"CUT THE CRAP" THE CLASH

released in 1985 minus Topper Headon and Mick Jones, this to me was Joe Strummer's debut solo set.
the music is ladden with the usual reggae and funk beats and Clash power chords that we'd come to expect, and which Strummer and co. had mastered in the previous 7yrs.
for the most part the lyrics are either boring or sub-standard by the Clash's high standards. with that said though, i still enjoyed listening to Strummer's gravelly vocal performances through the 12 album tracks and the 1 bonus track that now is on the cd version of the album.
the choruses are full of the chants we expect of the Clash's music, but they lack the killer punches of aggression of their previous albums.
i think Strummer needed Mick Jones to bounce off whilst writing and with no Jones around, the substandard quality of the songs is reflected throughout the whole album, mick Jones was the melodist in the Clash, as McCartney was to Lennon in the Beatles.
i really think Joe Strummer should have cut his losses and the crap and not have released this album as it does nothing for the bands legacy, especially when the best song on the album is 'do it now'-the b-side to the single 'this is england.
the album reached #88 in the US and #16 in the UK, the single ' this is england' #24 in the UK

I'd say she's about as alternative as you can get. Her fourth album and the first after Johns death. Some heartfelt songs here I'm sure, with that on your shoulders, even though they don't come across very well. Says music and lyrics by Yoko. I might buy the lyrics, but not the music. Think producer Phil Spector may have had a hand in that. That's the only thing that makes anything work on this album is the music, as in the smooth sax on the leadoff track. Yoko? I swear, I think the woman must be tone deaf.I saw her most recent album made some waves on the dance charts. She was on one of the late nights, and it was absolutely terrible. There is no way this woman would still be making music if not for John. Sweet intro to track 3 from Sean, plus some nice pics in there. After my trashing of Yoko, I will confess I really liked a couple of her tracks on Double Fantasy, but then we know she got by with a little help from her closest friend. Surprising to me, this album make it to #49 on the U.S. charts.

Best Track - Goodbye Sadness

Goodbye, sadness, goodbye, goodbye,
I don't need you anymore.
I wet my pillow ev'ry night,
But now i saw the light.

Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I don't need you anymore.
Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I can't take it anymore.

Goodbye, sadness, goodbye, goodbye,
I don't need you anymore.
I lived in fear ev'ry day,
But now i'm going my way.

Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I don't need you anymore.
Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I can't take it anymore.

Hello, happiness, wherever you are,
I hope you hear my song.
Never want to cry again
Or hold my breath in fear again.

Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I don't need you anymore.
Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I can't take it anymore.

Borrowed from Robbie.

Mrs Robbie thought this was similar to Leonard Cohen. Howe gelb's vocals certainly fit with the Cohen/Reed/Cash school of speak-singing, but about halfway through the album, the band stretch their legs & start to rock out.

Fine album indeed.

I've only heard their first two, but rate them both very highly. Love the simplicity of their music.

I'm sure this has been reviewed here before, but the search facility objected to the shortness of the words, and I can't confirm whether it has or not...

A rare impulse purchase for me. Spotted it at a bargain price on Amazon, and mindful that it won the Mercury Music prize for best album of last year, I bought it unheard. Don't usually go much on music awards, but the Mercury has thrown up some fine winners over the years.

The Allmusic review cast them as Young Marble Giants soundalikes, and I felt that was a leap of imagination too far at first. However, by the album's end I could hear what they're talking about. It shares the hushed, spare, & fragile nature of YMG, but the drum machines used are 30 years more advanced.

Fresh and imaginative, this is the best thing I've heard for a while...

I remember JonG said he liked this.

Don't think anybody really reviewed it.

Was hoping the album would be better than the title. Not to be. I guess the title means something. They had yet to break big with this third album. Think that came with the follow up. This one isn't really that bad, just missing the like mark. The closing track is no contest for the best, but still not the greatest. The U.S. took it to #46, with the Don't Change single at #80. At least we get good live clips.

Worst Track - Spy Of Love

Best Track - Don't Change

I'm standing here on the ground
The sky above won't fall down
Even though we fall in all directions
Resolution of happiness
Things have been dark for too long

Don't change for you
Don't change a thing for me
Don't change for you
Don't change a thing for me

I found a love I had lost
It had been gone for too long
Even though we fall in all directions
Execution of bitterness
Message received loud and clear

Don't change for you
Don't change a thing for me
Don't change for you
Don't change a thing for me

I'm standing here on the ground
The sky above won't fall down
Even though we fall in all directions
Execution of bitterness
Message received loud and clear

Don't change for you
Don't change a thing for me
Don't change for you
Don't change a thing for me
Don't change

'the one thing' and 'dont change' were both top 15 hits in Oz, and you're correct Ed in saying that the next album was the one that took them places. 'the swing' the follow up to this one, from memory spawned a handful of top 10 hits in Oz...it started their breaking down the doors in europe also, but 'kick' really hit worldwide paydirt for INXS....thats when the drugs and women took priority over the music they were making and the slide downhill.
the songs on 'shabooh shoobah' sounded better live than on vinyl, as for the title...there was a meaning behind it but i cant remember what it was though, sorry??
also, i dont own a single INXS album, always thought they were a singles and live band, i have a lot of their singles on 7" and 12",some of their remixes were quite good
