JACKSON BROWNE "the very best of..." cd,1997.

i know Gryphon seems to have a few reservastions with JB, but i sure dont!
not sure where to put him neither...folk(for folk rock),pop or classic rock, but i decided on classic rock because, well, just because...?!
never a huge artist as in top 10 hits anywhere, but a consistant top 20 hit maker over a period of almost 20yrs from 1972ish..albums pretty much the same, had a peak from 1978-82ish,otherwise,reasonable sales in top 20s each side of that time period.
not really sure, but if i had do describe his music i would have to say he is a cross between say James Taylor and The Eagles maybe?
some absolutlely brilliant radio friendly pop standards on here that have stood the test of time very well, enough great tracks on here to push this one into the "love" range also...sort of like Steely Dan IMO...made a hell of a lot of great songs but always played second fiddle to other artists back in the day...the same as Small Faces,Who and Manfred Mann did in the 60s.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Its was hacks like Clapton, Nicky Hopkins, George Harrison, and Klaus Voormann, Alan White, Ringo, Billy Preston, and Gary Wright, and all the members of Badfinger having fun. Like Mark Knopfler said, "All good things are NOT 3:05!" (I have even heard a rumor that Floyd's Richard Wright played organ on ALMP.)

I believe Jackson Browne can be credited with what was called "California Jam" when it grew out of a few West coast singer/songwriters. The style really gained stregth when the Eagles had a hit with JB's "Take It Easy" and grew from there. "Doctor My Eyes" off Saturate Before Using is anothe example of the "Jam" sound. I believe the Eagles were of this ilk rather than a clone of Poco as Poco was MUCH more country leaning, especially early on.

nice evaluation Gater...! California Jam sounds pretty good to me, as the feel of the songs has the same feel as the Stills-Young Band sound also.

since the brilliant "SMiLE" was finally released, I've been getting really into these guys. Very enjoyable record with some fine melody craft

A flat liner. Not in the dead sense, it's completely alive. I like everything on this album. Just mean I don't love
anything nor do I not like anything on this album, thus a flat liner. Now that I cleared that up, this is Iggy
struttin' his stuff. Surprising this far into his career, his twelth album including the Stooges era. He could
still do it with some attitude 23 years ago, unlike that dreadful performance on American Idol last year. All is
forgiven Iggy, a man's gotta eat. Steve Young plays on here as an added treat. Hilarious that the album is
considered heavy metal. Listed on Kerrang's (Brit magazine) "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time" list and
got Iggy a grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock/Metal performance in 1989. Ranks up there with that Tull win.
Granted Iggy had outgrown his punk image, but the heavy metal image just doesn't work for me. But hey, I'm past my
prime, so what do I know? In fairness, I guess most of the music on here would be considered metal, it's just hard
to say Iggy is metal. I'll compromise and put him in rock. The album could only muster a #110 on the Billboard charts,
doing a little better in the U.K. at #61.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Strong Girl

Best Track - Squarehead

You can kick me out of a real good jive
You can use my friendship like a doorknob
You can make me super styrofoam
You can make me feel all alone
You can stuff hamburger in my head
But I ain't gonna be no squarehead

You can tempt me with a pretty girl
You can call on me in fancy fur
You can say, "Just do it, everyone is"
You can tell me that it's just showbiz
You can turn my life from green to red
But I ain't gonna be no squarehead

You can burn my bridges down for laughin', ha ha ha ha
You can call me a fool for crashin', woh
You can make me stare down at the floor
You can make me listen while you snore
You can do all these things that I have said
But I ain't gonna be no squarehead
Let's go!

You can make my position low as a dog
You can trick me with your social fog
You can criticize my very bag
You can call my treasures a heap of slag
But you might as well eat lunch instead
Cause I ain't gonna be no squarehead
I ain't gonna be no squarehead
I ain't gonna be no squarehead
I ain't gonna be no squarehead
No, I ain't gonna be no squarehead
No, I ain't gonna be no squarehead
No, I ain't gonna be no squarehead
No, I ain't gonna be no squarehead
I ain't gonna be no
I ain't gonna be no

Now THIS is interesting. Reminds me of early YES at times. Very good. Thx for the tip-off. Must buy.

This is my second listen ..first time naaah !...second time around ...yahhh ..I like this album ! also sings a duet with Stevie Nicks...master musician par excellence imho.

Nice duets with Stevie Nicks and Martina McBride. Some of the songs remind me of Dylan.

A very good listen !
