right im 16 and i listen to many different genres of music. i enjoy going into the roots of bands. for example i started listening to the stones who led me to buddy holly then chuck berry then bo didley then muddy waters. And then before you know it i was listening to Robert Johnson recordings from 1936. none of my friend like the music i like they generally like lil wayne or some other rapper who thinks groping women in a video makes them cool. and i got to thinking what where people older than me tastes in music when they were 16 (my age) so i was hoping the older members on this forum could discuss this and give me a very interesting insight

OK I know this is going to be unpopular but for me rap, hip hop, trance and drums n bass (there's a contradiction in terms as very few actually have real drums anyway) are all lacking in any real depth. Musically there are just plain boring and they have no dynamics in their material. The more technology (and I am a great fan of technology) is introduced into the studio the more mundane the music becomes. Don't get me wrong - technology has it's place, but it is being overused/abused to the point where we might as well be listening to the washing machine. No-one is developing their own unique sound anymore - everyone seems to be dialling in the same presets in the same software packages and coming up with the same result. Even in 'standard' rock music the guitars are all starting to sound alike - because the guitarists are using the same templates for their 'sound'. I hear very little creative work from an audio engineering point of view. Maybe people are just not prepared to put in the effort anymore??!??

to a great extent i believe that you are correct as i know plenty of 18-23yo's, however they are not into rap, apart from Eminem, they tend to listen to Heavy Metal...but luckily, like you, there are a couple i know who appreciate the legends of rock music...these guys play McCartney and Johnny Cash in their cars as often as the newer stuff...
its like ive always said...to appreciate music fully you need to go back to the originators of where it all began

i couldint agree with you more. and i agree with all other comments above aswell. even when i do listen to rap its generally public enemy and run-dmc. but mabey i feel the way i do because im from a town not a city. and "there's only one good use for a small town, you know you wanna get out"~lou reed. there is generally not much variety of people when you're in a small town and no one wants to be different in a small town not even in the way they think so you end up with majority of people likeing the same thing.
