What Are You Listening To?

THE POLICE "outlandos d'amour", 1978, vinyl. #7 UK, #15 AU, #23 US

the brilliant debut album by Sting & company.
after this album they were pretty well lodged in the top 10 albums and singles charts in UK,AU,US until their demise in 1983.
the band knew how to write great rock songs throughout their five studio albums and i cant recall hearing a bad track by them.
this album is more rock sounding than the others they recorded and certainly more raw in their approach to production.
the songs as a whole while maintaining their reggae roots are laden with explosive guitars and powerful vocals...yes Sting is capable of belting out a tune and this album proves it.
Roxanne is the only real quiet song on this musically, but lyrically its very strong. Be My Girl/Sally is about sexual perversion and blow-up dolls, and Masoko Tanga has at times a somewhat world music quality to it....the rest:great rock 'n' roll!!
it is a f##king rock masterpiece from the punk explosion of the era and one of the best debut albums of all time IMHO.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Kate's third, from 1980.

This was the first album she released that convinced me she was going to have a really interesting career. The song-writing gets more adventurous here, and she grabs some controversial issues to base her songs around, including almost paedophile thoughts (Infant Kiss), & environmental armageddon (Breathing).

KB got her hands on a Fairlight CMI for this album, and it's plastered all over the record, which dates the music somewhat.

Nevertheless, a great album.

AllMusic 3/5 stars.

I've had a few Purple albums in my time, but this is the only one in the current collection.

Mark II Purple's live album from 1972.

Rocks hard, but I could do without The Mule, a 10 minute showcase for Ian Paice's talents, most of which is a drum solo. Tedious.

Despite this, a good album.

Isn't it though.
Had to put up with that on that Rascals album I did recently.
drum solo's are only meant for drum players

Tiggi,

Are you a telepathic or what ???? I was just thinking about suggesting a best album poll for Deep Purple but I said Made in Japan couldn't be on it since live lps are excluded !!!! I bought this album in a New Brunswick village in 1973 along with Paul Simon's There Goes Rhymin' Simon...that's all they had in rock.

The Live LP is their best work imo . I'm not a huge fan of the Smoke on the Water album Machine Head, personally and that studio lp would easily top the best lp poll.

One good thing I can play the Smoke intro...very easy. lol the rest....Sir Ritchie Blackmore ....NO WAY EVER !!!

I really liked the 'Made in Europe' album as well. 'Burn' as well.

ooooooh...very spooky, Tiggi. Maybe after awhile of emailing back and forth there is some sort of telepathic connection ???...I dunno.

NY Dolls - aren't they great ! Energetic and hard drivin' ! Very big for a little while back in the day. They were a few years ahead of the Ramones and Sex Pistols.
