What Are You Listening To?
John Lennon - John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band

Some of Lennon's most personal songs. The cathartic nature of the lyrics have a reputation for being a painful listen, but I think that's overstating things a little.

Probably my favourite Beatles solo effort.

An excellent album showing John at his most vulnerable and maybe at his most honest ..............Excellent control by John of Phil Spector's production techniques ..............wonderful almost minimal sound ............Cool
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

At the moment I'm listening to The Monkees First Album...................Still sounds excellent to me . It brings back memories of those wonderful TV shows ...carefree innocent days when I was young and the biggest concern I had was what's for tea and what I was going to spend my pocket money onCool

A great album with well crafted songs, arrangements and good instrumentation which chronicles the relationships, affairs and complex friendships that tore apart and cemented together that incarnation of Fleetwood MacCool

Many moons ago.....music used to come on big black brittle things that whirled round at frighting speeds (78 RPM) and only contained two tracks..............Against this background the recording people of the day had a special product up their sleeves......................The novelty item.................These ranged from the funny to the downright bizarre.................. These items were hidden gems and it was this influence that combined with eight people became the melting pot that was The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.....................In the mid 60s Britain was about to go through the labour pains of giving birth to the Monty Python style of humour, which would become the yardstick by which comedy would be measured for decades to come.

In 1966 Vivian Stanshall,( Master of ceremonies on Tubular Bells ) Neil Innes ( Monty Python and Rutland Weekend Television) and six other musicians were recording and performing musical items based on these novelty items from the days of 78s. The art of the day was budding Sgt Pepper and psychedelia and of course pre Monty Python humour. EMI signed this octet and channeled them into producing their first recordings and at last an album( all be it with another label).........and that album was "Gorilla" Gorilla is more than a musical listen...........it is a full blooded piece of entrainment.....................find it .............listen to it and see what I meanCool

Think it was John Lennon that said something like "If they were to rename rock 'n' roll, they would just call it Chuck Berry". Can't argue with that. The guy defines the term. This compilation starts with 1959 and Chuck was rockin' way before then. This is volume 2 in this cd Chess reissue and I do not have volume 1 only because I have those tracks on vinyl. I will probably end up getting volume 1 at some point. Why? Because it's Chuck Berry. Once again, hard to pick a best and worst. Why? Because it's Chuck Berry. The legen is 83 years old and I'm not sure if he's still performing today, but I know as recently as a couple of years ago he was still performing and doing that duck walk.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Come On

Best Track - You Never Can Tell

It was a teenage wedding,
and the old folks wished them well
You could see that Pierre
did truly love the mademoiselle
And now the young monsieur
and madame have rung the chapel bell,
"C'est la vie", say the old folks,
it goes to show you never can tell

They furnished off an apartment
with a two room Roebuck sale
The coolerator was crammed
with TV dinners and ginger ale,
But when Pierre found work,
the little money comin' worked out well
"C'est la vie", say the old folks,
it goes to show you never can tell

They had a hi-fi phono, boy, did they let it blast
Seven hundred little records,
all rock, rhythm and jazz
But when the sun went down,
the rapid tempo of the music fell
"C'est la vie", say the old folks,
it goes to show you never can tell

They bought a souped-up jitney,
'twas a cherry red '53,
They drove it down New Orleans
to celebrate their anniversary
It was there that Pierre was married
to the lovely mademoiselle
"C'est la vie", say the old folks,
it goes to show you never can tell

Thanks for passing this along.

The black and white clips from the 50s have some real groove to them, and give me a better appreciation of him as a performer and guitar player--not just an influence.

As for the early 70s stuff, not so much, but it looks like he was having fun.
