UK charts overview for 6th May:

singles:

It's another big week for Drake on the Official Singles Chart, as One Dance fends off some strong competition to continue its lead at Number 1.The track logs a fourth stint at the summit this week, holding off a challenge from Calvin Harris and Rihanna's collaboration This Is What You Came For, new at Number 2.

And the love for One Dance is going anywhere yet: this week the song racks up 141,000 chart sales - it's biggest one-week total yet. It also sets a new one-week streaming record, notching up a massive 8.95 million streams over the last week, beating his own record set last week!

Meanwhile, Calvin and Rihanna's This Is What You Came For settles for second place with 107,000 combined sales, earning Calvin his 20th Top 10 single.
The rest of this week's Top 5 is made up of Sia's Cheap Thrills at 3, Mike Posner's I Took A Pill In Ibiza at 4, and Fifth Harmony's Work From Home at 5.
[h=4]New entries and high climbers[/h]Production duo Galantis earn their third Top 10 this week with No Money, climbing four places to Number 8, Beyonce's Hold Up moves six spots to Number 11, and DJ Snake's Middle ft. Bipolar Sunshine lifts six spots to 12.

There are three more big climbers on this week's Official Singles Chart: Desiigner's Panda vaults ten places to 15, Drake's Pop Style is up 25 spots to 34, and Nick Jonas' Close ft. Tove Lo makes its Top 40 debut, up six to 39.

he unstoppable Drake lands a big new personal best this week – his album Views goes straight in at the top, giving the Canadian rapper his very first Official Albums Chart Number 1.
Drizzy's fourth studio album notched up over 78,000 chart sales in its first week, making Views the second fastest-selling album of 2016 so far (David Bowie's "blackstar" is still the fastest selling album of 2016 so far).

Drake's hit the Official Albums Chart Top 10 five times before, most recently reaching Number 6 in 2015, with Future, on collaborative mixtape What A Time To Be Alive.
After a week at the top, Beyoncé's Lemonade trickles down a place to Number 2, while Prince's The Very Best Of also slips one to 3.

Billy Ocean returns to the Official Albums Chart Top 10 for the first time in almost two decades – Here You Are: The Best Of is new at 4. Scottish rockers Travis score an eighth Top 10, with Everything At Once going in at Number 5.


Following the chart success of their cover of Simon & Garfunkel's Sound of Silence, metal band Disturbed advance eight places to 13 with Immortalized, while Birdy's Beautiful Lies leaps 15 slots to Number 14.
US heavy metal rockers Tremonti score a new UK chart personal best with Dust, new at 16, while Rob Zombie also secures a new PB – The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic goes in at 25.
Legendary producer and musician Brian Eno scores his fourth Top 40 album with The Ship, new at 28, while Sixx:AM, the side project of Mötley Crüe guitarist Nikki Sixx, land their first – Prayers For The Damned is in at 30.

Irish country singer Nathan Carter is new at Number 31 with Stayin' Up All Night, and Prince's The Hits 1 collection goes in at 32.

Four albums make a return to the Top 40 this week: Bon Jovi's Greatest Hits rockets 54 places to Number 35; John Williams' soundtrack to Star Wars: The Force Awakens leaps 45 spots to 37; Charlie Puth's Nine Track Mind climbs 10 to 39; and Bob Marley and the Wailers' Legend climbs five to Number 40.

Australian music charts overview for 7th May:

singles:

