What Are You Listening To?
[Image: 220px-Dark_Side_of_the_Moon.png]

PINK FLOYD  "the dark side of the moon"  vinyl/30th anniversary vinyl/cd  1973:

the band's eighth...
900+ weeks on the US charts...
their signature album and one of the most recognisable album covers ever...
I can take or leave this album...
half the album I don't care for at all...
thought they made better albums (The Wall, Final Cut, Division Bell)...
I guess its like Sgt Pepper in that 'you had to be there' at the time to really grasp it...

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

WORST TRACK: ON THE RUN

BEST TRACK:  BRAIN DAMAGE

tracks:

1....speak to me/breathe ***
2....on the run *
3....time **
4....the great gig in the sky *
5....money *
6....us and them ***
7....any colour you like *
8....brain damage ***
9....eclipse **

3s = 3

Yup – it’s the Dutch prog band’s seventeenth album and was released in January this year. Totally missed it – shocking!

I haven’t heard a whole lot of their stuff, but am well acquainted with Ton Scherpenzeel (great keys and piano player) due to his contributions to some of Camel’s albums. Andy Latimer plays guitar on the only instrumental track on this album and Scherpenzeel says “We have a great musical and personal click. Andy personifies the word “feeling” for me, and that is what ‘Ripples on the Water’ is all about.”

Lots of symphonic and melodic rock bombast, interspersed with enough quieter passages to save it from becoming unbearable - such a fine line. I’ll need to have another listen – this one was somewhat interrupted, but there were a few tracks that stood out, not least "Ripples on the Water" – think I’d buy the album just for that!

“Falling” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9UIBvdwWO0

“To an End” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo4S2G1UUMw

… and the pièce de résistance … feeling is exactly right - wonderful player ...

I will be buying this regardless of the rest of the tracks. Lovely stuff. Very Camelish!

^Goodie!

I quite like their Close to the Fire album - AL plays a bit of lead on "Full Circle", which is an unexpectedly very gung ho Celtic number - nothing like the above.

Lol – I’m listening to Camel too. Love that they used the metre of the camel's walk on Rajaz.

In the order in which I pulled them out - Rain Dances and Breathless. The Rain Dances album package is a delight … to me, anyway ... and t’s quite extraordinary that Andy Latimer is able to coax the same huge feeling from the flute as he is from his guitar!

There are some strange sounding instruments on this album – Liquid Boo Bams which are a real thing I find!! Then there are teeth, a Turkish ring and car horns, lol! The rather brief title track, on which Andy, Richard and Mel also play umbrellas -

SLADE "the amazing kamikaze syndrome"  vinyl/cd 1983:

UK Glam rockers' eleventh studio set...
Glam had died a quick death after three or four years but these guys kept going...
a genuine rock band...
they were the biggest singles band in the UK in the 1970s and were still doing it in the early
1980s with two singles off the album that narrowly missed out on the #1 spot on the charts and
both peaking at #2, the ballad "my oh my" and the almost danceable rocker "run runaway"...
the band never made it big in the US but this was their biggest album and contained their biggest hit
 over there with "run runaway"...
almost hard rock in places on this one, some glam,either way, its pure rock and roll!
and after Steve Marriott, Noddy Holder is my favourite rock vocalist....
three tracks on here I love, the two hits and the opening track,hard to decide which one I would call my
favourite track but I had to go for one of the singles because I love the fun video for it and I want to watch
it!

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: ready to explore
best track: run runaway

tracks:

1....slam the hammer down ***
2....in the doghouse **
3....run runaway ***
4....high and dry **
5....my oh my ***
6....cocky rock boys **
7....ready to explore *
8....C'est La Vie *
9....cheap and nasty love **
10..razzle dazzle man **

3s = 3
2s = 5
1s = 2
