Punk isn't really dead. You just don't know where to look man.
However, Hot Topic and Rhapsody is just speeding up the inevitable downfall.
I'm listening to some Subhumans right now.
Note: They are still alive.

Assuming you meant MTV, then isn't it kind of a paradox for MTV to define something as punk and to be taken seriously?

I've never really gotten that argument - what does it matter where the music comes from as long as you hear it? I heard the Sex Pistols on 'Top of The Pops' when I was a kid and it was a fairly defining moment for me.
And even if it is some watered-down commercially driven version, chances are it will end up being entry level for something with a touch more 'integrity'. My daughter liked 'Mmm Bop' when she was three but she's playing 'Battles' in her room now.
As far a punk goes how can it not always exist? - there are always people out there with a 'punk' attitude
Anyway -must get back to the ironing.....

Well, yeah. My entry into "good" music was from a fairly mainstream source... Nine Inch Nails, a band I don't like anymore. However, I don't feel they're in any way peers to the musicians they're inspired by... Even if I used to like them. I just don't feel that MTV punk holds a candle up to punk that I consider "good."
For the record, Battles is an amazing band... All of the musicians (well maybe not the bassist, I don't know his prior work) have been largely influential/great in their past bands... And still are.
