What's your opinion on Bootlegs ?
Are you for or against and why?
Have you got any good ones and if so what ?

I don't like them.
I know there have been some good ones, but unless things have changed over the years, there is no guarantee of sound quality.

i have several paul weller/style council/jam bootlegs also several KISS live bootlegs.
the sound quality isnt top notch but to me its about being a 'completist', the best of the bootlegs i have is The Jam 'butterfly collector', a double vinyl live set from an american tour in 1981, the bonus of it for me is that ive now got the 'sound effects' album live,plus other tracks of course.
i dont have a problem with bootlegs finding their way onto the market, if the 'men in suits, wont give the fans what they want,theres always people out there who will.

I have around 50 or so, mostly Beatles, Macca , Lennon and a few others............Quality does vary............however one or two of the Beatles ones have only just been equaled by the remasters ( Which could be why they were issued) ..........They have been acquired as I am a Beatles completest and enabled me to hear the full output well before Anthology and to realize that there is still more to be issued.
The quality issue was a problem with the early vinyl issues but with the coming of CD ad the formats beyond it is mostly a thing of he past.
It clearly shows that the men in suits don't give us all they can and they certainly have put pressure on then to give better value or money and better access.
The only thing that does worry me is where does the money we pay for them end up ? Macca hates them and suggests that we fund the criminal world .....................having said hat if he had been quicker to let some of the material out then maybe there would have been less demand for the gray matter...

so is there anything out there of a jam session of the beatles and Elvis? or Beatles and Dylan? or doesnt it exist?
its funny how different artists themselves like/dislike bootlegs...Paul Weller is all for them and has admitted even in the past 4 or 5 years that he still seeks out Small Faces/Kinks/Who bootlegs....and even his own for that matter to see what of his material is out there.

There is s rather odd thing..................................EMI have a tape box( Its while since I looked at this so the details might not be exact!)....................it dates from the 70s it contains around eight titles and is a Beatles reunion.................It is(was) at least 8 track and professionally done.................There were tracks with all four on but they ordered it to be wiped....................however, it is thought that Macca as a signed artist to EMI was not entitled to veto this so...............it is said that an engineer wiped the master copy but put the safety copy into the vaults ....................However only Macca really knows if it is there..............it is not as yet bootlegged but it is documented.:confused:

My opinion of bootlegs has been coloured by the poor quality that I experienced some years ago, so I haven't tried any for ages.
I think that artists should have some degree of rights over quality control, and can see why they don't want certain material seeing the light of day. That being said, there seems to be no shortage of customers or suppliers of bootlegs, so there's obviously a bit of a market for them.
I like the Grateful Dead approach of encouraging fans to record live gigs, and then providing cheap, well produced live material for sale. Lots & lots of it.
The official release of Dylan's "Albert Hall Concert" - Bootleg Series Vol 4 - is probably the best release I've heard of a pre-existing bootleg. In fact, Dylan & Neil Young are finding there's a rich financial seam to be mined with official releases of live archive material...

I'm all for bootlegs. I have experienced some terrible ones when I bought a Stone Roses Live in leicester one years ago on ebay (before ebay banned the sale of bootlegs). Also got some real gems, absolute classics infact.
'We Want Moore' by Gary Moore/Mick Jagger Live in London 1992 & an extremely rare BBM (Bruce Baker Moore) bootleg from Glasgow Barrowlands '94. Both are excellent quality by my standards. Personally, I don't mind hearing people talking/cheering inbetween songs as a live album sounds unnatural to me when the crowd noise isn't recorded. But thats just me..
Also, the band Widespread Panic are officially releasing bootlegs via their official website, some of them are quite vintage.

Of the ones I have..........the best are certainly Beatles ones..................Some of the early ones on vinyl were not good quality but, there was a set called Ultra Rare Trax and these were studio quality..............From then on they became the bench mark and many of the others I have are of that quality.............( Which must have promopted EMI ) ...............There are some great boxed sets............ I have Artifacts 1 and this is a lavish boxed set with five discs a great booklet and excellent quality.
I have hoped one day to get at the Japanese ones ...............some of these are sublime and one or two of them change hads for vast sums of money.
