What Are You Listening To?
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:come on music head, this albums worth more than 1.9 surely? its a classic. and really? only three singles off it in the states? im sure 'cold as xmas' was a single in the uk.
there were 6 hits off this in australia:

im still standing #1
i guess thats why the call it the blues #1
kiss the bride #7
crystal #26
too low for zero #18
cold as xmas #37

plus the album reached #1 on the album charts

sorry bud, best I can do.
If there were more singles than that here, they didn't chart.
I couldn't stand that I'm Still Standing when it was out.
I didn't even remember Kiss The Bride as a single.
Elton started losing me around Rock Of The Westies.
From then on for me, it was 2 maybe 3 good songs on an album, and the rest rubbish.
Loved pretty much everything he did prior to that.

i agree that the quality of a lot of his albums after the late 1970s was lacking, just checked my collection to see what i have of Elton after that period:

1983 too low for zero
1984 breaking hearts
1992 sleeping with the past
2001 songs from the west coast

thats it, i like all those albums. 'sacrifice'/'healing hands' double 'a' side single from 1992 was Eltons first Uk No.1 single, credited to him , that is, of course he had 'dont go breaking my heart' with Kiki Dee in the 1970s but that was credited as a duet, not a solo single.
on comparrision of the UK,US and Australian charts over his career, Elton John has been more popular in Australia than either the UK or USA both on the singles and album charts

I'm not trolling your posts, Lloyd, we have our house guest still with us, and he's a huge Floyd/Waters fan, so this was pure hospitality :biggrin1::biggrin1:.

This album charts the course of 40 minutes of dreaming and semi-consciousness for the protagonist. Sexual psycho-drama ensues, accompanied by very Floydy music featuring Clapton throughout on guitar.

Another of those pesky "concept" albums. This one based around an LA radio station and the phone-ins of a young Welshman (never have quite figured out where the Welsh bit fits in).

Deals with communication and the global village, and definitely has a late '80s "sound". RW doesn't play much from this album in his live shows, so it may be that he doesn't regard it very highly himself. I think it's brilliant !!

And then of course there's 'Music from the Body' - absolute rubbish. Bt the way, has anyone else deciphered the Morse Code on the cover of KAOS?

Elton's Best post 70's was 'Empty Garden' - written after Lennon's death.

the morse code message reads: this album is crap, i am crap, and even crapper than that is the people who buy it lol

Empty Garden was a great song, it wasnt a big hit from memory, was it?

No offense taken. I am the biggest Floyd fan on the planet but I don't like a single thing they did prior to the 'Meddle/Obscured by Clouds' period. I also think the Division Bell is brilliant. By the way just for info the morse code represents the names of the tracks. But the 'concept' was very higgeldy piggeldy as it was on Pros & Cons. Wright's last solo effort is amazing stuff. Very creative.

I'll tell you where you can find one of Gilmour's best solo's. Listen to Supertramp's 'Brother Where You Bound' album. Some searing guitar work on the title track.

im not a big fan of the Floyd as i said, but i think together gilmour/waters compliment eachother beautifully, apart, they are lost without the other
