I've recently been playing Janelle Monae's album "The Electric Lady" I actually find myself liking it, she has this fresh retro jazzy r&b style I dig. So this album will be a part of my music collection now for sure.

Enjoyable songs: Q.U.E.E.N., Electric Lady, Victory, Dance Apocalyptic.

I'm not familiar with Esperanza Spalding so I'll have to check her music out to say.

I checked out some songs of Esperanza Spalding's, she has a much more jazz oriented sound than Janelle Monae's which is more r&b with some funk fusion IMO. I like her voice too though.

The last couple of days I've been spinning Steven Wilson's album Hand Cannot Erase and some of his other album The Raven That Refused To Sing.

Something I've noticed about his work is that almost every band or project he does has a depressing element in it, I can feel it in Porcupine Tree, The Raven, and Grace For Drowning. He has so much stuff I have to take my time to familiarize myself with Wilson's music. I will talk more about these albums once I let them sink in some more.

So far, I think The Raven has some solid songs on it, my favorite being Drive Home and I like the title track.

Cannot get into Steve Wilson or Porcupine Tree at all. It's all technically brilliant and well produced etc. etc. but it just does not have that special element for me.

There are bands/artists that I can't get into, but other people do so. -shrugs- Steven Wilson straddles the line for me since at first, I didn't think I'd like his music that much when I started listening... it's not everyone's cup of tea. I do see elements it has, not sure about special though I do think he's creative and good at evoking melancholy in his music. It's unique.

Porcupine Tree has stuff I find interesting though I'm not into In Absentia that much since I feel it's a little messed up and not my thing and that's considered one of his favored albums among his fans. I think I prefer Lightbulb Sun and Deadwing.

To each their own, I guess.

My newest album discovery is God Is An Astronaut's All Is Violent, All Is Bright. So far, I think it's alright, has atmosphere, and it's good for background music. Post Rock can have gems and duds for me, but I don't mind this album. It's only been 2-3 days since I started listening to it though.

Edit: Oh man, I think I like their self-titled album too.
