MORRISSEY "world peace is none of your business" cd, 2014

solo career stats:
studio albums..................10
singles............................49

this album......................#2 UK...#58 AU...#14 US

"the bullfighter dies"..........no chart action
"kiss me a lot"..................no chart action

Mozzer's tenth and latest album release...
geez, I know guy invented "emo" but he's still depressing after thirty plus years!...
depressing but enjoyably good, and witty with his words like Oscar Wilde, must be a homosexual thing?!...
anyway, album contains all his usual sounds, moans and depressing lyrics, but I like it...
a lot of social conscience/political songs on here, which is the Morrissey way...
best track for me is "Neal Cassidy drops dead", for those who don't know, Cassidy played a huge part in the
'beat generation'/"counter culture" thingy of the 1950s/60, he was English but moved to the US with his wife and quickly became
friends with Allen Ginsberg amongst others, he had an on/off sexual relationship with Ginsberg until he died in the late 1960s...
sorry, just a bit of history on the guy becuase you might well otherwise say "who the hell is NC?"...
all up though, a very good album, unusual to see an artist over thirty years into a career still bringing out quality material...
and how does he keep thinking up those interesting song titles year in, year out????

second album from this Britpop band...
they tightened up their sound after the debut set....
a very good album of alt rock/indi rock but not quite as good as the debut...
still, their second best effort, from here on in it was all downhill IMO...
either way, Dr. John must have been impressed because they played on his studio album in 1998.

I should write a review of this, since I doubt very much whether any other members here have this, or have even heard of it. It's a bit premature for that though, because I've only listened to it twice so far.

"Folk-rock" is how Wikipedia classifies this band, and while it does not exactly fit my conception of folk-rock, I'm not sure how else I'd label it, so maybe that's as good a description as any. The "2" refers to the fact that it's the second album by the band under this name (Collette had released solo albums prior), but also to the fact that it's essentially a collaboration between Collette and Joe Talia.

I have come to Ned Collette's work basically in reverse chronological order, having picked up the third album "Networking in Purgatory" last year and finding I liked that enough to investigate the first two albums. First impressions are that they are not as good as Networking, which I suppose is as it should be - an artist should improve with experience - but still an enjoyable listen, and I think this is an album that will reward repeated listenings. It falls midway between folk-rock and experimental - which is probably why I doubt this band will ever have great commercial success. It is probably too "out there" for people who listen to mainstream commercial radio, but not progressive enough for the purists.

it must be time for that "review" bob_32?????

Irish alt rock band....
"final straw"....what a perfect name for a final album by a band,
but it was their third album and not last one...
I have this one obviously and the three that followed it...
hadn't really honed their sound on this one neither, that was to come with the fourth album
and the superb Chasing Cars single....
not a bad album though, and the least liked of the four I own...

IGGY POP "lust for life" cd, 1977

this album...................#120 US...#28 UK
singles:
"success"...........................no chart action
"the passenger"..................no chart action
"lust for life".......................no chart action

Iggy's second release minus The Stooges....
written, recorded and ready for release in a couple of weeks, Bowie and Pop
made a bit of a monetary killing on this one because it was finished so quickly,
they hadn't used much of the advance given to them by RCA so they pocketed the
remaining cash...LOL.
hi-energy punk/r+r on this one, moreso than "the idiot"....
this was the album that inspired Joy Division to pick up their instruments...
again, like The Idiot, Bowie wrote or co wrote eight of the nine tracks on offer...
album was just heading up the charts when Presley died, RCA turned their attention
away from promoting the album and singles to the more lucrative prospect of using their cash
to press and reissue the Presley back catalogue, so Iggy suffered with sales...
"the idiot" had the original version of "china girl" which Bowie later re recorded himself, and this one
contained the original "tonight" which Bowie later re recorded and it became the title track of the album
of the same name around '85 ish...
all up, a brilliant album IMO and it scores up there with the best of them

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

10th album and first in 5 years at the time
didn't sell that well but it earned Tom a Grammy
not as good for me as his first few
too stripped down probably

I do love this one

SUPERGRASS "supergrass" cd, 1999

singles..............................26

this album.................#3 UK...#15 AU
singles:
"pumping on your stereo".....#11 UK
"moving"..............................#9 UK
"mary"...............................#36 UK

Supergrass' third album....
often refered to in the UK as "the x-ray album"....
recorded after their stint in New Orleans with Dr.John....
not a patch on their first two albums (posted on previous page), which were, IMO,
two of the best albums to come out of the UK during the 1990s...
very little of the Britpop sound on this one...
songs are more polished as is the production, so that rough edge to their sound has gone...
in fact very little of anything resembling the band on this one IMO....
a few okay tracks but not one to write home about...

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

"planetary".........................................#151 UK

fourth and final album for these guys (they split in 2013)....
band was put on to me by MH at the beginning of this year...
I have a compilation and a couple of studio albums...
good alt rock sounds from this band IMO...
at times they do sound a bit like the likes of Blink182/Good Charlotte etc
but for the most part they have engineered their own sound...
this is pretty high voltage in places, there seems to be a sense of urgency on a
few of the tracks, urgency as in Sex Pistols urgency...
all up a fine album to make your last album, in the words of Neil Young...
"its better to burn out than to fade away"....

band's fourth set....
a vast improvement on their third, but not as good as their first two...
a slight return to their Britpop roots on this one, but only fleetingly...
a move towards psychedelia in places, and a few tracks that wouldn't be
out of place on a Kinks album....
not bad, but i'd stick to the first two albums for go to albums...
