Reaching to e-bay for the enlarged cover shot. Don't get to post in this genre often, but except for a couple of tracks here, these guys are hard to fit, so why not. Canadian band formed in 1969. Says they disbanded in '85, but reformed in '96, with an album out in 2005. This is the only one I have, which looks like their third studio effort. First album was primarily in French, but nothing here like that. No surprise that they toured heavily in France with that debut and developed a European following. That never happened in the states. A couple of Felix Awards (local thing I guess) for best album in Quebec. After the breakup some solo work came out from the members, but I guess that didn't work out. Thus the dinosaur tour. Love that church organ intro for Edgar, which makes it my fav. Did not think I would find any clips for this but once again youtube surprised me.

Nice metal group from the era for me. Never a huge following, but enough to keep them going for 40 years. This is their 5th album. Beginnings only merited interest in Germany, France and Japan, and it wasn't until Scorpions Michael Schenker joined the band in 1974 that the audience widened. He didn't stick around too long, rejoining Scorpions in 1978, but he brought the group some notoriety. Too many lineup changes over the years to even mention, but the group is now performing with three of the five original members. The follow up album to this (Lights Out) would find the bands peak popularity in the states, and their first charting in the U.K., but this one would only reach #169 here.

Worst Track - A Fool In Love

Best Track - I'm A Loser

Last train's eleven, it's now quarter past
Why're you tryin' to make the evenin' move so fast
I'm in real trouble but I can't go back home
They locked the doors and I'm left out alone

You can come to my place and sleep on the couch
Lots of people do it and we won't leave you out
Hard times out on the Street
Hard times, hard to beat

The painted lies they all hand you
I'm a loser on the road
I'm a loser on the road, yeah

Euston station and it's cold as ice
AlI night specials, they move you on
But me and Ginger over there
We got this thing where we really take care

You can come to my place and sleep on the couch
Lots of people do it and we won't leave you out
Hard times out on the Street
Hard times, hard to beat

The painted lies they all hand you
I'm a loser on the road
I'm a loser on the road, yeah

I'm a loser, I'm a loser

KISS "dynasty" 1979. vinyl and cd. #2 AUST, #9 US, #50 UK

there was discontent in the Kiss camp in 1977, and in 1978 all members took a break and recorded solo albums, they also released a best of double album in that year "Double Platinum", the members decided to give it one more roll of the dice and in 1979 they gave us this this one.
this was also the last album drummer Peter Criss played on before he left the band, even though his face featured on their 1981 follow up album 'unmasked'
two big psuedo-disco singles came from this one "i was made for lovin' you" and "sure know something" both by Paul Stanley, and they are the only real highlights on Dynasty along with Ace Frehley's cover of The Stones "2000 Man", there are two other good songs, namely,Ace Frehley's "Hard Times", along with Peter Criss' "Dirty Livin'". the rest of the album is really quite forgettable.
Paul Stanley was always the most talented one of the group and this shows on most of their albums.

My favorite Aerosmith album, and I think the only one that would reach a love rating. Their third album and although not reaching their peak yet, Walk This Way was the biggest hit thus far. Sweet Emotion was the debut single. It only reached #36 on the charts here with Walk This Way going to #10. I will add that I totally hated the Run DMC version of this song which was a big hit. This album peaked at #11. It went on to become their second best selling album after Get A Grip. I guess those two singles rank 1-2 for me here but I love three others also. This was back in my limited head banging days and it has held up all these years. Unrelated here but I might add, Steven Tylers stint on American Idol thus far, has given me some new respect for the guy.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - You See Me Crying

Best Track - Walk This Way

Backstroke lover always hidin' 'neath the covers
'Til I talked to your daddy he say
He said you ain't seen nothin' 'til you're down on a muff and
Then you're sure to be a-changin' your way
I met a cheerleader was a real young bleeder
Oh the times I could reminisce
'Cause the best things of lovin' with her sister and her cousin
Only started with a little kiss
A like this

See-saw swingin' with the boys in the school
And your feet flyin' up in the air
Singin' hey diddle diddle
With your kitty in the middle of the swing like you didn't care
So I took a big chance at the high school dance
With a missy who was ready to play
Wasn't me she was foolin' 'cause she knew what she was doin'
And I know love was here to stay
When she told me to

Walk this way
Walk this way
Walk this way
Walk this way
Walk this way
Walk this way
Walk this way
Walk this way

A just gimme a kiss
Like this

School girl sweetie with a sassy kinda classy
Little skirt's climbin' way up the knee
It was three young ladies in a school gym locker
When I noticed they were lookin' at me
I was a high school loser never made it with a lady
'Til the boys told me something I missed
Then my next door neighbor with a daughter had a favor
So I gave her just a little kiss
A like this