A jump of four spots has given Drake his first #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart. It’s a #1 double for the Canadian rapper this week, with his fourth album Views debuting at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart. His previous highest peak on the Singles Chart was with ‘Hotline Bling’ (#2 Oct. ’15).
After dropping two spots last week, Desiigner’s ‘Panda’ has this week jumped up 18 spots to claim a new peak at #16. The track is currently sitting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
New peaks this week include Galantis’ ‘No Money’ (seven to #12), Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’ (up seven to #17), Little Mix’s ‘Secret Love Song’ (up two to #18), Luke Christopher’s ‘Lot To Learn’ (up six to #26) and Topic’s ‘Home’ (up eleven to #38).
Debuts:
#2: Calvin Harris Feat. Rihanna ‘This Is What You Came For’ – The first chart entry for Calvin Harris in 2016. ‘This Is What You Came For’ is the Scottish producer’s third collaboration with Rihanna, following on from ‘We Found Love’ (#2 Oct. ’11) and ’Where Have You Been’ (#6 May ’12).
#25: Beyoncé ‘Hold Up’ – A week on from debuting at #1 on the Albums Chart with Lemonade and at #24 on the Singles Chart with ‘Formation’, Beyoncé picks up another new Signles Chart entry with ‘Hold Up’. The track’s writing credits include Vampire Weekend leader Ezra Koenig, singer-songwriter Josh Till Man (Father John Misty), producer Diplo and the members of New York band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, amongst others.
#42: Ghost Town DJ's ‘My Boo’ – American hip hop group Ghost Town DJ’s pick up their ARIA Singles Charts debut with ‘My Boo’ The track, which was originally released 1996, has recently seen a resurgence on the back of its use in the Running Man Challenge series of viral videos.
#47: Anne-Marie ‘Do It Right’ – Anne-Marie makes her Singles Chart debut with ‘Do It Right’. The British singer-songwriter was the featured vocalist on four tracks on Rudimental’s album We The Generation (#4 Oct. ’15).
#48: Kungs ‘This Girl’ – The top 50 debut for French DJ/producer Kungs. ‘This Girl’ is a remix of a track by Melbourne soul band Cookin’ On 3 Burners. The original was released in 2009 and featured vocals by Kylie Auldist of The Bamboos.
#50: Blink-182 ‘Bored To Death’ – The first single in five years from Californian punks Blink-182. It’s the band’s first single to not feature original guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge. Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba has joined the band in DeLonge’s place. The band last charted with ‘Up All Night’ (#30 Jul. ’11).

There’s another new #1 at the top of this week’s ARIA Albums Chart, with Canadian rapper Drake debuting in the top spot with his fourth album Views (see below).
This week also sees a number of big moves including Adele’s 25 (up five to #3), Marina Prior & Mark Vincent’s Together (up eight to #5), Violent Soho’s Waco (up 21 to #24), Iron Maiden’s The Book Of Souls (up seven to #27) and Charlie Puth’s Nine Track Mind (up 15 to #29).
Among the re-entries this week are Adele’s 21 (#12) and 19 (#41), Andrea Bocelli’s Cinema (#38) and Rihanna’s Anti (#42).
Debuts:
#1: Drake ‘Views’ – The fourth studio album from Drake gives the Canadian rapper his first #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. It’s the follow-up to Nothing Was The Same (#2 Sept. ’13) and features the singles ‘Hotline Bling’ (#2 Oct. ’15), ‘One Dance’ (#1 this week) and ‘Pop Style’ (#44 Apr. ’16). In between studio albums, Drake charted with the mixtape If You're Reading This It's Too Late (#2 Feb. ’15).
#8: Rob Zombie ‘The Electric Warlock Acid With Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser’ – American musician and film maker Rob Zombie picks up his first top ten on the ARIA Albums Chart thanks to his sixth solo studio album. The Electric Warlock Acid With Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser is the follow-up to 2013’s Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor (#36 Apr. ’13). Zombie’s previous best on the chart was with Hellbilly Deluxe 2 (#23 Feb. ’10).
#9: Sixx:A.M. ‘Prayers For The Damned’ – The fourth album from American hard rockers Sixx:A.M.. It’s the second top 50 appearance for Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx’s side project, following on from Modern Vintage (#31 Oct. ’14).
#11: Graeme Connors ‘60 Summers’ – Australian country singer-songwriter Graeme Connors makes his first top 50 appearance since 2000 with 60 Summers. The compilation, released to mark Connors’ sixtieth birthday, includes past hits, fan favourites and new tracks. Connors’ only other top 50 appearance was with The Best... 'til Now (#45 Nov. ’00).
#18: Luca Brasi ‘If This Is All We're Going To Be’ – Punk band Luca Brasi make their chart debut with third album If This Is All We're Going To Be. Hailing from St Helens, Tasmania, Luca Brasi formed in 2009 and have released two prior albums; 2011's Extended Family and 2014's By A Thread.
#19: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard ‘Nonagon Infinity’ – Melbourne seven-piece King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard crack the top 50 for the first time with Nonagon Infinity. It’s the band’s eighth album in four years. Their previous best on the chart was with I'm In Your Mind Fuzz (#85 Nov. ’14).
#26: Olympia ‘Self Talk’ – The debut album from Melbourne multi-instrumentalist Olivia Bartley, aka. Olympia. Self Talk was produced in collaboration with Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, Jack Ladder, The Drones). Olympia will be touring the album nationally through May and June.
#37: Richard Marx ‘The Ultimate Collection’ – The first appearance in the ARIA top 50 for American singer-songwriter Richard Marx since Paid Vacation (#2 Feb. ’94). The Ultimate Collection has been released exclusively in Australia and features Marx’s biggest hits here including #1 singles ‘Right Here Waiting’ (#1 Sept. ’89) and ‘Hazard’ (#1 Jul. ’92).
#45: Patrizio Buanne ‘Bravo Patrizio’ – After debuting at #68 last week, Italian baritone Patrizio Buanne jumps into the top 50 with career-spanning compilation Bravo Patrizio. It’s Buanne’s fifth top 50. His first was with The Italian (#3 Oct. ’05).
#46: Bette Midler ‘A Gift Of Love’ – A new compilation from Bette Midler brings together some of her most famous ballads including ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ (#1 May ’89) and ‘From A Distance’ (#8 Jan. ’91). It’s her second top 50 appearance in a year, following on from the release of fourteenth album It’s The Girls! (#10 May ’15).
#49: Melody Pool ‘Deep Dark Savage Heart’ – The second album from Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Melody Pool. The follow-up to 2013’s The Hurting Scene is her first album to chart in the top 50.

