I've had this question for a long time..
First of all, I listen to mostly underground. Maybe it's just my preference, but I find lots of incredible music which cannot even compete with music from the commercialized main stream. And still, even now, there are people, not celebrities, producing mindblowing songs. One day, one of my friends asked me that I should like main streams more, because simply they're popular. I said that's bullshyt but I kept wondering why these under musicians are not more popular? For example, on youtube, Nomak's Anger Of The Earth has 181,000 views while Bieber has million views? Is that mean most people find Bieber's songs more inspirational than Nomak's? I would've not questioned it if their popularity gap is close; however it's not. I think it is because of peer pressure whether it is concious or unconcious, and lack of opportuny to show their works to majority of people because of the main stream music corporation. I am not here to diss or degrade mainstream. I am just wondering, because it is a lot worse in my country... what do you guys think?

Success and talent have never really enjoyed a strong bond in popular music. There are many talented song writers and performers who really enjoy any commercial success. However, I believe that great music is made by those who have a love for music and the wise consumer has learned to look further than the main stream for exciting and fulfilling music

Gryphon sums it up very well. Unfortunately most punters don't explore anything which isn't handed to them on a plate.

totally agree,although some 'mainstream' is good,the majority is throwaway stuff....everytime i go into a cd shop what do i see?...other people looking at the top 40 albums,whats on display?...the latest Beiber,kesha album, whats playing?top 40.you only gotta look at the charts, theres maybe 1 or 2 good songs in the top 10 at any one time
thats why sites like this one are good,i pick up band names i havent heard much about,i check them out.
maybe its me,but, can you imagine beiber etc being played on 'golden oldie' radio in 25/30 yrs time??? i hope not

what is there to ponder over???
all the mainstream charts all over the world are full of BS songs and plastic artists without 'soul'. its been that way since about 1987-88 as far as im concerned, i think its because all the artists are either manufactured by record companies or look good wearing next to nothing.
just to pose a question: how many of the modern artists slogged it out for a few years in sweaty pubs and clubs or in rap battle tournaments and did the hard yards before realising their dream???
thats the difference between them and acts from the 50s-mid 80s

I totally agree too, I meant who am I to judge those main stream music but I just hate the fact that there are literally endless awesome music out there and they are being forgotten over those main stream music. And those main stream duds, they are professional business men behind the corporation rather than actual musicians. I found that some of them even don't have any philosophy or knowledge in their music, tasteless. And listeneres are so brainwashed by their works too! No matter how hard I try to make my people, who mostly listen to main stream pop music, to open up, to feel the same feeling out of the music that are not main stream, they are keep saying "can I please change it to lil wayne" It's like them songs are stuck in their heads which makes them immune to feel such distintive yet powerful feelings from other's work. I think we definately need changes in music society.

let them be, is what i say, you cant change people or their thoughts on any subject, i guess that if theyre getting pleasure from "lil wayne", as you mentioned,they are getting the same amount of pleasure as you are from your music.
none of us can change the world,mate...maybe over time they will learn to appreciate more styles of music...i mean we all liked the 'pop' hits of the day when we were youngsters,it got us to where we are today and we cant dismiss it

I'd absolutely agree with Crazy-Horse. You have to let it go.
I don't disagree with much that you've written, and have long ago ceased to worry about the situation. There are lots of people out there who appreciate quality in music (as this place proves, I hope), but they're fairly few and far between, it seems...
PS is that last sentence a contradiction in terms ?? I know what I meant. Really !!

I partly agree because I prefer music with an edge to it, or some kind of substance.
On the other hand though I do sometimes like a bit of mindless pop gloss, as long as it has enough energy to be interesting and is fronted by a pretty young woman (Rihanna, Sugababes, Lady Gaga etc). Just because I'd rather have a nutritious meal most of the time, doesn't mean I can't enjoy a bag of sugary sweets every once in a while.
Also, what exactly constitutes mainstream? Some highly classy acts (Queen, Pink Floyd, Coldplay, U2) are extremely popular and hence by definition mainstream. But no one would be embarrassed about listening to them*
*(actually it's pretty stupid to be embarrassed about liking something anyway - who else's business is it really?)
