What Are You Listening To?

Synth pop in its infancy. Fourth album and the follow up to Dare, which took them to the top with the single Don't You Want Me. Nothing as catchy here. The album fell flat. They would take a moderate rebound later, but this album may be the low point. It made a modest #62 in the states with the single of The Lebanon about the same. U.K. treated them a lot better taking the album to #3. That worst track is just terrible.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Rock Me Again.......

Best Track - Louise

When he saw her getting of the bus
It seemed to wipe away the years
Her face was older, just a little rough
But her eyes were still so clear
He drank his coffee and he hurried out
Across before she walked away
Then he approached her like a little child
Too scared for what he had to say

"hello, louise,
Remember me?
Now should we part
Or stay awhile?
As if we were still lovers"

She took a moment just to recognise the man she'd known so well before
And as he started to apologise
Lose any bitterness she bore
She gently put her finger on his lips
To let him know she understood
And with her suitcase standing on the floor
Embraced him like a lover would

He told louise
"you look so good
It's just you see
You make me feel
As if we were still lovers"

It's not always true that time heals all wounds
There are wounds that you don't wanna heal
The memories of something really good
Something truly real, that you never found again

And though they talked for just a little time
Before she said she had to go
He saw the meeting as a tiny sign
That told him all he had to know

And so louise
Waved from the bus
And as she left
She gave that smile
As if they were still lovers

Strange, I thought I liked this more than I just did. What happened? This is what Weller broke up the Jam for? This is their sixth album. Still sold rather well in the U.K. hitting #2 with the hit It Didn't Matter at #3. The U.S. was not as generous where this album flattened out at #122. That single was the best thing on the album for me. The white soul/funk stuff just didn't work for Paul. I think there are too many styles being injected into the album overall. Their label (Polydor) would drop them after this album, and a look into what was submitted as the next one. They called it quits after that was released on a new label.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Heavens Above

Best Track - It Didn't Matter

I remember all the early days
Trying to think of the right things to say
I didn't want you to think i was like the rest
Who think they own you just because you've laid with them
It didn't matter - really didn't matter
It didn't matter now we are together

There are crystal hearts just waiting to be smashed
And out to break them are the ones who never last
To soon today and gone tomorrow
And taking with them just another little piece of you

There are those who think its smart
Thinking that they've stole your love and broke your heart
Too much too soon and gone tomorrow
Well my love doesn't need to lend or steal or borrow

thats a pretty fair appraisal of 'cost of loving' album. their follow up album 'confessions of a pop group' was the style councils best album even though it only reached #15 in uk charts. this album was released on polydor in uk, was it released on a different label in US?. it was their 1989 'modernism' that was rejected by polydor. the band split then, paul weller didnt re emerge till 1991 with his self titled, self financed debut solo set, this was only released in japan on pony canyon records, but import sales to uk got him to release it there also, his career has gone from strength to strength since then with great albums like 'wild wood' 'stanley road' 'illumination' '22dreams'

I may have confused the label parting, sorry.

1993's wild wood album is very rootsy, folky, pastoral sounding
1995's stanley road album is more of a traditional rock album, steve winwood played keyboards on a couple of tracks on this one

theyre good places to start with his solo career

2008's 22 dreams album has bits of folk, classical, pop, rock, psychadelica, soul, its a very good double set but a bit too long if youre not familliar with what he does on record

One of my favourite songs from one of the most underrated bands in history. Jeffrey Lee Pierce was one of a kind and his work is harshly underappreciated.