This begs the question of what the purpose of the charts is. What are they supposed to be measuring, and how is the information to be interpreted?

The "official chart", in my opinion, is a load of twaddle. It is certainly measuring something, and would be correlated with how many times the song/album has been listened to - but does that tell you how much it is loved, or valued? When you can acquire something by streaming without paying for it, or paying a negligible amount, I would argue that streaming figures mean next to nothing. I have listened to heaps of music by streaming that I did not enjoy enough to want to buy it, some I did not enjoy at all. Nor is it a useful measure of revenue generation. This is tacitly acknowledged by the existence of the "total sales" chart, which I regard as the most realistic of the three, because it's closely tied with actual revenue generated by a song or album. It may sound shallow to suggest basing the chart on dollars and cents, but money is the way we assign value to products; by buying something you are saying "I like this thing, and I like it enough that I am willing to pay X dollars for it."

"Traditional" is relative. When people bemoan the state of the music industry in the 21st century, I always suggest they put it in perspective. Most of us grew up in an era when musicians, and especially record company executives, could makes fortunes by selling copies of their music on vinyl or CD that people could buy and take home to listen to whenever they chose, and we forget that this state of affairs only commenced about the middle of the 20th century.

I recommend everyone to seek out the 6-part BBC series "Howard Goodall's Story of Music", which can be found on Youtube (not available any more on the BBC site). In the introduction, he reminds us that in centuries gone by, people would commonly go for weeks on end without hearing any music at all. Even in the 19th century, you might hear your favourite symphony perhaps four or five times in your lifetime. The modern era of recorded music is very short in terms of human history, and it may be we will see a return to an earlier model in which most musicians are musicians part-time, and a select few are able to make a good living from live performances. Already we are hearing less of bands "touring to promote the album" and more of "touring to cash in on the album" - that is, the album is driving ticket sales, rather than the other way round.

now I did read somewhere a ew months ago (but forgot to post it here because I couldn't remember where I read it),
but one of Justin Bieber's songs which was #1 in the UK at that time actually did not sell a solitary copy of the song this particular
week it was #1, the figures were from free streaming, how bizarre is that...!

so,
the guy is at #1 and he didn't earn $1 in the UK that week...
therefore it was plausible that the artist who debuted in the charts at #100 made more money with his/her single that week than the so called #1 hit!
