What Are You Listening To?
I'm familiar with one song from Yes - Jon's solo projects not counted - but that's a superb one...

I know of 3-4 songs from this guy, but this one being the best

A first taste of Yes... (beyond Owner....)
Difficult to find a spot where to start from. Experimental, varying and shifting, reminding, mindbending and anti-mainstream....
Somehow I did experience a similar feeling like I did on my first attempts with Pink Floyd. I Couldn't really get a grip on the music. Things hard to chew don't swallow easily but on the other hand, it lasts so much longer...
My first reflections pictured a blend of PF and 10cc, with Jon's voice on occasions reminding me of Kevin Cronin...
I'ts hard for me to give a fair response but I can tell that much - I'm eager to listen more, hoping it will stick to me the same way PF did...

^^ I think 90125 is a decent album, though "Owner" is possibly the least appealing track on it, with the possible exception of "City of Love".

However by this time I think Yes had passed their creative peak. in my opinion their masterpiece is Going For the One, one of the few albums in my collection to which I give 10/10. There are no low points.

Try this for size:

This is really interesting and definitely a candidate subject for a separate thread...
Owner of a lonely heart is, dare I say, their most well known song... Maybe the only song by them known to the greater audience. And as in so many other cases, people that are "deep into an artist" - not saying you are in this case, Bob - or at least has penetrated beneath the surface of the common known, usually tend to judge the familiar one as the less good...
I know I should bring up some proof examples, and will do upon demand, but for the sake of discussion, can you agree with me on this or am I wrong?
I just came to think of an example where I'm the one dismissing the greater public success. Hooters '500 miles' was very popular some decades ago, but I never really swallowed that one, I was during a period of time a die hard fan of The Hooters but considered almost every other recorded song by them being that much better...
Is there a built-in mechanism in this, or is it only a matter of musical and lyrical taste?
In my opinion, Owner of a lonely heart carries many of those ingredients that in my opinion characterizes a good musical act.... A memorable chorus, interesting arrangement, a non predictable intro and so on... What is it with OOALH that you don't really like? Or are all the other songs on that album sent from above?

Time for a counterstrike now Smile

I never heard a song by The Hooters called "500 Miles". I can think of two songs by that title: one country song sung by many people, originally I think by Bobby Bare; and one by the Scottish duo The Proclaimers. I suspect you are referring to neither of those two. The only Hooters songs I know are "All You Zombies", and "And We Danced."

As for OOALH, it's not that I don't like it...had I never heard anything else by Yes I would probably say it's a good pop song, but it just pales for me against most of the songs from their 70s classic period, and even against much of their contemporary material from the 1980s when OOALH was released. Have you actually heard that album (90125) in full? If you check it out, you may or may not agree with my assessment of OOALH versus its contemporaries, but you should at least hear what I am talking about. There are at least five songs on that album that I rate higher: "Leave It", ""It Can Happen", "Changes", "Our Song" and "Hearts".

I will definitely give them a chance, starting with that album... Regarding The Hooters, that song is actually a cover... But not The Proclaimers version "But I would walk 500 miles...", maybe the other one... "If you missed the train I'm on... Lord I'm one... "
My Hooters favs are 'Karla with a K', 'Satellite' (the ignition song, got me going) and 'Boys will be boys'...
Karla with a K is to me the role model of a perfect Irish folk music song, though they' re Canadians...

we shouldn't hold that against them, well maybe we should, afterall, theyre basically French, and no one likes the French...LMAO

BTW, I went to France once, hated just about everything about the place, love Holland and Belgium though,

There is actually quite a bit of Irish culture in certain parts of Canada, notably Nova Scotia and that area. I'm not all that surprised about a Canadian group sounding Irish. If I recall correctly, the 1960s group The Irish Rovers were Canadian as well.Listening to them sing, you would never know it.

I have been to France a number of times - really like the place, especially the south - Montpellier, Nice etc. Holland too. Cannot stand Belgium - weird place.
