What Are You Listening To?

PAUL WELLER "heavy soul" vinyl/cd 1997:

another delve through the oldies...
Weller's fourth solo set...
heavier than his previous three efforts...
some soft rock here also...
was never really a big fan of this album but its been playing
on continual rotation in my car over the last few days...
its a really underrated album full of little gems...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

GREEN DAY "nimrod" cd 1997:

their fifth of twelve studio albums....
contains their most famous song, Good Riddance...
their typical puck rock sounds on here, a few hints of reggae
tinged tunes and of course the above mentioned one with strings...
another good solid album from the band...
and as we all know, and probably love Good Riddance, here's another one
for your listening pleasure:

DMA's  "for now" cd, 2018

Aussie alt rock band...
I have no idea what DMA stands for???....
second album...
recommended for my by mate Paul at the local cd store...
first album, previously posted, has a distinct Oasis sound, this one,
has a general Britpop sound...
debut album was good, this one is brilliant...
nominated for several ARIA music awards, but alas, failed to get gonged...
album peaked at #7 in their homeland, #5 in Scotland and #13 in the UK...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

CRASH TEST DUMMIES "the ghosts that haunt me" cd,  1991

their debut album...
Alt folk for the most part, a few tracks almost cross over into country also...
4x platinum in their homeland of Canada, didn't chart anywhere else (stupid world!)…
I had no idea until I was looking on Wiki for the album cover that my favourite track
was a cover version originally recorded by Replacements...
anyway, regardless of that this is my favourite album of theirs...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

ALEX LLOYD "black the sun" cd, 1999:

Aussie alt-dude...
debut album of six, I own the first three, he sort of lost his way
after those ones as he tried to get too commercial, poppy and radio friendly...
love this album immensely, sounds like nothing else I have as its a fusion of a lot
of musical influences...
he should have been more popular than he was if only for his first two album...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

one of the singles:

GORILLAZ "gorillaz" cd, 2001

debut album...
could have put this in hip hop/rap, electronica but I thought Alternative
covers it all...
good solid album IMO...
loving just about everything on it....

CHILDISH GAMBINO "awaken, my love!" cd, 2016

his third of three...
only one I own...
very good artist, eclectic, covers most styles and genres...
the experts call his rap/r+b but he is way more than that, thus the Alternative thread for me...
has that almost 'Godlike genius' like Prince...
only problem I have is that he comes across a bit precious/pretentious at times, again, like Prince,
because he knows he is very good at what he does, and that puts me off him at times
and why I can only handle him in small doses, and for that reason I do not love this album
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

this track takes a couple of minutes to kick off but once it does it has a Lenny Kravitz feel to it...

ANGUS STONE "broken brights" cd, 2012:

the male half of Angus & Julia Stone (Duh!)…
debut solo set...
alt-folk for the most part...
songs sound like the sound Dylan had during his "knockin on heavens door" period...
album just keeps on getting better with age IMO
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

PAJAMA CLUB "pajama club"  cd, 2011:

a Neil Finn side project to do things he probably couldn't get away with under his own name,
like McCartney with the Fireman albums...
to be honest I would be interested in hearing a collaboration between Macca and Finn, of dare I say it,
Jack White and either of the them....
has taken me since its release date to actually get to like it...
came in at a borderline 1.6 back then, would probably give it a 1.8 or 1.9 now,
still nothing to love on it but its a lot better than the crap that we see in the charts currently...

Brilliant but like too many albums in this style the inclustion of the stock standard rock and roll drumkit just makes no sense.
