Yamaha CD player
Yamaha Amp Yamaha powered near-field monitors for mixing Sennheiser headphones Mission speakers for general listening and for my rare forages into vinyl listening a Linn turntable. Plenty of other music making gear but I am not going to list all that stuff. The list above is my 'listening' setup. Considering a really expensive pair of AKG's for headphone listening but not convinced that the price is realistic for what you get. Oh yes, also have a Sony CD duplicator to make rough mixes etc. Very basic, but does the job.

And for all those audiophiles out there who have those 3000/4000 dollar amps - open them up. Then price the components you find inside and see just how much you are paying for standard off-the-shelf electronic components. You'd be surprised at the profit margin. Not to mention those ridiculously overpriced Dr Dre headphones - consumer junk with a fancy name attached = rip-off.

I was thinking of buying the Dr.Dre headphones, mainly because of the hype about their apparent sound quality, that said, I would always try sound equipment prior to purchasing to see if it suits my musical needs....
If a buy a new stereo I always take half a dozen cds with me to hear the sounds on the system, but I generally mix and match components ie: Nad, Yamaha, B&W etc. Back on topic.... Have you used the Dre phones Jerome???? And.... Didn't Dre just sell the rights to Apple for a billion dollars US a few months ago? Neil Young released his own version of Ipod late last year called "pono".... It was endorsed by a lot of big names in the industry because of its apparent superior digital sound over the conventional digital devices available. Problem for me is that it looks ugly, sort of shaped like a Toblerone chocolate bar which makes it too bulky to fit comfortably into a pocket. Not sure if its readily available outside the US other than mail order though.

I have listened to them CH. I do not think they are that great. My advice - get a pair of AKG's or Sennheisers - there are various models/prices available.

I have 2 pairs of Sennheiser PDX-360 over-the-ear headphones and they do a good job. A most respected consumer Website has a surprising choice though: Sony headphones in the under-$150 category. http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-bes...eadphones/ Neither AKG nor Sennheiser made the cut for for more expensive corded headphones: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-40...eadphones/ It's Sennheiser for wireless though http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-wi...eadphones/ These folks exhaustively test whatever they are reviewing and I'd sure listen to their advice. back to the Dr.Dre "beats" headphones....
I had the displeasure of listening through them yesterday..... they were very 'tinny',all treble, no depth to the sounds I was listening to, then I tried on a pair of the Sennheiser's and the balance and depth of sound was very good.... the Dre ones I listened to were pushing the $300 mark, the Sennheiser's.....less than a $100....! just goes to show price doesn't mean quality....but im sure we all know that already, dont we?!

There you go. The Dr Dre phones should be called Dr Dreadful. I have been using pretty standard Sennheiser HD215's for a long time now and while they are not the best available they do provide a nice overall balance of bottom and top end. The Dr Dre stuff will cause ear fatigue if used over a long period of time. (In one sitting I mean). Comfort is another thing to consider if you are going to use them for any extended period. I have spent hours with the Sennheisers on my head - very comfortable.
Here's a trick that actually works - if you are going to drive a long distance, put cotton wool in your ears for at least half the journey - you will find you arrive at your destination a lot less tired than usual. The constant sound of the air moving past the car creates fatigue - even with the radio/CD player on.
