BOB DYLAN "oh mercy" cd, 1989
his twenty-sixth...
barely scraped the top30 in US,AU,CAN but a top ten album in the UK...
a decent rockin' album from Mr.D...
nothing bad on here but at the same time nothing i would consider 'classic dyaln',
just an allround consistent effort.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
the lead off single:
We live in a political world
Where love don't have any place
We're living in times where men commit crimes
And crime don't have a face.
We live in a political world
Icicles hangin' down
Wedding bells ring and angels sing
And clouds cover up the ground.
We live in a political world
Wisdom is thrown into jail
It rots in a cell misguided as hell
Leaving no one to pick up the trail.
We live in a political world
Where mercy walks the plank
Life is in mirrors, death disappears
Up the steps into the nearest bank.
We live in a political world
Courage is a thing of the past
The houses are haunted, children aren't wanted
Your next day could be your last.
We live in a political world
The one we can see and feel
But there's no one to check, it's all a stacked deck
We all know for sure that it's real.
We live in a political world
The cities are a lonesome fear
Little by little, you turn in the middle
But you're never sure why you're here.
We live in a political world
Under the microscope
You could travel anywhere and hang yourself there
You've always got more than enough rope.
We live in a political world
Turning and a-thrashing about
As soon as you're awake, you're trained to take
What looks like the easy way out.
We live in a political world
Where peace is not welcome at all
It's turned away from the door to wander some more
Or put up against the wall.
We live in a political world
Every thing's hers and his
Climb into the flame and shout God's name
But you're not even sure what it is

Wish You Were Here - it's been a while since I listened to it properly, with undivided attention, and I'd forgotten how almost stately it is - love the unhurriedness of it all. Unlike myself right now, who is in a rush to beat the clock due to surprise load shedding. Terrible time slot this one - 20h00 to 22h30.

My desert island disc. Will never be without a copy of this no matter what. Also happens to be my favourite artwork as well. Not so much the burning man image although I wonder if that sparked off the title for the festival of the same name - but the image of the veil in the wind and the avenue of trees. That sums up the music perfectly for me. Did you hear the bubble burst at the end of 'Welcome to the Machine'? i.e the party's over and the bubble has burst. After the success of Dark Side, Roger became disillusioned with the business side of things and the record companies were smelling money. Lots of it. Hence 'Have a Cigar'. I know more about this album than any other in my collection and I cannot count the number of times I have played this over the years. My late brother introduced me to this album all those years ago and it changed my listening habits forevermore. It changed the way I perceived things from then on. And 'stately' is the perfect word to describe it. Now why didn't I think of that? It's so obvious.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM
favourite:
Well, I'm pressing on
Yes, I'm pressing on
Well, I'm pressing on
To the higher calling of my Lord.
Said, I'm pressing on
(Pressing on)
Well, I'm pressing on
To the higher calling of my Lord.
Pressing on
Pressing on
I know I'm pressing on
To the higher calling of my Lord.
Many try to stop me, shake me up in my mind
Say, "Prove to me that he is Lord, show me a sign" (a sign)
What kind of sign they need when it all come from within
When what's lost has been found, what's to come has already been?
I just keep pressing on
(On and on and on and on)
Pressing on
Well, I'm pressing on
To the higher calling of my Lord.
Pressing on
(On and on and on and on)
Pressing on
Well, I keep turning 'round
Pressing on
To the higher calling of my Lord
Oh Lord, yeah.
Shake the dust off of your feet, don't look back (don't look back)
Nothing can hold you down, nothing that you lack (nothin' that you lack)
Temptation's not an easy thing, Adam given the Devil reign
'Cause he sinned I got no choice, it run in my vein.
But I'm pressing on
(On and on and on and on)
Pressing on, oh yes, I am
Pressing on
To the higher calling of my Lord - (repeat ad lib)

PINK FLOYD "wish you were here" cd, 1975
thought i would revisit this after the chatter on here over the last week or so...
still dont like most of the opening track, but love the vocal part and the jazzy ending.
love the middle three tracks and again, dont like the closer...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
pick of the tracks on this occasion:
Welcome my son
Welcome to the machine
Where have you been?
It's alright we know where you've been
You've been in the pipeline
Filling in time
Provided with toys and scouting for boys
You brought a guitar to punish your ma
And you didn't like school
And you know you're nobody's fool
So welcome to the machine
Welcome my son
Welcome to the machine
What did you dream?
It's alright we told you what to dream
You dreamed of a big star
He played a mean guitar
He always ate in the Steak Bar
He loved to drive in his Jaguar
So welcome to the machine

KINKS "the village green preservation society" cd, 1968
their sixth and the start of a series of concept albums...
released the same day as 'the white album'...
universally praised by critics but failed to sell, in fact it only sold its 100,000th copy in the UK in 2020.
so, the concept is about a longing to get back to a simpler world.
i guess he got his wish with this album...
one of my 'go to' albums by the band...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
favourite:
We are the Village Green Preservation Society
God save Donald Duck, vaudeville and variety
We are the Desperate Dan Appreciation Society
God save strawberry jam and all the different varieties.
Preserving the old ways from being abused
Protecting the new ways for me and for you
What more can we do?.
We are the Draught Beer Preservation Society
God save Mrs. Mopps and good old Mother Riley
We are the Custard Pie Appreciation Consortium
God save the George Cross and all those who were awarded them.
We are the Sherlock Holmes English Speaking Vernacular
Help save Fu Manchu, Moriarty, and Dracula
We are the Office Block Persecution Affinity
God save little shops, china cups and virginity.
We are the Skyscraper Condemnation Affiliates
God save Tudor houses, antique tables, and billiards.
Preserving the old ways from being abused
Protecting the new ways for me and for you

BOB DYLAN "down in the groove" cd, 1988.
was never one of my go-to albums by Dylan and thought it was time for a re-appraisal of sorts...
Wow, what a pleasant surprise, had only intended to hear it once over the weekend but ended up getting through it half a dozen times...
never ever did i think i would do that as i had previously thought of this as a low point in his career but time is wonderful...
Dylan only wrote four of these and theres a 'traditional folk' song, not sure if the others are all covers or written for him...
this is a fine rock and roll album for me, good singing, melodies and tunes...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
one of the cool rockers...
and a good cover of this classic:

I didn't know about the bubble. Thanks!
The choice of Roy Harper for vocalist on "Have a Cigar" was inspired IMHO. He brings the just the right element of neurosis to the whole thing.
