What Are You Listening To?

DAVID BOWIE "stationtostation" cd, 1976

career stats:
studio albums.............27
singles......................121

this album...................#5 UK...#8 AU...#9 NZ...#3 US
singles:
"golden years"..............#8 UK...#34 AU...#10 US
"station to station".........no chart action
"TCV - 15"..................#33 UK...#64 US
"stay"..........................no chart action

David's tenth studio album....
only six tracks on this one, no its not what i'd call an 'ep'....
it does actually last the full time a vinyl used to last with one track,
the title lasting over ten minutes, and four others in excess of five minutes...
I love Bowie's music, don't get me wrong, but on occasion he tends to go off the deep and
and release material that is still David Bowie but also unlike him all at the same time,
thus, like Neil Young, he tends to release a lot of crap amongst the nuggets of gold...
this os one of those where he is pretty bad when compared to his best material...
and typical whereby even when there is rubbish on an album he still manages something special
in the good tracks...
I would have liked the title track had it not been blown out to ten plus minutes,
shortening it by half or creating a 'part one' and 'part two' probably would have worked for me,
but he is the artist and that's what he obviously planned on...
the other tracks I like barely make the grade except the ballad "wild is the wind", which incidently
was remixed and released as a single in the UK in 1981 making the top30...
only one I love on here in the funky/soulful "golden years" and really, this is the only track anyone really
needs of this one...
and another amazing thing, back in the day of vinyl he still managed to release four singles off a six track album
with one further track remixed and released several years later...

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

U2 "rattle and hum" cd, 1988

"when love comes to town"...#1 IRE...#6 UK...#23 AU...#4 NZ...#2 US......#4 CAN
"all I want is you"................#1 IRE...#4 UK.....#2 AU...#2 NZ................#67 CAN

band's sixth....
thought i'd revisit it after MH posted it and I said it was my favourite of theirs...
album isn't technically a studio set, its a soundtrack to a documentary on the band
on their US tour.....
album was panned my the majority of the worlds music critics...
mostly new studio recordings but also five or six live tracks also...
several covers, a duet with Bob Dylan (love rescue me) and BB King (when love comes to town)....
a mix of rock, traditional folk, and their usual sound...
album doesn't fair as well as I thought it used to, but then i went off these guys years ago,
mainly because of Bono's holier-than-thou, "i am God" attitude....
still love a lot of this album but equally, a lot I dislike now also...
so, if this was my favourite album of theirs I dread to think how the others I own would fare if
I listened to them again....

Boy, October, War, Unforgettable Fire, Under A Blood Red Sky, Joshua Tree.......all on cassette

Rattle And Hum, All That You Cant Leave Behind, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb......all on cd

I liked the singles off All that You Cant...., and How To Dismantle..., bought the albums from a discount bin, lots of filler IMO...

Pop/Zooropa/No Line On The Horizon/Achtung Baby, heard them, liked a couple of tracks off each...

heard that latest one also, but only because iTunes account holders all over the world were sent one free by iTunes as part of
the agreement with the band....didn't like anything off it at all.

I guess I I have nine albums all up I could be called a fan....guess I was back in the day

back to Achtung Baby....loved that single "one", awesome track....
John Cash covered that one on one of his "American Recordings" albums produced by Rick Rubin, his version was very good also IMO.

All That you Can't Leave Behind includes the song "The Ground Beneath her Feet" with lyrics by Salman Rushdie. Apparently this track is only on some editions, notably it is not included on the American release. That's a shame because it's one of the best songs they ever did.

^^ The only good parts of that song are the instrumental portions between the singing bits. Boring song, silly video.
