Listening ridiculous number of times to same recording.
#1
Hi,

I remember seeing a documentary about the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca getting a hold of a phonograph in the 1930s and a record of some Bach, and listening to it ad nauseam, like, over and over again, practically incessantly. You can imagine, at the timem he probably didn't have many recordings to choose from either, so in many ways he was forced into that mode of listening.

Nowadays however, with so much music and recordings, it's much harder to do this, mainly because something will come among and distract us. Nevertheless I think it might still occur, especially when we think we've found something that is so good, we're able to shut out all distractions. And of course that we have the time to do it.

So, maybe it's been asked before but ... I was interested in hearing of occasions when forum members have listened to something a ridiculous numbers of times over and over.

I don't do that intentionally. But sometimes it feels like that when I am in a situation where I am forced to listen to the current commercial pop music played at the gym. They are different songs, but they all sound like the same song. I think Lorca would have felt right at home.

When I enjoy a song, I can listen to it over and over again. That's not always a great choice since I run the risk of getting burned out of those songs. There are songs I will hear so many times like on the radio or playing in different places I go to and I can grow tired of them and annoyed when I hear them.

I try to use some moderation when I listen to music I enjoy and have variety to keep those songs fresh. The best songs for me are the ones I never grow tired of hearing. It's likely a personality thing.

When I really like a song I can listen it maximum 3-4 times in a row. But next couple days I will skip it. And maybe it is a reason why I don`t listen radio now. Cuz they are spinnin same tracks and it is annoying me.

I have a problem when I acquire an album with fantastic music that I have newly discovered. I will listen to it several times during the first week. Then I feel I need to put it away for a while so as not to get tired of it and have it lose its impact.

The problem is, whatever else I choose to listen to, I find myself unsatisfied. I cannot help comparing it to my new favourite. I find myself thinking "this is good, but not as good as XXXXX", even when the thing I am listening to gave me the same reaction as XXXXX did when I first got it.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here - Don't know exactly how many times I have listened to it but it would certainly be more than 500 times in my lifetime. Never tire of it. Just one of those magical albums that has all the right ingredients. Like a favourite meal - you always return to it.
