Mathew Jonson - Love in the Future from Agents of Time [Wagon Repair Ltd., 2010]

Co-founder of the label Wagon Repair, member of Cobblestone Jazz, and one of my favorite musicians from the past ten years. I believe this is his first full-length under his given name. I am quite excited to hear it!

After only 3 albums, this is said by James Murphy to be the last album for the group. After the last one generating the buzz that it did in the U.K. this one is expected to do the same. The group has been much bigger over there than here. The single of Drunk Girls is already getting heavy airplay on the airwaves and in the clubs. Would hate to have been on the cleanup crew after that video shoot. That is really the only track here that I liked although a few other could grab me with some more play. Pow Pow is rather catchy. Unless it shows up at a heavy discount that additional play probably won't happen.

Mains de Givre - Un Chœur Dâmes En Détresse from Esther Marie [Textura, 2010]

Built from early jam sessions, and assembled into four striking pieces, each with its individual tone, Esther Marie progresses especially slowly, as guitar and violin layers, processed into exquisite textures, become entangled and appear weighed down by their own gravity. There is a natural flow running through the whole album, especially as there is no clear demarcation between the first two tracks, as the vast clouds of distortions generated by Quach freely stretch from Un Chœur D’Ames En Detresse into Le Cercle Des Mœurs, and while the last two tracks are more distinct, they are carved from similarly dense soundscapes, as to permanently enforce the quietly abrasive and sombre nature of the record.

Unexpected prezzie from Mrs Tiggi...

In many respects this is no different to their previous work, but crucially they've managed to introduce plenty of interesting flourishes which keep the music compelling.

Enjoyed this muchly, except the lukewarm Reggae cover...

2 CD career retrospective from "collective" with a very fluid line-up.

Good album that sounds at times like a dancier Dead Can Dance.

Perhaps that ought to be Dead Can Dancier...

Assorted artists perform European Folk songs with differing Dance accompaniments. Each of the songs concerns exile in one form or another.

Thoroughly enjoyed this.
