How did you first find out about your favourite band(s) ?

I've only just recently figured out who my favourite band are. I've decided I like The Cure more than any other music artist (mostly because Disintegration really is the best album ever made)

So here goes (my answers in purple):

• How old were you when you first found them? about 11 years old
  
• What were the circumstances in which you found hem? There was a program on TV at the time about music videos - and quite a few of their videos were on there. I liked them on songs such as Love Cats and Inbetween Days and it went on from there
  
• Are there any special people connected with the find ? Maybe my sister - she also discovered them at the same time
  
• What attracted you to the band? At the time I first discovered them it was mostly the quirkiness and originality of the material. Later I came to appreciate the extraordinary beauty, the lyrical depth and also the gothier gloomier moments. And the quirkiness and originality of course :biggrin:
  
  
• How has your admiration for the band developed over the years ? I've only grown to love them more and more - discovering the Disintegration album, the Wish album, early stuff like A Forest and Jumping Someone Else's Train, cute tunes like Catch, some of their weird b-sides has only increased the high esteem in which I hold this band. There's an intelligence, a beauty, a sensitivity yet also an accessibility to their work that makes it hard not to like them I think.
  
• What is the story of your exploration of their catalogue: Did you queue to get the releases on their day of issue? Erm... no. I'm never quite that sadly obsessive. The story of my exploration of their catalogue is that I started off with the Standing on a beach compilation, then got Japanese Whispers and Disintegration, then got Head on the Door, then The Top and some of the tracks off Wish, and so on and so on.
  
• Have you sen them live ? If so how often and what were your impressions? Unfortunately I have never seen them live and have always wanted to but one way or another (mostly financial pressures or missing out on knowing when they were touring and where) I've always missed them. I fear now that it may be too late and they're no longer as good as they once were.
  
  
• Are there any other anecdotes you can share about them. Not really. Boring this, isn't it?
  
  
• How do you feel about them today , have you attitudes changed ? Love them. Their absolute golden era was 85-92. They were also very good in the early eighties. Since Wish they're not quite as good but I still love the Cure for what they achieved in making what I consider to be truly wonderful music. Robert Smith is someone I'd very much like to meet.

I don't really know The Cure, but I once bought the soundtrack to the movie Marie-Antoinette, which is truly great by the way (the soundtrack), and this song became my favorite of the whole soundtrack. I really like the feeling and the ambiance this song create.

Based on that, I just wonder if there's an album that is more in the mood of this song, or if the song is just a one-time phenomena. I remember giving a listen to the album containing the song (Faith), but I remember also not liking it very much.

It's funny, but if GMR hasn't heard them, I was going to suggest both the Faith, & Pornography albums.

They're not exactly melodic, and they take a few listenings to familiarise, but both albums contain some of their best work. Total gloom, but magnificent with it...

But I like this song so much...

I didn't know the song actually. I've never owned the Faith album. ButI checked it out on Youtube and it sounds fairly characteristic of their older work (Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography). On first listen I find it a bit monotonous and boring, as if it's building up to something but never gets to that something. But there is a surreal and gloomy atmosphere that makes me feel that it could be a grower.

I used to have Pornography on cassette. And I would definitely place it 2nd after Disintegration in my list of favourite Cure albums. I've been meaning to get Faith for some time now.

My brother was in the navy (submarines) and he came home one day with a copy of 'Wish You Were Here' under his arm. He put it on the turntable and I was completely mesmerised. It was as if a spaceship had just landed in the room. And I was hooked - for life. I still am.
