It was the apprehension that I purchased this. I remember hearing a couple of songs off of the previous I Am A Bird Now that shall we say caught my ear. So I was not totally shocked by the vocal style. A warbling Tiny Tim. Then I saw Lou Reed developed an interest and recorded a track with him. That's what persuaded me to give it a shot. I don't want to be too judgemental, but THIS GUYS A FREAK. You probably already knew that. We need a new genre called Antony & the Johnsons. Most of the music is in the classical vain, and it's very pretty music. It's just too soft on the album. The clips here bring it out a lot more than the recordings. Although the vocals are certainly different, I was prepared for that. The album just needed more oomph. The live clip on Letterman of track #8 is much better than the recording. It is on high rotation on my mp3 this week, so some of it may stick with me.

Glad I gave this a shot. I had written it off based on the single of Fireflies which I hear every morning on the tv music channels and I hate. Actually a few real good tracks on here along with some rubbish of course, but overall, not bad. The single made it to #1 on the U.S. charts with the album at #8. Another one that's hard to classify and maybe should even be electronic as he claims that to be the big influence. He, is Adam Young. A Minnesota lad who has created Owl City, and gained attention by uploading his songs to myspace, thus receiving a recording contract. See folks, that's all it takes. Problem for me is I just don't like music generated by a computer, which is most of this. It's not that the music is bad, just the way it's created I don't like. Live tracks of #'s 3 and 8 are an example. No instruments to play. Just turn/slide some knobs. At some point, that will be all music is. Glad I won't be here.

Why does it matter how the music is created as long as you like it? Also, why do you think all music will eventually be made the same way?

We had to wait five years for Hungry Saw but only two for this new one. They're currently touring Europe. I hope they come stateside soon.

For those not in the know this British band formed in 1992. Allmusic.com describes them well as "Essentially, the group filter[s] the dark romanticism of Leonard Cohen, Ian Curtis, and Scott Walker as filtered through the bizarre pop songcraft of Lee Hazlewood and the aesthetics of indie rock."

Paddy McAloon - I Trawl The Megahertz




I'm a sucker for unusual albums like this.

This is largely instrumental, pretty much entirely orchestral, but musically is perhaps closest to Jazz. The reason I've posted it here is that Paddy is the leader & songwriter of the UK band Prefab Sprout, and the album feels "Alternative".

About 10 years ago McAloon began to lose his sight (It's almost totally gone now), due to a congenital condition which has caused problems with detached retinas. Unable to read, he resorted to listening to radio broadcasts, and found that he was piecing together snatches of conversation from his listening into an idea for an album.

The title track is about 20 mins long, and is a spoken-word job, with a woman reminiscing and trying to make sense of her life.

Definitely not for dancing to...

California rockers started in 1996 as a christian alternative band. While not shunning their faith they have tried to shed the label as only a christian band. While their early work was played mostly on christian sation this album may do the trick, getting airplay in all markets, and charting high on multiple charts, with singles thus far of Always and Mess Of Me. Although you can interpret lyrics how you wish, any christian references here are not in your face.