Seesaw swingin' with the boys in the school
And your feet flyin' up in the air
I sing hey diddle diddy
Wit'cha kitty in the middle of the swing like ya didn't care
So I took a big chance at the high school dance
With a missy who was ready to play
Wasn't me she was foolin' 'cause she knew what she was doin'
When she told me how to walk this way
She told me to

Walk this way
Talk this way
Walk this way
Walk this way
Walk this way
Walk this way
Walk this way
Talk this way

Is there a section for cheesy 80s music? This tune by Steve Stevens (guitarist from Billy Idol's band) from his '89 solo debut 'Atomic Playboys' is one of my latest ventures.

Gamma- 'Gamma 1' (1979)

Trax:

 1. "Thunder & Lightning" (Montrose, Pattison) - 4:37
 2. "I'm Alive" (Clint Ballard, Jr.) - 3:18
 3. "Razor King" (Montrose, Pattison) - 5:53
 4. "No Tears" (Pattison) - 4:53
 5. "Solar Heat" (Montrose) - 3:09
 6. "Ready For Action" (Montrose) - 3:39
 7. "Wish I Was" (Mickey Newbury) - 5:16
 8. "Fight To The Finish" (Alcivar, Montrose) - 6:25

Before I rant and stuff.. the line-up!

Davey Pattison- vocals
Ronnie Montrose- guitar
Jim Alcivar- keys
Alan Fitzgerald- bass
Skip Gillette- drums

Looking at the above line-up, you may be thinking 'oh god here Lewis goes again with his repetitive blues/classic rock bullshit' but this album really is something else!

Elaborate? Well, for a start this album features Ronnie Montrose who is (at least IMO) one of the best guitarists ever to 'rock' the planet (had to avoid that cliche there). As well as that, this album stands out from other releases of it's kind as it incorporates the usage of vocoders in several of the tracks in this album, namely the energetic opener 'Thunder & Lightning' and more prominently on 'I'm Alive'.

Time for a bit of background! In 1979, after Ronnie Montrose had disbanded his namesake band a few years earlier and experimented with his 'Open Fire' album of '78, he set out to form a new band.

After putting the rest of the band together, all Montrose sought to find a suitable vocalist. Renowned rock promoter and Ronnie's then manager Bill Graham had heard a little known scottish vocalist named Davey Pattison (who would later go on to sing in Robin Trower's band) and subsequently invited him to fly over from Scotland to the US to take up the role of lead vocals in Gamma. Thus, the band's line-up was complete!

Gamma circa 79/80- vocalist Pattison can be seen in the black shirt with Ronnie to the left.

Their debut album was recorded rather swiftly and actually released in '79. Songs on the album varies from hard/classic rock on 'Thunder & Lightning' and 'Ready For Action' to more chilled out blues-based numbers such as 'No Tears' or 'Wish I Was' and a blistering instrumental named 'Solar Heat' on which one half is an atmospheric eerie keyboard intro from Alcavair which progresses into a high intensity guitar jam from Ronnie himself. Album ends on a positive and upbeat note with the rocker 'Fight To The Finish' which is perhaps the most memorable track on the album.

'Gamma 1' most importantly for me showcases the early vocal talents of Davey Pattison and provided a career-beginning platform on which he would later be recommended to join Robin Trower in 1986 by none-other than James Dewar himself!

Despite the album's overall 'AOR' sound, it does have a few unique twists to it. Apart from Pattison's powerful vocal delivery on several of the tracks mentioned before and the level of energy that consistently radiates from this record, we are treated to an experimentation of vocoders which bears almost identical resemblence to that of Neil Young's 'Trans' record (Lloyd?) which was only recorded a few years later. (1982)

After this debut, amongst several line-up changes (with the obvious mainstay of Montrose & Pattison) Gamma would only release another two albums ('Gamma II' in '80), and ('Gamma III' in '82) before disbanding until a brief reunion and fourth record in 2000 which I am still yet to hear.

All in all, a great album from a great and harshly underrated band.

Fortunately, a fellow music lover has uploaded many of the sublime tracks from this album and I have featured some of them below. Despite the lack of visualization (i.e. blank screen), they are still worth checking out!

Thunder & Lightning

I'm Alive-
According to wiki, this song was a hit in america reaching no.60 on billboard charts. Remember anyone?

No Tears

Solar Heat

Fight To The Finish

If anyone enjoyed hearing any of the above songs then be sure to check out 'Mean Streak' which is surely their overall best track (from their second release).
