Naturally, Lou Reedâs bittersweet ballad ended up as a star-studded, back-slapping BBC corporate funding advert.
He was happy with the version though, and even happier when it was put out under the Children In Need banner and sold bucketloads.

band got their name from an old poster advertising Sinatra in LaLa Land...
their music,lyrics and persona was about as far from the clean-cut image Sinatra projected as you could get.

re-entered the chart following his murder and it became a huge hit.
obviously not thought of as a potential hit in 1971,became a relative minor hit in 1975, but took his death to sell in mega quantities...moral being "any old crap song will sell when you die!".
iva always hated this track with a passion, he made a lot of superior songs in his career but this is the one most remember him by!

released the same week as Band Aid's "do they know its christmas" and Frankie's "the power of love", so it was always going to be diffucult for at least one of the big three at christmas not to reach #1 with a festive themed track...
Wham! decided to promote the "b" side, the single stalled at #2 but still sold more than most #1's do, so i guess theyre not too unhappy about it!

theres very little of what ive heard by Cher(including the Sonny years) that i can say that i like...so this one comes as no surprise that i dislike it...
also, this was apparently the first track that used 'auto-tune'...all i can say is 'i thought theyre supposed to sound better with it,not worse!'
