Sixth album from the lads from la la land. I think by this time I had discovered they were a singles band. Some damn good singles in them early years. But they sure had trouble putting it together for a full album. If you want to explore Three Dog Night, stick to a compilation. They don't get much deeper than that. One great song on here of Black And White, one of those feel good, we are the world anthems. The album reached #6 here in the states, with that song leading the way with a #1 peak. You can't get any higher than 1.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
Worst Track - Prelude To Morning
Best Track - Black And White
The ink is black, the page is white
Together we learn to read and write
A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight
And now a child can understand
That this is the law of all the land, all the land
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
Together they grow to see the light, to see the light
And now at last we plainly see
We'll have a dance of Liberty, Liberty!
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
Together they grow to see the light, to see the light
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
Together they grow to see the light, to see the light
C'mon, get it, get it
Ohh-ohhhh, yeah, yeah
Keep it up now, around the world
Little boys and little girls
Yeah, yeah-eah, oh-ohhh

Third album from the boys, and probably ranks mid-range for me. Does kick off with my favorite song of all of theirs, Surrender. Think it's that one line about mom and dad sittin' on the couch rolling numbers listening to my Kiss records. That thought cracks me up. Probably best that doesn't describe my parents. I mighta turned out a music loving pothead. Anyway. Heaven Tonight is the only other track here I love. Sort of a dreamy like come down from Surrender. A couple of duds to average it out. Overall, power pop at it's best. Neither the album or any singles clicked in the U.S., the album going to #48 and Surrender at #62. The guitar intro on Heaven Tonight always reminds me of I Want You from Abbey Road.

Worst Track - Takin' Me Back
Best Track - Surrender
Mother told me, yes, she told me i'd meet girls like you.
She also told me, "stay away, you'll never know what you'll catch."
Just the other day i heard a soldier falling off some indonesian junk that's going round.
Mommy's alright, daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird.
Surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away, ay, ay, ay.
Father says, "your mother's right, she's really up on things."
"before we married, mommy served in the wacs in the philippines."
Now, i had heard the wacs recruited old maids for the war.
But mommy isn't one of those, i've known her all these years.
Mommy's alright, daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird.
Surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away, ay, ay, ay.
Whatever happened to all this season's losers of the year?
Ev'ry time i got to thinking, where'd they disappear?
When i woke up, mom and dad are rolling on the couch.
Rolling numbers, rock and rolling, got my kiss records out.
Mommy's alright, daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird.
Surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away, ay, ay, ay.
Away.
Away.
Repeat chorus 7x

"RUN DEVIL RUN" Paul McCartney
firstly, this is primarily a covers album(only 3 original tracks). it was recorded over a period of 3wks in 1999 and features Dave Gilmour on guitar.
it is far superior to the previous macca covers album 'choba b cccp-the russian album' which was released in the early 1990s. it was macca's first release after the passing of Linda, one year earlier.all the tracks were recorded live in the studio and only a couple of takes were done of each track to keep it feeling live and vital. the sound iis very compressed to get the feel of the 50s sound in the music,to keep it authentic and gritty.
i found it a loose, carefree album to listen to and that is reflective of the recording process. it feels like Macca was enjoying himself with these songs except on 'no other baby' and 'lonesome town' which sounds like he is still mourning linda.he hasnt tried to update the tracks or alter them, rather, pay homeage to the songs that inspired him during his youth.
i found it surprising that the three original tracks actually fit in well here, the title track is a raunchy chuck berry-esque rocker, 'try not to cry', a tribute to Linda, is very bluesy-rock, 'what it is' is a very catchy uptempo shuffle.
the album took a while to grow on me,especially the two Elvis songs 'all shook up' and 'i got stung',which being a big Presley fan is a no-no, No-one should be allowed to cover Elvis songs, except Fine Young Cannibals 'suspicious minds'.
the album did not sell very well at time of release, reaching #27 in the US and #12 in the UK,the only charting single in the UK, a double-A side 'no other baby/brown eyed handsome man' reached #42 in the charts.

Let's just call this In-A-Badda-Da-Album. The sixth and final album and rightfully so. After calling it quits in 1971, the band reformed in '74 with only one original member. This is the second and final installment of that failed effort. Drummer Ron Bushy was the original member. Vocalist Erik Braun stayed on for the reforming but seems to have lost it here. A few of the vocal chores are actually another member and they fail to say who. Doesn't matter. He was worse than Braun. The album never touched the U.S. charts.

And then I am going to listen to a vinyl release of Ramases - Glass Top Coffin. A nostalgia trip to my youth when we tried to find anything that was slightly 'wierd'. A passing phase. Or is it?
