THE HILLTOP HOODS "the calling" cd, 2003
career stats:
studio albums............7
singles.....................20
this album..............#50 AU
singles:
"dumb enough"............... no chart action
"testimonial year"............ no chart action
"the nosebleed section"....#85 AU
album #3 for these Aussie hip-hoppers....
first two albums were released as mixtapes, this is their first on a proper label....
some really catchy stuff on this album, probably their most catchy album IMO....
third single, Nosebleed Section, only made it to #85 on the charts here but still
managed to go double platinum eventually...
probably my favourite of theirs...
best thing about these guys is that they don't try to emulate the American rappers
with their language and stereotypical themes, they keep it sounding Australian!
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Aussie rapper Iggy's one and only album so far.....
some of her rapping is quite good, that is until she wants to use foul language
like the Mikki Minaj's of the world!....
some half decent songs on here, the best on the album being her real breakthough
hit "fancy"....
about a year after she released this one she rerecorded it with a lot of "featuring"
artists...why?, because she could, and because she got known and others wanted to
record with her. on this one there are only a couple of 'featuring' artists
I wont bother that rerecorded/remix album, i'll stick to this one.

Yay!! Four years after his debut, Home Again, Michael Kiwanuka has, this past week, released his second album, Love & Hate.
Iâm not really sure how to categorise this as there are a few different elements involved, but a whole lot of old soul is what first comes to mind! And I mean that both literally and figuratively. Danger Mouse produced and played on the album and I can clearly hear his almost cinematic signature right from the first track. I feel a little conflicted about this; his involvement doesnât detract from what Kiwanuka brings us, and mostly enhances it, but itâs a very fine line, and having listened to both the album and some of the live sessions on YT, my personal preference is for the latter where thereâs slightly less of a definitive DM stamp. And speaking of the first track, itâs unusually long at just under ten minutes - the funny thing is, the time just flies by! Itâs a great, evocative piece with a fairly lengthy instrumental intro which, paradoxically, lulls as much as it intrigues.
Is there such a thing as measured funkiness? If so, thatâs what Kiwanuka has achieved here â never strident, well laid back and awesomely easy on the ears, yet all the while dealing with significant issues. Thereâs a lot more orchestration and choral/vocalise than on his previous release, and it all works just fine, IMHO - skillful execution which adds texture and warmth. In fact, Iâd go as far as to say, that with the exception of one or two tracks, listening to this album is like being enveloped in a big âitâll all be okâ kind of hug, and is prevented from descending too deep into retro fuzziness by select, spicy guitar work and some seriously groovy baselines. The only thing Iâm not much sold on is the album artwork, but hey â thatâs just packaging.
Mr Kiwanuka really can sing his soul â no doubt about that, and he has a recognisable, distinctive voice; he also plays a fairly mean guitar. Thank goodness heâs not copying, or trying to emulate anyone else, which Iâm sure is exactly where his charm lies â he sounds honest, as opposed to having been groomed and manufactured for mass consumption - how refreshing! Long may he hold on to his truth ⦠I hope he doesnât let others direct him too much.

That lovely ten minute opener I mentioned â another live studio clip, super cool ⦠better than the album version IMHO â¦
