We are all aware of the fact that we now have access on the Internet to hundreds if not thousands of albums and songs. However has the quality of music or talent detiorated somewhat because of this ? Artists can now post their music in hopes that they will recruit new fans.
I am with the opinion that music has actually for the most part improved because I am discovering many new and old artists that I have never been exposed to and I like what I hear most of the time !
I personally know a few musicians who play professionally and believe me their dedication and creativeness to their music is genuine! and the music is good !!!!
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!

I think that a lot of music is overly produced and compressed. None the less there is still a lot of good music out there and more being released every day. The technology has certainly opened and expanded the field, allowing more musicians to get there stuff out, so the problem is sifting through it all to find the "good" stuff.

Our access to different bands has most definitely increased. With that our access to great, good, mediocre and just plain awful performers has also increased. Now I can listen to the garage band that lives beside Steve and he can listen to the garage band that lives beside me (though we live on opposite sides of the continent). Might be unmined gold or absolute dreck.
I love the ability to search out new music, but the journey is riddled with the oft heard response "yeahhh no, next one please" whenever find the performers that I'm not liking. It never ceases to amaze me how you can find out about a band that used to be obscure and now not only have an album/albums but have bought t-shirts , patches or other swag from the band and possibly written to them.

Agree wholeheartedly with both of you. There's never been a better time to be a music head...
Easy access to what's out there makes it a much easier job to reach what we all want, and there's plenty of good stuff out there to hunt down.
Wonder what the situation will be in, say, 20 years' time...

There's just so much more out there to sift through. A lot of it is downright awful. A lot of what I hear if I turn on the radio (which rarely happens) is downright awful. At the same time you can find bands you like if you dig deep enough. Or have a website like this which we all have access to to get recommendations

OK after more thought yes, the quality of music has deteriorated and it has been since I was born probably. I don't think the Internet necessarily has anything to do with it. I blame the record labels for not seeking out talent but only seeking out what sells quickly. For example pretty faces and hot bodies. A band like the Rolling Stones would never get signed today. They were too ugly. So, maybe video killing the radio star has more to do with it.

Modern technology makes it much easier for an artist to get heard, one way or another, which makes record companies (read as greedy, blood-sucking vampires) less valid. That in and of itself is great for music! Less non-artist intervention if you will.

all valid points guys!!!!.....but one point seems to have slipped people's minds.....
whereas vinyl albums tended to last not much longer than say 38-40 minutes, cd's last approx 75 minutes....almost twice as long as vinyl and artists/companies seem to think that they need to fill up the available space to create an album.
this way artists are always making 'double albums' in the old vinyl system....
and as we all know most double albums are patchy at the best with numerous filler tracks and this seems to be a problem with current albums on cd.
