CAT POWER "you are free" cd, 2003:
one of those garage sale 60cds for $30 I picked up a couple of weeks ago...
female solo artist...
from Atlanta, Georgia...
sixth album...
basic accompaniment is an electric guitar...
hearing similarities to Courtney Barnett and PJ Harvey...
hearing a almost unplugged grunge style on some tracks...
nothing really bad on here but nothing great neither...
just a pleasant album
I LIKE THIS ALBUM:
favourite:
"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..." - Me 2014.

I definitely will have to listen to Bic Runga after the excellent review you gave to the album Crazy mate ! The other albums look interesting also. I am really not interested in today's Top 40 unless it is categorized by gender ! Years ago there weren't many genres so one Top 40 would suffice. Now there are so many genres or types of music (as you like to call it) that a lot of good music is being ignored, unheard or left out !
How can you compare an album by Kanye West to an album by Father John Misty on the same chart on a year's end list from the various music sites...Spin, Kerrang, Rolling Stone, Billboard,etc...... ! It's foolish and stupid !
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!

BIRDS OF TOKYO "universes" cd, 2008
Aussie alt-rockers from here in Perth...
my daughter used to hang out with these guys back in the day before she
moved to Melbourne....
second album of five, I own this and the self titled follow up...
good solid alt rock on here
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

TIN MACHINE "tin machine" ,cd 1989
eighteenth studio set for Mr Bowie...
this time as part of a band...
desperate to shed the image of 'pop star' after his commercially successful
1980s from Lets Dance thru Never Let Me Down Bowie released this album that
was another re-invention in style...
it was heavy for the most part, what we'd probably consider alt-rock nowadays with
some hints of grunge...once again, the man was ahead of his time but no one understood it...
this was not the Bowie the new fans who grew up on "modern love", "china girl" and "lets dance"
wanted to hear and thus their confusion ended with a dud album that at the time became the worst
seller of his career, this feat was only outdone with Tin Machine-2 which sold even less...
a cover of Lennon's "working class hero" on here and its pretty bad...as is most of the album...
fourteen tracks on here, only three maybe four that I like...
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

GREEN DAY "warning:" cd, 2000
the band's sixth...
follows their usual style, not punk in sound but the attitude comes though...
top 10 everywhere that matters...
three big singles off it but my favourite track is not one of those..
and glad to say I LOVE THIS ALBUM

DMA's "hills end" cd, 2016:
Aussie alt rockers...
debut album of two...
was put on to these guys a few months ago by my mate Paul
who runs the cd department at the local store...
he told me they sound like Oasis and were discovered by Liam Gallagher
during a Beady Eye tour a few years ago which sparked my interest...
yeah, I can hear Oasis' sound on most of the tracks but its not overtly obvious...
a pleasant album, not a patch on the majority of Oasis albums but okay...
only one stand out track for me which I have just learnt was their debut single...
album reached #8 on the Aussie album charts and #36 on the UK charts...
if anyone is going to like my linked track it will be MH and maybe SteveO, but feel free
to listen if youre curious...

BLUR "blur" cd, 1997:
Brit-pop band's fifth studio set of eight...
I have a love/hate relationship with these guys,
I love their singles but generally, their albums are underwhelming
and don't live up to the hype of the singles...
first half of this album is superb, its full of their usual sounds whilst the
second half is more experimental, not as much out there as Albarn's material
with Gorillaz but more along the lines of his solo material...
not too keen on the second half but its okay for the most part...
album was their biggest seller outside of their homeland but a pretty average
seller by their standards in the UK...
album contains their biggest international hit with Song-2 but that's not my favourite
on here...

GARBAGE "version 2.0" cd, 1998:
second album of six, only one I own...
US Alt rock band with a Scottish female on vocals...
thinking of No Doubt as a 'sounds like'...
a couple of tracks have a heavier almost grunge sound also...
just an average album, nothing I dislike, nothing I love...

HOLE "celebrity skin" cd, 1998:
third album from Courtney Love's Hole...
went platinum in the US, Canada and Australia but she's still better
known as the widow of Kurt Cobain to most people which is a shame because
this is one hell of a good solid Alt Rock album IMO with a fine mix of grunge, rock, alt-rock
on here, also a cool acoustic track towards the end...
I love just about every track on here so its hard to pick a favourite
a also own a six track 'ep' called "ask for it"...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
the title track:
"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight

GORILLAZ "demon days" cd, 2005:
second album of six released...
I own the first three...
a brilliant original concept of an animated band conceived by Damon Albarn of Blur...
thus gives the members distance between the members and the image...
a mix of all genres here from jazz through pop, funk and rap, add samples/dubs
and catchy tunes and you have an interestingly original style...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
favourite, and lead off single:
"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..." - Me 2014.
