All Tori Amos songs - Ranked & Reviewed
#11
Yes, that's correct. As to how it would work. That's easy. I win the Lotto and you get to meet your idol. What could be simpler................

Jokes aside, I am not a big TA fan but Scarlett's Walk is a fantastic piece of work.

Scarlet's Walk is the best album imho. Glad you like it.
When I said "Not sure how it work", I meant how would you get that ticket to me, and also do they even sell tickets like that? That would be really cool :o

266: Fire on the Side
Y Kant Tori Read (1988)

"Purple sunset, orange moon
How can the music play
When the only band is made of gold
Wrapped around your hand
That I used to hold
Against my chest every night
But I can still hope
You will see I'm your home"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDAprC7nblE

Apparently this song has been popular lately. That's quite interesting. A few people may be surprised I'm ranking this higher than Cool on Your Island, but hey. This is my opinion. I actually don't mind this song - I'm surprised of some of the things I put ahead of it.

265: Song For Eric
Me and a Gun EP (1991)
"See you over the hill and dale
Riding on the wind I see
You know me, you know
Me like the nightingale"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBo3a-TPpzo

Me and a Gun was also voice only. It was significantly better than this however. Tori still had her "early voice" in action for this song...

264: This Old Man
Caught a Lite Sneeze EP (1996)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQPIItDz3oI
No new lyrics or anything, but the reason this is higher than Humpty Dumpty is because it has a more fitting tune. I won't say it fits completely, mainly because in some parts it sounds like she's just experimenting with chords.

263: All the Girls Hate Her
Cornflake Girl EP/God EP (1994)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgZehKAe_0A

Of the 2 songs by Tori where the solo piano tells a story, AtGHH is not the one I prefer. It has so many chords that don't work. I like the idea of a solo piano telling a story, but I'm not sure this is telling us all the girls hate her.

262: Home on the Range
God EP/Pretty Good Year EP (1994)
"Well Jackson made deals, a thief down to his heels
Had a long trail of tears
The Smokies could hide Cherokee bride
Her brave was shot yesterday"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltr68JGRi4I

Okay... make up your mind please, major or minor? That's the main thing that bugs me about this song. Other than that I don't have too much to say.

261: Hungarian Wedding Song
Caught a Lite Sneeze EP (1996)
"All the dead are coming
I heard they'll be dressing
Some kind of maggoty
Rolling with a froppity"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSY569ijr30

The ending is a bit abrupt. I like the piano part though! It's just really short and it needs to be longer. That's also what I think of Mr. Zebra, but that song appears higher in this list for reasons.

260: That's What I Like Mick (The Sandwich Song)
Caught a Lite Sneeze EP (1996)

"Pie and mash in liquor,
A-walking about in the rain
Readin' 'em books and comical looks
Pianos, trams and trains
Coals 'n' cockles and thunderstorms
And plays on the wireless and all
Grandfather clocks and coke and brandy
Fountain pens and Beano and Dandy"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5Snfr0vefY

Uh, what? I can't believe this is ranked so high xP I guess it's because I like the tune a lot. I'm just convinced she's talking nonsense.

259: Sister Named Desire
Talula EP (1996)

"Teach me about them old old words big brother man
In an elevator
Where somebody can get out
With the sound"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8D_-iRL8KQY

Um, random chords go away please? I like the lower piano part though. I do have a complaint about the sound balance though - the vocals seem a little too loud compared to the piano.

258: Ode to my Clothes
A Piano: The Collection (2006)
"Somewhere in the hills of Ireland
There's a Prada bag
And somewhere down the lane
There's a dog on Gucci lace
And sometimes I think that I
Will lose sleep at night
Because it's hard, yes it's hard
To say goodbye to my clothes"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipWWk_onzng

Okay... It's not as random as the sandwich song, but it's still downright weird. Relaxing tune though. On a good note, the next post will include the first song on the list that I can say I like!

257: Happiness is a Warm Gun
Strange Little Girls (2001)
"Happiness is a warm gun
When I hold you in my arms
And I feel my finger on your trigger
I know nobody can do me no harm"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uLymL9q5gs

I know some people could disagree with me here, but this song just drags out for too long. Yes, it's a Beatles cover, and it's pretty different, but why the phone call/recorded voice? And why the annoying singing? Ah well, it only just missed out on the good list.

256: Police Me
Abnormally Attracted to Sin (2009)
"Loaded, full of winter you are
Storming blackberry girl
Will you strike before he's
Loaded, full of winter you are storming"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urWMZbidrjY

I think the AATS album could do without 6 songs, and just work with the others. Police Me is a super weird song... the sounds and instruments used, the lyrics, the everything...

255: Way Down
Boys For Pele (1996)
"Maybe I'm the afterglow
'Cause I'm with the band you know
Don't you hear the laughter
On the way down"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtjO4JPUn1E

A nice little song, and it's the first one I like! I first heard this one on Tales of a Librarian, when she added a bit on the end with just the gospel singers. There's no point in linking it really, since it's not much different. I'm glad we're finally to the songs that I like...

