FUGEES "greatest hits"  cd, 2003:

shortlived American soul/reggae/hip-hop band...
they only released two albums plus this compilation...
I thought I liked these guys (well, gal and two guys)…
I guess I was wrong...
dislike all but two on here and the two I do like are covers,
Marley's "no woman no cry" and Roberta's "killing me softly"...
anyway, they made enough money off that Roberta Flack cover to live
comfortably for the rest of their lives, so no need to shed a tear for their short career...
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite track:

CURTIS MAYFIELD "the very best of..." cd,  1997:

one of the forgotten, underrated stars of soul/R+B/Funk...
former lead vocalist for Impressions...
discovered this dude back in the early 1980s when The Jam covered his
"move on up" track....
his songs are full of social commentary/political statements, much the same as
Stevie's "innervisions" and Marvin's "whats goin' on?" but Curtis did it first....
three standout tracks on here for me, "move on up", "superfly" and the one ive
chosen...I LOVE THIS ALBUM

as a footnote. and by pure coincidence a four cd boxset containing Curtis' first four solo albums
are being released today as part of the 50th Anniversary of the commencement of his solo recording career!

RIHANNA "loud"  cd,  2010

y'all probably surprised I own a Rihanna album, then again, you might not LOL...
her fifth of eight, only one I own...
would have originally got it for "I love the way you lie pt II", the follow up to the
hugely successful hit duet with Eminem...
as it happens this is a superb album of pop/dance/r+b…
featured artists include Eminem, Drake, Britney and dare I say it, Minaj...
love most of this album, this is what the genre should be IMO...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

KENDRICK LAMAR "to pimp a butterfly" cd, 2015:

rapper...
third album of four, only one I own...
topped just about all the annual best of lists for that year....
nominated for a handful of Grammy's, won a couple from memory...
signed to Dre's Aftermath label....
jazz, blues and funk influences all over this one...
some foul language also, none of which is necessary, but some actually
fits within the songs, mostly, just foul language for the sake of it IMO...
songs deal with life in 'the hood', so sort of a modern take of "innervisions"
and 'whats going on", the album is nowhere in the same league as those two but
I guess it means the same for this generation as those did for theirs...
some good stuff on here, some utter crap also but overall...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM (I guess)…

favourite track features Boris Gardner's vocals as a 'sample' and Funkadelic/Parliament's
vocalist George Clinton on lead vocals

50 CENT  "get rich or die tryin' " cd, 2003:

his debut album after several mixtape releases...
majority of songs deal with his previous life as a drug dealer/pimp,
others deal with his attempted murder when Mike Tyson's bodyguard
shot him nine times in a drive-by in 2001...
so, like Eminem's music, this is autobiographical for the most part...
a good solid album,
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

ALICIA KEYS "the diary of Alicia keys" cd, 2003:

Alicia's second of six, and my second and last...
her debut was mainly soul, gospel and ballads...
this one heads more into the modern era with modern R+B,
soul and the occasional leaning towards hip-hop...
she lost me after this one as she delved further into hip-hop...
still, a very good album by an artist who lost her way...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

my favourite track and second single:
