I got to know this music through my russian wife.
Akvarium and Boris Grebenshchikov started out in the the underground music scene the early 70s as their music was critical of the then soviet regime. But since glasnost and perestroika, they have become of the best loved russian bands. BG has produced a wide variety of albums ranging from folk and rock to even reggae !
For me personally, ´Russkij Albom´is Boris´finest hour. It is folk in its finest tradition.
If you have the chance to get this album, one should defenitly listen to the track ´volki i vorony´ (the wolf and the crow). Even if you do not speak any russian, the music will paint the most wonderful pictures of beautiful russian landscapes.
A lot of his music can be found on youtube and one should defenitly check out the wonderful video to song ´gorod´.
