What Are You Listening To?
#81
Jerome Wrote:Art Garfunkel - Everything Waits to be Noticed. Classy album - great songwriting. Highly recommended if you are a fan or want some easy listening. Not a bad track on the album.
Always thought Art made the S&G sound.
Paul obviously had the writing talent, but his solo work is lacking without Art.
Like the Angel Clare album and any Jimmy Webb songs Art covered.

Certainly not one of their better known albums. Still plenty of gas in the tank in '82, even their first #1 country album down the road, but this one could only manage a #17. One of the worst (Whatever, #7) and one of the best (A Child Of The Fifties, #17) released as singles. That last one delivers the nostalgia as they are so good at doing. Whatever was just a tad too corny along with I Don't Dance No More. The two tracks I could have done without. Very nice cover of Life's Railway To Heaven, the only thing not written by one of the group. Passes as a good Statlers album, but not up to par with their earlier work.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - I Don't Dance No More

Best Track - A Child Of The Fifties

I grew up a child of the 50s
Learned to dance to the beat of rock and roll
Television was my friend
I Love Lucy, Rin Tin Tin
Kissed my first girl when I was 10 years old.

Took a turn for the worse in the 60s
Saw some real people die on TV
I learned love's hard cold facts
Paid my first income tax
One small step for the man I'm gonna be.

I'll never feel bad 'bout the times that we had
I'll never look back in regret
The heaven you gave I will treasure and save
'Cause it might be as close as I get.

The 70s were 10 years of reruns
News of Watergate was nothin' new
The Democrats got it, we fell in love again
When Elvis died, we all knew that we could too.

Now I'm facin' the most of the 80s
Old enough to run for President
It's hard to think it's me, the father of three
Oh America, I don't know where it went.

I'll never feel bad 'bout the times that we had
I'll never look back in regret
The heaven you gave I will treasure and save
'Cause it might be as close as I get.

The heaven you gave I will treasure and save
'Cause it might be as close as I get...

Holiday i-Pod listening.

Reggae & hot weather fit like a glove, so this was the Reggae contribution to my holiday i-Pod. Superb choice for a hot day by the pool.

AllMusic 4/5 stars.

My own copy on shiny silver disc.

As reviewed a few pages back. Only things I'd add are that the Reggae influence is no more than the merest hint, and that this is a lot like a cooler version of Sade.

Bought on holiday, on the recommendation of the head waiter at our fave restaurant.

Mostly traditional Turkish Folk music, with a couple of more contemporary arrangements.

Turkish music sounds most like Middle-Eastern music to these ears. Assorted unknown blown, bowed, or plucked instruments feature, which sounds awful, but there's a haunting beauty to much of this CD.

I'm not even going to visit AllMusic to see if it's been scored (surprised to find the cover picture available on Amazon...)...

Kenny's fifth solo album, on his way to pop stardom, via the rock/country route. This one blends those styles depending on which track you choose. Only one gets my top grade, the country flavored Momma's Waiting. Kenny's on death row thinking about Momma, so sad. That song was originally recorded by Kenny's former group First Edition. No clip for that one but Buried Treasures comes close to a love track. Unfortunately three tracks totally suck, giving this barely a passing grade overall. Those are tracks where he attempts to cross into pop/dance area. Always a failure for me from a guy who does the country ballads best. The worst of those slips into the disco area, I Could Be So Good For You. The album made #1 on the country charts and #53 on the overall. The title track single also went #1 country.

Worst Track - I Could Be So Good For You

Best Track - Momma's Waiting

As I drive towards home I picture Momma waiting
She’ll be glad to see her big time boy come home
She gets little in return for all she’s given
And I’m all she’s got to love since Daddy’s gone.

Now I’m forty miles away and I’m still wonderin’
Why I ever told her I was doing well
When I first went wrong I should have turned to Momma
But it’s hard to get back up once you have fell.

It’s the last time I’ll see flowers in the morning
It’s the last time I’ll hear robins in the spring
It’s the last time I’ll feel Momma’s arms around me
It’s the last chance here on earth I’ll have to sing.

As I drive away behind me Momma’s waving
To a son who’s all he’d ever hoped he’d be
Now she’ll say her final prayers, “And go, meet Daddy”
And I’m glad she’s only seen one side of me.

Today makes thirteen years in Coleman’s Federal Prison
And tonight I’ll walk my last few steps alone
But I can’t help thinking somewhere Momma’s waiting
Once again to see her big time boy come home.

It’s the last time I’ll see flowers in the morning
It’s the last time I’ll hear robins in the spring
It’s the last time I’ll feel Momma’s arms around me
It’s the last chance here on earth I’ll have to sing.

LAURA MARLING "a creature i dont know", cd, 2011.

i was pretty pleased that some of you guys here picked up on Laura after i first posted about her last year, and i am proud to say that her new album is yet another feather in her cap and also potentially finds a place in your collection as it does mine, the girl who is only 20 is already a master of her craft as those of you who have heard her now agree.

ok, this is the third album in as many years for this now 21 year old folk singer from Hampshire, England....

and she just keeps getting better and better IMO, both lyrically and also with development of her musical style, gone are the atmospheric, sparse, emotiveness of her debut and second album and in are a few more meaty sounds.
although i think she still owes a lot of her style to Joni Mitchel and i firmly believe from what i know of P.J Harvey(which isnt that extensive) that there are elements of her songs creeping in here, its not a bad thing to sound at times like someone else as long as you have something new to add to it...and Laura does, and she thoroughly deseves to be placed alongside the folk greats of the late 60s and early 1070s.
the album reached a well deserved #4 in the UK, but a paltry #99 in the US....maybe in time she will get the success she deserves.
its bloody hard to pick a 'best track' here as they all are consistantly good, with no throwaway tracks(just like her previous efforts), tracks 1,2,7,9 and 10 all come pretty close to a "love" rating so ive got to give them 2.3, the rest all get solid 2.0's giving the overall score of 2.2 for this one.

this is one talented girl who doesnt need to remove her clothes and act trashy in her videos...guess thats the difference between talent and image.

do yourselves a favour and take the time to listen to this one and again i promise you wont be dissapointed with my recommendation!
