-hill jack of all trades and master of none. I could not begin to advise anyone on what ambient pop is. The only thing I do know is that when I am working on something (not music related), or reading books, I find that listening to ambient music provides a wonderful backdrop. You don't consciously listen to it - it just floats around in the background. It's unobtrusive. That's the beauty of it. I discovered ambient music after a lady friend who now lives in Australia (and who was going through a bad personal patch) once said to me that she had chosen to listen to music that had no lyrics so that she did not dwell on the words or be constantly reminded of whatever it was that had gone wrong in her life. That's what turned me on to instrumental composition. The other thing that popped up in my head was the fact that instrumental music translates into any geographical location. Words require translation. Music only requires a response.
For those who are interested - I will be posting a different track from the album from time to time on the same page, so check back once in a while. A new one will be up tomorrow - 'Saharan Haze' Some have already heard it and some have not. As always, criticism and comments most welcome. You don't have to pretend you like it. Say what you really think. When you have been working on a project yourself for years you lose all objectivity and perspective. It helps when others point out the holes and glitches.
The artwork for the album is turning out to be a real challenge but I am leaning towards a 'Floydian' take on that, but without the budget!

I'll be taking you up on that , j. I like your approach ; just making the music for it's own sake. I do that too, since I have regular work doing something non-musical, and don't have much time to work on music . I also give mine away soundclick.com/darshelton , so there that is again for whoever .
I also favoir instrumental music , and since I couldn't sing to save a snot, I had to come up with guitar and synth music that interested me enough to keep praticing it (acoustic guitar) or save it and listen to it myself (synth , driven by arpeggiator software ) . That means putting a whole lot more work into a piece than some chord strumming and normal chord progressions .
I don't listen to much 'low velocity' ambient these days; not because I don't like it , but because I like spending time listening being more engaged . Anyway , again, I'm pretty vague on what 'Ambient Pop' should include; I think it could be highly inclusive of a lot of music that might already be thought of as being in other genres .
as a ps, I will get a couple of compilations together to trade you sometime .

I would definitely be interested in a trade or swap ZM.

Holy moly!! I'm absent for a couple of days and look at what you guys do! *laughs* I LOVE IT!! Jerome, I'm not a musician, so I don't feel like I can provide any kind of useful feedback other than saying how much your music simply *moves* me. I love going to your link ( http://auralscapes.com/) and just enjoying your newest creation! It's exactly the kind of music I love to listen to when I write.
SteveO and Zeus, I'm loving Serrie!! The videos are as wonderful as the music! I'm so happy that I get to listen to so many new things!! I have some new things I am excited to share, but I don't think they belong here in this thread, so I'm going to seek out their proper place!
Cheers!
