I guess I'm more of a fan of his mellower work.

thats strange isnt it, how we like Nick Cave, but you like the mellow side of him,but i like the heavier side?

Really? I'm not doubting their prowess as a powerhouse in the 80s and 90s alternative music scene, but this is a Greatest Hits album and contains their most popular work not necessarily their best. Most importantly, it does contain material mainly from Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication and By The Way, only one of these records stated I would place in my top 3. Missing a lot of material from Mother's Milk in particular and the better works from Blood Sugar Sex Magik, I am disappointed at how the songs have been selected. Unfortunately, most of the tracks for the Greatest Hits compilation are works that were mostly singles (from memory) and not their better works. We all know of the most popular non-single in popular music - Stairway to Heaven and I see a particular similarity here. RHCP were also able to play some of the better covers including Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground and Hendrix's Fire with a huge funk-punk influence.

'higher ground' is on the RHCP 'best of' set. generally you could say that most artists best songs are the 'non singles' or 'album tracks'.
singles are generally there to promote the respective album they are from and not neccessarily representative of the album or the particular artist concerned.
im not criticising your comments at all regarding the chilli peppers and what may or may not be their best songs as i have no idea about their albums, all i know is their singles and i like those. i know where you are coming from, i was the same with Eminem's 'curtain call' best of set, for the average listener it is great but to the fan his album tracks are the 'real slim shady'

This is the debut album of this English bands two album career. I have both of them and am still trying to figure out why. I posted the other one just a couple of weeks ago, so they are both fresh listens, and I couldn't find anything that would make me want to buy them now. Must have been in another zone back then. Twilight maybe. Not terrible and there were some decent tracks here, but nothing stands out, with as many bads as goods. Apparently the group has reformed as clip #5 here is from 2010. This album charted at #35 in the U.K. but failed to do so in the states.

The Aussie lads had not yet "made it" with this second album, and I can hear why. Definitely their worst album that I own, although it was well accepted in the homeland, and it led to a signing with Atco in the U.S. Fame would come elsewhere with a little more seasoning. The band is still a unit, even after losing frontman Michael Hutchence to an apparent suicide hanging in 1997. Back to this one, just nothing stood out as on the later albums. As many bad cuts as good for me. Surprised there are only 2 clips available.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Just To Learn Again

Best Track - Underneath The Colours

No division in the ranks
The lines are long and proud
No question on their lips
But there will always be doubt

Like a Chinese painting
All red with its message
A flag high in the sky
Twists and turns its language

Underneath the colours red blue white
Catch a glimpse of others
]From the corner of your eye

With the rise and fall
Of the conductor's blind hand
I play Russian Roulette
I am an angry young man

three singles wer released off this album here in Oz, stay young, night of rebellion & underneath the colours. they were not big hits, from memory 'stay young' scraped into the top 20, the other two, i cannot recall. their third album 'shabooh shabah' was their first real hit album in OZ, but it took till their sixth album 'the swing' to make inroads into europe and the USA,where they had a string of hits over the mid to late 1980s. im not a big fan of INXS, i didnt like the way Michael Hutchence strutted around on stage, he was too much of a cross between Jim Morrison/Mick Jagger for my liking, his performance at 'live-aid' turned INXS into bonafide stadium rockers though, cant knock him for that. INXS are touring australia early next year with their replacement frontman. they got him from their own reality tv show several years ago, he can sing but lacks the charisma of Hutchence.

STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS-OASIS

ive retitled this album 'standing on the shoulders of egos'

SOTSOG was oasis 4th album and was no better than the terrible 3rd album 'be here now'.
its pretty sad when the two best tracks on it are the instrumental(fuckin' in the bushes) and the Liam penned(little james).
im actually sitting here shaking my head because i cant say a single positive comment in regards to it. although not as long as the tracks on the previous release the majority still clock in at 5mins or over. the music is too repeatative, the lyrics have no substance or intelligence about them. one song title sums up where oasis were between 1998-2000 'where did it all go wrong?', i have a fair idea i know: too much booze and heavy drugs, and believing their own myth that they were the Beatles reincarnated. the album contains loops, indian instruments, backwards guitar parts, its just an overblown attempt to be Beatles, circa 'rubber soul'/'revolver', minus the class, which equates to 'ass'.three singles,'go let it out#1, 'who feels love?'#4, 'sunday morning call'#4 made the UK charts and the album got to #1, in the USA no singles charted and the album only made it to #24.
thankfully Noel Gallagher came to his senses after this album and went back to writing proper three minute pop songs with melody, their albums post 2000 were average to good affairs, but they couldnt match the greatness of the first two albums or the very good b-sides album 'the masterplan in 1999.

I DISLIKE THIS ALBUM WITH A PASSION!

Just pure genius. This album friggin' creeps me out. Not sure I've heard many artists who are this deep into what they were creating at the time. You can feel Nick feel this work. Seven tracks I love on this album. And a cover that would have been if original. That would be Dylans Death Is Not The End with verse trading by Nick, PJ Harvey, Shane McGowan and Kylie Minogue. PJ and Kylie each appear on another track also. Check out the Stagger Lee clip. Not sure when it's from but many years later and the band still feels it. That's rare. Video for Where The Wild Roses Grow is chilling. Very hard to pick a favorite here, but I was entranced from the beginning. I haven't heard all of Nick Caves work. This is the best I have heard. If you have heard an album of his that is better, please tell me. This album did not even touch the charts in the U.S. Not sure where I heard something to make me buy it, but thanks God, for that incident.
