UK songs chart for week ending 30th September 2016:



James Arthur makes a triumphant return to the top of the Official Singles Chart as his comeback track Say You Won’t Let Go claims this week’s Number 1.The song notched up 85,000 combined sales (made up of 41,000 downloads and 4.4 million streams) to knock The Chainsmokers’ Closer (2) from the summit after a four week stint at the top.

James told OfficialCharts.com: “This is incredible… I wasn’t in any way expecting it. I knew it was a good song and I thought some people might like it, but if you’d said to me it would be this well received, I would have thought you were pulling my leg.”
James is the second British act to land at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart this year. Back in February, Zayn debuted at the top with his first solo single Pillowtalk.

Say You Won’t Let Go is James’ second Number 1 on the singles chart, following his X Factor winner’s single Impossible in 2012.
Meanwhile, Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd makes an impressive debut with his new single Starboy ft. Daft Punk at Number 3, and Calvin Harris’ latest track My Way lifts a spot to 4.
[h=4]New entries and high climbers[/h]Outside the Top 10, Ellie Goulding’s track Still Falling For You from the new Bridget Jones film reaches a new peak at 11, and Matoma & Becky Hill’s False Alarm jumps five places to 28.

UK albums charts for week ending 30th September 2016:

It's been a close race all week, with the Top switching places, but Passenger has seen off competition from The Boss to snare this week's Official Albums Chart Number 1.
Passenger, aka Mike Rosenberg, scores his first chart-topping album with fourth release Young as the Morning, Old as the Sea, finishing just 704 combined chart sales of his nearest rival – Bruce Springsteen.

Speaking to Official Charts.com, Passenger said: "This is so unbelievably exciting!! When I saw that we were up against Springsteen and Shawn Mendes I basically wrote off any chance of getting Number 1 anywhere. It's a huge surprise and just the most amazing feeling! I think this is probably how Leicester fans felt last season :-)”

Bruce, then, is denied an 11th Number 1 with his new compilation album Chapter and Verse, which accompanies his new autobiography Born to Run, settling for Number 2.
Canadian star Shawn Mendes scores his first Top 10 with sophomore release Illuminate at 3, veteran rockers Marillion score their first Top 10 in over a decade with F E A R, at 4, and last week's Number 1 from Bastille, Wild World, slips to 5.
[h=4]New entries[/h]There are seven more brand-new entries on this week's Official Albums Chart top 40, kicking off with Australian rockers Airbourne new at 9 with Breakin' Outta Hell.
My Chemical Romance's anniversary boxset Black Parade/Living With Ghosts goes in at Number 11, while American rock band Warpaint are new at 13 with Heads Up.
American singer-songwriter Joe Bonamassa scores his second Top 40 album of 2016 with Live at the Greek Theatre, in at 17, and a remastered David Bowie retrospective collecting recordings from 1974–1976, Who Can I Be Now, debuts at 21.
Billy Bragg & Joe Henry's Shine a Light – Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad is a new entry at 28, while The Weeknd's Beauty Behind The Madness makes a return to the Top 40, rocketing 30 slots to 37.
Also staging a comeback is Bastille's debut album bad Blood, leaping 16 places to land at Number 39 this week, while Greek composer Vangelis goes in at 40 with Rosetta.

With its eighth straight week at #1, ‘Closer’ by The Chainsmokers has drawn level with Lukas Graham’s ‘7 Years’ (#1 Feb. ’16) for the most week at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart in 2016.
A jump of 22 spots has seen James Arthur’s ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ hit #3 in its second week in the top 50. It’s one spot below Arthur’s chart peak with ‘Impossible’ (#2 Feb. ’13).
In the same week its parent album, Illuminate, debuts at #3, Shawn Mendes’ ‘Mercy’ moves up 13 spots to #22, snaring a new peak.
The all-star country mash-up ‘Forever Country’ has jumped 17 spots from last week’s debut positon of #43. It debuted at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100.
With Young As The Morning Old As The Sea debuting at #1 on the Albums Chart, Passenger’s ‘Anywhere’ (#43 Sept. ’16) has re-entered the chart at #46.
Debuts:
#9: The Weeknd Feat. Daft Punk ‘Starboy’ – The title track and first single from The Weeknd’s forthcoming third album. It’s the Canadian artist’s first Singles Chart entry for 2016. He had four entries in 2015: ‘Earned It’ (#13 Feb. ’15), ‘The Hills’ (#3 Oct. ’15), ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ (#2 Jul. ’15) and ‘In The Night’ (#13 Dec. ’15).

The tenth anniversary reissue of My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade (#3 Nov. ’06) becomes the week’s highest re-entry at #15.
There’s been solid moves back up the chart this week by Ed Sheeran’s X (up 20 to #17) and Delta Goodrem’s Wings Of The Wild (up 24 to #18).
As Vance Joy performs at the AFL Grand Final, Dream Your Life Away returns to the top 50 at #41.
Debuts:
#1: Passenger ‘Young As The Morning Old As The Sea’ – The seventh studio album from Michael Rosenberg, aka, Passenger, becomes the British singer-songwriter’s first #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Young As The Morning Old As The Sea is the follow-up to Whispers II (#17 Apr. ’15) and includes the single ‘Anywhere’ (#43 Sept. ’16). Passenger’s first two top 50 appearances peaked at #2: All The Little Lights (#2 Apr. ’13) and Whispers (#2 Jun. ’14).
#2: Bruce Springsteen ‘Chapter And Verse’ – A career-spanning album from Bruce Springsteen that’s been released as a companion piece to his autobiography Born To Run. It contains The Boss’ earliest recording from 1966 and early songs from pre-fame groups The Castiles, Steel Mill and The Bruce Springsteen Band along with his first 1972 demos for Columbia Records and songs from his studio albums from 1973 until 2012. Springsteen’s last studio album to chart was High Hopes (#1 Jun. ’14).
#3: Shawn Mendes ‘Illuminate’ – Just over a year on from debuting with Handwritten (#18 Apr. ’15), Shawn Mendes picks up his first top ten appearance with Illuminate. The Canadian’s second album features the singles ‘Treat You Better’ (#4 Jul. ’16) and ‘Mercy’ (#22 Oct. ’16).
#9: Australian Cast Of Dream Lover Feat. David Campbell ‘Dream Lover - The Bobby Darin Musical’ – Soundtrack to the new David- Campbell-starring musical based on the life of Bobby Darrin, opening in Sydney this week. Dream Lover features 16 of Darrin’s hits including the title track, ‘Splish Splash’, ‘I've Got the World On a String’, ‘Call Me Irresponsible’ and ‘If I Were A Carpenter’.
#11: Tash Sultana ‘Notion’ – The ARIA Charts debut for singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana. The 21 year old Melbournian first made a name for herself in her hometown by busking.
#13: Airbourne ‘Breakin' Outta Hell’ – Album four from Airbourne gives the Victorian rockers a new peak on the ARIA Albums Chart. Breakin' Outta Hell is the follow-up to Black Dog Barking (#17 May ‘13), which was their previous chart peak.
#25: Every Time I Die ‘Low Teens’ – American hardcore band Every Time I Die pick up a new charts peak with Low Teens. It’s the Buffalo band’s eighth album and third to chart in the top 50. It follows on from From Parts Unknown (#32 Jul. ’14).
