What Are You Listening To?
from my library (cd)

[Image: 220px-I%27m_Your_Man_-_Leonard_Cohen.jpg]

What better way to get back to listening to my own music than with a Cohen album. Hope he don't sound like Weezer. Nope, still Leonard. Lovin' this one too, though not as much as previous outings. Still trying to figure out wtf that Jazz Police was all about. Cringe when I hear that. Leadoff of First We Take Manhattan, really like it, but the disco beat makes it not enough to love it. Can't get by that. The last two are just good songs, but with only 8 tracks on here, and 4 that I love, this comes out high enough. Always good to hear Jennifer Warnes backing Leonard on about half of these. Album was completely overlooked in most places, but hey, it got a #1 in Norway, and a #48 with the brits. Go Leonard!

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Jazz Police

Best Track - I'm Your Man

If you want a lover
I'll do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
I'll wear a mask for you
If you want a partner
Take my hand
Or if you want to strike me down in anger
Here I stand
I'm your man

If you want a boxer
I will step into the ring for you
And if you want a doctor
I'll examine every inch of you
If you want a driver
Climb inside
Or if you want to take me for a ride
You know you can
I'm your man

Ah, the moon's too bright
The chain's too tight
The beast won't go to sleep
I've been running through these promises to you
That I made and I could not keep
Ah but a man never got a woman back
Not by begging on his knees
Or I'd crawl to you baby
And I'd fall at your feet
And I'd howl at your beauty
Like a dog in heat
And I'd claw at your heart
And I'd tear at your sheet
I'd say please, please
I'm your man

And if you've got to sleep
A moment on the road
I will steer for you
And if you want to work the street alone
I'll disappear for you
If you want a father for your child
Or only want to walk with me a while
Across the sand
I'm your man

If you want a lover
I'll do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
I'll wear a mask for you

I admit I get duped occasionally. This wound up on my end-of-year buy list. Most on that list are albums that I have heard online and liked. I can't believe this album was one of those. Sometimes I will throw on that list, albums that were highly rated by the published end-of-year lists. Just to see what the hoopla is. This album must be one of those. I also think I saw Mr. Stevens on one of the late night shows, and liked what I saw. Anyway, I bought this and I don't like it. Maybe too techno overall. But tricked by the beautiful leadoff track. The only track I love here. That smoothness ends after that track, as the drum machines and loops kick in for the rest of the trip. Liked that last track, but not meant for human consumption for 25 minutes. Kept me waiting that long for something to happen, that never did. Guy reminds me of Beck, and he has been around for probably as long. First thing I have heard, and probably the last to buy. This album went to #7 on the Billboard charts.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Bad Communication

Best Track - Futile Devices

It's been a long, long time since I've memorized your face
It's been four hours now since I've wandered through your place
And when I sleep on your couch I feel very safe
And when you bring the blankets I cover up my face
I do love you
I do love you

And when you play guitar I listen to the strings buzz
The metal vibrates underneath your fingers
And when you crochet I feel mesmerized and proud
And I would say I love you, but saying it out loud is hard
So I won't say it at all
And I won't stay very long
But you are the life I needed all along
I think of you as my brother
Although that sounds dumb
Words are futile devices

Ed's discoveries. Their 7th from 2007.

Exactly as per the title, this album is an exploration of emotions of all types.

Alt Country/Folk with some glorious vocal melodies that wouldn't have shamed Lennon & McCartney. There's a thing; I've just typed "shamed", and there's a track called Shame on the album. Subliminal post-infitration !!

Excellent work.

AllMusic 4/5 stars.

SID VISCIOUS "sid sings" 1979, vinyl. #30 UK

i hate it when this happens...my third "do not like" in a row, it upsets my whole day or evening, whatever the case may be!

it is a noisy, uncoorinated bloody mess(im not refering to Nancy's body after she was murdered), im refering to the poor quality of the album.
sounds as though it was recorded on a portable home cassette recorder, sounds even worse than i'd imagine a demo to sound.
anyway, Sid's backing band here were the "idols" who were the remnants of New York Dolls.
the album is full of covers ranging from NY Dolls,Stooges,Ramones,Monkeys,Cochran,Sinatra, and the Pistols.
i implore you do not buy this piece of crap...trade it with MH for his worst album(you'll probably end up with Aqua but its a step up from this one, i guarentee it!)...do yourself a favour and buy either "never mind the bollocks" or "great rock n roll swindle" where you'll get the good versions of "my way" and "something else".

MY MORNING JACKET "the tennessee fire" 1999, cd.

this is the debut album from the four lads from Louisville, Kentucky.
vocalist Jim James has the same vocal quality as that of Neil Young, in that he can sound quite fragile yet warm, distant yet near. the bands melodies and harmonies are much the same in that they sound sweet yet lornful all at the same time.
its a hard album to place as it sounds a bit countryish with its acoustic sounds yet its still alternative enough to attract the youngsters.
theres nothing really great on this one, just a steady debut set which shows glimpses of the talent they have.
not really a good starting point for someone to pick up on them, more for the fan to enjoy, the tracks sound far better live than the studio recordings.

1994 debut from Steve Albini's band.

His main job is as ethical Alternative producer to the great and small. Exorbitant fees for major labels subsidise his work with struggling, undiscovered bands. He specialises in stripped bare production, preferring live in the studio recording with little or no over-dubbing. It seems to work, as there's a constant supply of happy customers.

This album is typical of the Albini sound, and is a primal slice of Alt Rock. Great listening.
