What Are You Listening To?
from my library (vinyl)

I was probably still high from the first one (metaphorically of course) when this second album came out. Nearly as successful as the first, commercially, reaching #3 on the charts. Two singles of People Are Strange at #12 and Love Me Two Times at #25. The songs on here were actually left over from the sessions for their debut. Moonlight Drive is among the first Morrison compositions. Loving 5 tracks here, favorite was tough, but I gotta go with the 11 minute closer When The Music's Over. Similar to The End from the debut, I can just melt away in 11 minutes. A good buzz, headphones on, eyes closed. I'm somewhere else. Nothing I can say I didn't like at all on here. A couple where Morrison doesn't sing and I don't know who does, I guess are my least likeable. Think I rate this better than the debut and I was hooked. I was a young punk hanging out with a motorcycle gang in 1967. All they played was the Doors. The live clip for Love Me Two Times, is from a European tour in 1967. Shows what a great talent Morrison was. A great loss to music on his death.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - My Eyes Have Seen You

Best Track - When The Music's Over

Yeah, c'mon

When the music's over
When the music's over, yeah
When the music's over
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights, yeah

When the music's over
When the music's over
When the music's over
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights

For the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
Music is your only friend
Until the end
Until the end
Until the end

Cancel my subscription to the Resurrection
Send my credentials to the House of Detention
I got some friends inside

The face in the mirror won't stop
The girl in the window won't drop
A feast of friends
"Alive!" she cried
Waitin' for me
Outside!

Before I sink
Into the big sleep
I want to hear
I want to hear
The scream of the butterfly

Come back, baby
Back into my arm
We're gettin' tired of hangin' around
Waitin' around with our heads to the ground

I hear a very gentle sound
Very near yet very far
Very soft, yeah, very clear
Come today, come today

What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down

I hear a very gentle sound
With your ear down to the ground
We want the world and we want it...
We want the world and we want it...
Now
Now?
Now!

Persian night, babe
See the light, babe
Save us!
Jesus!
Save us!

So when the music's over
When the music's over, yeah
When the music's over
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights

Well the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
Music is your only friend
Until the end
Until the end
Until the end!

Number four, from 1969.

My favourite of theirs so far. The sound of a band hitting their stride, and thoroughly enjoying themselves. Great rootsy R&R...

great album Tiggi, this one and "cosmo's factory" are my favourites, and i agree with the 'enjoying themselves' comment also.

i find all their albums as good as any 'best of' set they have released, their album tracks are pure quality

After a 4 year break for solo projects, this is the sixth album from Bryan and the boys. Not my favorite, but it'll do. The cutting edge had become dull by this point. This did become their best selling album in the U.S. at #23. The group was always bigger in the U.K. where it reached #7. First single was Trash which did nothing but the follow up of the dance flavored Dance Away (favorite) became a hit in the U.K. along with the next single of Angel Eyes which I don't even like. Those last 2 were both remixed in an extended version for the dance clubs. Dance Away didn't even crack the top 40 here. For me this album was a little too disco flavored. I hated disco. My music life was only saved by the punk movement of the time.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Cry, Cry, Cry

Best Track - Dance Away

Yesterday - well it seemed so cool
When I walked you home, kissed goodnight
I said "it´s love" you said "all right"
It´s funny how I could never cry
Until tonight and you pass by
Hand in hand with another guy
You´re dressed to kill and guess who´s dying?
Dance away the heartache
Dance away the tears
- dance away
Loneliness is a crowded room
Full of open hearts turned to stone
All together all alone
All at once my whole world had changed
Now i´m in the dark, off the wall
Let the strobe light up them all
I close my eyes and dance till dawn
- dance away
Now I know I must walk the line
Until I find an open door
There was I - many times a fool
I hope and pray, but not too much
Out of reach is out of touch
All the way is far enough
- dance away

Their second album, from 1968.

Listening to this, I wondered if the review of this in the Beginner's Guide was unduly harsh.

The material lacks a bit of cohesion, but there are still a few spine-chilling moments here. Given that this is the sound of a band searching for new direction following Barrett's departure, it's not bad.

Via iPod in the garden this PM.

Decent performance and some good material make for a reasonable live album, from 1993.

These MTV jobs do leave me a bit cold sometimes, but they're a good enough way to hear some recentish performances by fine musicians in a more intimate situation than they'd normally play.

Live double album (ask your Dad...) from 1986, from the man to whom Led Zeppelin took their hats off.

Harper at this stage would routinely tour with a full band, as a duo with son Nick, or solo. This album covers all bases, and is pieced together from performances from the previous couple of years.

Much of this is solo & Folkey, but there's enough of the band material to nudge it into being a Rock album. Fine line.

The songs are really poems set to music, and I've almost always preferred the intimacy of his solo performances.

Goodish.

1984 debut from long haired counter-culture types.

The music here is a mix of spacey Proggish Rock (think Hawkwind or Steve Hillage), with a bit of Dub, and some Jazzy touches. No vocals, but plenty of entertaining jamming.

Good for staring at the big tree in the neigbours garden !!

Not much I need to say about this.

Top class songs from start to finish. Great album.