254: Samurai
Caught a Lite Sneeze EP (1996)
"Done making a liar,
A liar of me when
To be happy
To be you"

Unfortunately there is no link. But this Samurai song is quite nice - shame there are 253 songs better than it.

253: Leather
Little Earthquakes (1992)
"I could just pretend that you love me
The night would lose all sense of fear
But why do I need you to love me
When you can't hold what I hold dear"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=athwHqqtSpM

Ooooookay, so this is going to surprise most Tori fans. Truth be told, I don't like Leather so much. It just gets a little boring after hearing it in so many concerts, and it just doesn't tell a great story. The piano part is pretty cool though, to give it a bit of good description.

252: Toodles Mr. Jim
Caught a Lite Sneeze EP (1996)
"That was toodles Mr. Jim
Mr. Jim died two weeks ago
And he taught me how to pick cherries
And I punched his daughter in the nose
Because she was mean, Mr. Jim was good"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kbpq42Gs6g

Just why the laughing at the beginning? Could that not have been edited out? Confused The song intro is kind of weird too, as is the ending. But when the song kicks off, yeah it's good. Definitely one of the better B-sides from Boys For Pele.

251: Thoughts
Me and a Gun EP/Silent All These Years EP (1991)
"Never a bird
Or a flower in the tree
Or the pain of the respect thereof
Yes indeed"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdd7xH-0O3k

Eh, it's okay. I've seen this in the high 40's before of someone else's list, and I think that's maybe just a liiiiittle bit too far. Yeah. It's okay...

250: Ode to the Banana King (Part 1)
Me and a Gun EP/Silent All These Years EP (1991)
"This is not a conclusion
No revolution, no
Just a little confusion
On where your head has been"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN0_s2YFrto

Hoo, that's an epic piano part... Oh wait, constant switching between major and minor on one key... Nope... It's a cool song mostly.

249: Bachelorette
Spark EP (1998)
"You must remember
You're a car girl, you're a star girl
You are at the door
The tide will turn
There's a window
There's a window"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr0rgBW1HyM

Hmm. It's a strange atmosphere. Tori mispronounces so many of the words, probably on purpose, but it's annoying sometimes. Also, no, it's not a cover of Bjork.

248: Beauty Queen
Boys For Pele (1996)
"Hey hey
She's a beauty queen
My sweet bean bag in the street
Take it
Down out to the laundry scene
Don't know why she's in my hand
Can't figure out what it is
But I lie again"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7Amt5u08I4

This song shared a track with Horses for some strange reason. A few people don't like Beauty Queen because it's creepy, but I like the eerie atmosphere. She plays just one note on the piano... She also changed it up slightly in tours. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHL6TxUHdlw ]

247: 500 Miles
Abnormally Attracted to Sin
"Step it up
Grab your phone
Get your suitcase
There's no time to waste
A big adventure awaits"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLVvcKdW7c8

WOW THIS IS HIGH. I might be giving a bit too much generosity to this song. And no, it's not a cover of The Proclaimers. The opening makes me cringe... although the rest of the song isn't so bad.

246: Twinkle
Boys For Pele (1996)
"Sure that star
Can twinkle
And you're
Watching it do"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp8xHPy137E

An interesting way to end Boys For Pele. It seems to start light, and end light as well (the album, not the song). The song has one odd Bnote that Tori sings, and it seems out of place, but other than that it's an okay song... at best...

245: Muhammed My Friend
Boys For Pele (1996)
"Muhammed my friend
I'm getting very scared
Teach me how to love my brothers
Who don't know the law
And what about the deal on the flying
Trapeze got a peanut butter hand
But honey do drop in at the
Dew Drop Inn"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLn2vkw3xR8

Okay, it all sounds nice, but it's this low because most of it sounds like the same thing over and over. The intro is ominous, and maybe unfitting? Eh, it can stay. I like it even if it doesn't fit with the rest of the song.

244: Fire To Your Plain
Abnormally Attracted to Sin (2009)
"Pray
You can pray to your Jane
I put out the call
But not to be saved
Called my devilling kin
With her yellow Aston Martin"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nfu_bcDk_I

Ehhhhhh I can't really explain this one much. There's just something that keeps me from liking it too much. Not sure what though.

243: Alamo
Talula EP (1996)
"Tears on my pillow
Of course they're not mine
Alter that altar
Making a play
Somebody invent the telephone line
I'll take my chances"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAQ_A91WA0I

Unfortunately there is no studio on YouTube, so enjoy this live performance. This is a really nice B-side, certainly better than most of those from the Boys For Pele era. The strong piano part. This was more like the Tori from before Boys For Pele that everyone liked. But wait... It's only number 243?
