Follow up to the masterpiece, Squeezing Out Sparks, and it doesn't come close. Hard to follow that one. Two great tracks and two duds. New producer Jimmy Iovine was label Aristas push for stardom for Graham, but that didn't work out. Jimmy was coming off of great work with the Boss and Tom Petty. In fact the Boss is listed as background vocals here on Endless Night. This album was the last with The Rumour. Not sure how that parting came about. This album never even charted here but did reach #11 in the U.K.
Dammit, no clip for my favorite.

This was a burned copy of a download courtesy of Robbie.

Unfortunately he didn't include any details or track listing, so I had the laptop on whilst listening, trying to figure out what I was listening to. Asked him earlier which album we'd been listining to, and he thought it was their debut Fire of Love. It certainly wasn't that, and the closest I could get to it was their last release Lucky Jim although the track listing didn't fit particularly well ?!

I'm fairly sure Gun Club albums have appeared on MD, but they were completely new to me despite being familiar with the band name.

Main man Jeffrey Lee Pierce epitomised the "live fast, die young" philosophy of R&R excess, and sparked out a couple of years after their last album at the age of 37. Evidently, from this selection, he was a talented guitarist, excellent song-writer, and fair vocalist, so it's a shame he ended up in the Netherlands (nothing wrong with clogland, Griff, it's just that he had to move from his native US due to under-apreciation), which was the only place where he had a workable audience.

The music is a curious blend of Alt-Rock, & Blues. The song-writing kind of reminds me of Warren Zevon's style, which is a very good thing. There's also the occasional hint of RHCP to spice things up.

Very good stuff, this band are straight onto the Buy List.

Robbie strikes again.

UK "band" with an ever-changing line-up.

The AllMusic reviews for this liken it to Mogwai, Godspeed You ! Black Emperor, and Sigur Ros, and whilst I can see their point, the first half of this 77 minute album is stacked high with Pink Floyd influences. I half expected the Echoes submarine ping to appear. Most of the second half is closer to Sigur Ros, and is largely Ambient with lots of shimmering guitars.

Vocals are pretty sparse, which makes this a predominantly instrumental record. Liked this very much. Another for the Buy List.

No AllMusic rating for this album.

Such dreamy vocals from She. Does anybody ever notice Him? Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward make up this duo. Zooey also serves as a part time actress, with several film credits. They hooked up while on the set of the film The Go-Getter when asked by the director to do a duet for the closing credits. A bond was formed. Debut album in 2008 which I have not heard. Although that one did not fare that well in sales, it did receive critical acclaim leading to a follow up which has done quite well reaching #6 in the states. Two singles have been released of Thieves and In The Sun, neither of which have charted. I actually expected this album to reach the love mark, but even after my customary 5 spins, it didn't reach it. Still a very good album. I must say, although still adorable, Zooey appears to have a severe case of stage fright when performing. When Matt sings on track 4, you can tell why he's not the focal point of the team.

Worst Track - Ridin' In My Car

Best Track - Lingering Still

I like to learn things slow
I like learning a lot
I like to get it all again and in the end
You know you get what you got
I like to mean what I say
But it don't always come through
Because if I say it all again, again, again
It doesn't make it all true

And the world's like a science
And I'm like a secret
And I saw you lingering still, still
I saw you lingering still

It's all just news to me
Don't really care if it hurts
Because if I knock it I won't know it
Then I know that it will only get worse
He was different at first
But then he won't understand
Because he's never going to know me
If he doesn't want to just shake my hand

And the world's like a science
And I'm like a secret
And I saw you lingering still, still
I saw you lingering still

Aha, now we're back on track. Superb effort except for that Hunters Lullaby thing. Shoulda shelved that. Seventh album from the man, with a lot more instrumentation than the last one, and excellent backing from Jennifer Warnes throughout. Probably his most well known track on here with Hallelujah. Not that it was a hit or anything, just that I have heard it covered more than any other Cohen song. K.D. Lang doing it the best imo. Still can't match Leonards, but it comes damn close. Unbelievably to me, Cohens Columbia label passed on this in the U.S., saying it was not up to par. Luckily it was picked up by independent label Passport. Columbia later had a change of heart, which probably just means someone new came on the scene. The album never saw the charts here because of that pass maybe. dumbasses. Included that K.D. Lang clip at the end of this. Not a big fan of hers, but man, what a passionate performance. You go girl/guy!

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Hunters Lullaby

Best Track - Hallelujah

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
This is love not some kind of a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Yeah but it's not a complaint that you hear tonight,
It's not the laughter of someone who claims to have seen the light
No it's a cold and it's a very lonely Hallelujah.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah…

BOB GELDOF "how to compose popular songs that will sell" 2011, cd.

believe it or not, Geldof used to be a singer....long before the Live-Aid, humanitarian, crossbearing Bob rose to the surface.
there's no venom, wrath or political messages here to send world leaders scurrying for their little holes, instead there's ten good tracks and one hidden track(God, how i hate hidden tracks!, surely if theyre good enough to appear on the album then they should get recognition on the sleeve and disc!).
the album appears to be written and sung by a man content to have achieved what he has and happy to be where he is now.
"mary says" sounds very much like CSN and possibly CSNY could have recorded.
"here's to you" has definate elements of George Harrison attached.
"blowfish" is a full on distorted vocal track with short sharp chords-a good rocker for a man of 59 years young.
the rest of the album is quite catchy and definately grows upon repeated listens.
on first listen, i agreed with the 'new release' rating of 1.8 that was given by Music Head, however, i am sure had he been able to listen to the album a few more times his rating would have increased to just beyond the 2.0 mark.
do yourself a favour and listen to this album if you have the chance, you wont be dissapointed!
