Died on this day ...
^I'm not sure of the origins of the stories - probably her publicity team!

This is from wiki - "Stories published in the 1950s claimed that she was an Incan princess, directly descended from Atahualpa. The government of Peru in 1946 formally supported her claim to be descended from Atahualpa, the last Incan emperor."

Eva Cassidy died on this day in 1996 at the age of 33 from advanced melanoma. She had such a stunning voice, and such innate musicality – terribly sad.

From the compilation album of the same name – “Songbird” (written by Christine McVie) ….

2002: Lonnie Donnegan:
aged 71
cause of death heart Attack: whilst on his way to perform at the George Harrison tribute concert...
was a major influence of just about every band who emerged from the UK in the 1960s...
he was the first UK artist to score two US top 10 hits and back in the 50s and early 60s he was as
big to that era as the Beatles were to theirs...
he recorded his own material and traditional folk songs like "tom dooley" plus went head to head
on the UK charts with Johnny Horton with "battle of New Orleans"...Lonnie won that battle for the Brits
peaking at #2 over there, he also recorded numerous novelty songs like "does your chewing gum lose its flavour"
and "my old man's a dustman" etc etc...
highly underrated and under appreciated by the public at large...
here's one of my favourites from Lonnie Donnegan:

^Lol! Do you mean to tell me that you, a self-proclaimed punk pundit, failed to find this one??!! I’m shocked! Read and weep ….

Frederick Dewey Smith, aka Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith died on this day in 1994, aged 45, from a heart attack; he had been in poor health for some time.

He was a co-founder of proto-punk outfit MC5, and a respected guitarist, for which Rolling Stone gave him his due in 2003, ranking him 93[SUP]rd[/SUP] on their list of ‘The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time’. The bands he was with, or formed, after the demise of MC5 failed to find purchase in the biz, mostly due to MC5’s reputation, it would seem.

He went on to marry Patti Smith (who incidentally, was already a Smith) and settled down to working with her. Patti credits Mr Smith for inspiration and encouragement in her music as well as her prose, and has paid him specific tribute in her work a few times. He collaborated with her on Dream of Life and she is quoted as saying "Dream of Life was really more Fred’s record -- it was all Fred’s music, Fred’s philosophy", so……………., as MC5 just isn’t my thing – here’s a track from that album which was written by them both with ‘Sonic’ on guitar and production (Bob Glaub on the bass) … great song – beautiful lyrics ….
