What Are You Listening To?

Barely sneaking in with a like grade is another of Willies mediocre albums. Never been a big fan, sorry. Only great album I know of is Red Headed Stranger. I know the guys a legend and deservedly so, just not for me. He was still at the top of his game here, with another #1 country album, #2 on the overall chart, and #1 country abum of the year. One of his best selling albums at 4 times platinum. Go figure. A #1 and #2 country single with Always On My Mind and Let It Be Me plus 3 grammys. The two best known covers were just terrible for me, Bridge Over Troubled Water and Whiter Shade Of Pale (with fellow outlaw Wayon). Some classics should just be left alone. Only two Willie penned tunes, one which was a total failure, Permanently Lonely. This quote from the allmusic review sums it up for me, "
It may have been a hit, but years later, it clearly sounds like one of his worst records."

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - A Whiter Shade Of Pale

Best Track - You Were Always On My Mind

Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could have
And maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should have
If I made you feel second best
Girl I'm sorry I was blind

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

And maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I'm so happy that you're mine
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time

But you were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me
tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
And give me
Give me one more chance
To keep you satisfied
I'll keep you satisfied

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time

But you were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

On the laptop (via Spotify).

Talented Folk vocalist & multi-instrumentalist's latest release, from 2011.

Saw her live earlier this week at the Quarterhouse, where this album was given a good airing. It's one of her more contemporary releases, although her Folk voice still marks this out as a Folk release IMV.

Good album which has already been ordered.

AllMusic hasn't yet scored this album.

i guess we'll have to disagree about Willie MH, i am a big fan, but not of this album....
"always on my mind" would have almost certainly have got *** from me...i rate his version as good as Elvis' one from the early 1970s.
as for the rest of the album though i think your grading is pretty well spot on, i cant understand why a guy who has written so many great songs would go down the road of a covers album only a couple of years after his worldwide hit album "stardust"????....
guess he may have either had too much THC or too little at the studio???

BOY AND BEAR "moonfire" cd, 2011.

this one was released here when i was in the US with Music Head and Corey kept this one aside for me to collect when i returned, stated this one could be one of the albums of the year....a big call IMO at the time but upon inspection he very well could be correct....
Debut album by these guys from Down Under who gained recognition after winning a radio station new band discovery competition in early 2010.
they got their big break supporting Mumford and Sons on their 2010 Aussie Tour and recieved as much critical acclaim as Mumfords on that tour and the rest is history.
band went to Nashville to record this debut set with Shins/My Morning Jacket producer and what we end up with is an album of beautiful vocals and harmonies and for the most part music inline with the latest modern folk trends set by Mumford & Sons....and here's a big call by me in regards to it, it possibly has the potential to be as good as the Mumford's album and as big a seller worldwide if marketed the right way!!!
there are touches of not only Mumfords on here but also a track or two that i feel owe their beginnings back to America's "horse with no name" and some of Paul Simon's solo material.
already spawning three top 20 hits here in Australia(tracks 2,3 and 4) and reaching a respectable #2 on the album charts(only to be held off the top spot by Adele!)
i implore you all to take the time to listen to this one as this band have the potential to be huge worldwide over the next couple of years!

Just Another Diamond Day-Vashti Bunyan

I've always considered Charles Mingus's 1963 master "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" to be my favorite album, but I honestly don't know anymore. This album has struck such a deep core with me, made me feel more human than I've ever felt. I wish I could describe but I can't; it's magic. Everybody must get this album, it will change the way you hear music. If it doesn't, you're simply dead inside

Seems like everything I pick up lately is filled with covers. At least this one is straight up about it, what with
the title. I do need to break the cycle at some point. Will be glad to get into my Dylan cd's. Of course then I'll
have to suffer through Froggie Went A Courtin', um-hmm. Back to Shawn. Third album from this midwestern girl.
Surprised she could get away with a cover album after only two releases. To be fair, a lot of these songs are not
that well known. Once you get by Sting, Dylan, and Waits, most would not know the other tracks. Those three were
decent enough takes, but of course don't touch the originals. Two singles were released with Sting's classic Every
Little Thing He Does Is Magic and One Cool Remove. The latter being my favorite. Not much there lyrically but it sure is pretty. Mary Chapin Carpenter helps out. Neither single charted and the album reached a dismal #48. It did receive a grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Not sure who she lost out to. Nice choice of songs for this outing, but I'm sure craving some original material. Maybe the box will be kinder to me tomorrow.

Worst Track - Satin Sheets

Best Track - One Cool Remove

One cool remove
One cool remove
And forever let me stay
One cool remove away

One cool remove
One cool remove
See it all in a passion play
One cool remove away

One cool remove from the white sun ,
Rising like a cloud above the land .
One cool remove from the red moon ,
Falling like a hand .

One cool remove
One cool remove
And neither come nor go nor stay
One cool remove away.

One cool remove from the white sun ,
Rising like a cloud above the land .
One cool remove from the red moon ,
Falling like a hand .

One cool remove
One cool remove
And neither come nor go nor stay
One cool remove away.

Country duets were popular at the time, What with the Conway/Loretta and George/Tammy success. Kenny had two
collaboration albums with Dottie West. Helped revive her somewhat I would guess. Dottie had had her day at this
stage of her career, and a #1 country single and album with one of the hottest country acts at the time couldn't
hurt. Every Time Two Fools Collide is a great song with a nice live tv clip where both artists perform. Anyone Who
Isn't Me Tonight was also a #2 country single. Neither the album or the singles performed that well on the pop
charts. That phase was on the horizon for Kenny. This album made the duo one of the biggest duet acts ever to
become famous in country music. It was so successful that they issued another album of duets one year later.
Only that first single and the next track on the album of You And Me were tops for me with two bad tracks of The
Loving Gift and the terrible Bread cover of Baby I'm A Want You. Didn't even care for the original. Just sounded
stupid with the I'm A Want You thing. Who says that? As stupid as that Ima Be song. Sorry BEP fans.

Worst Track - Baby I'm A Want You

Best Track - Everytime Two Fools Collide

You want things your way
And I want them mine
And now we don't know
Just where to draw the line
How can love survive
If we keep choosing sides
And who picks up the pieces
Every time two fools collide

You lay the blame on me
And I put the blame on you
But why do we keep finding faults
With everything we do
And how long can we keep right and wrong
So cut and dry
And who picks up the pieces
Every time two fools collide

We can save our love
We still have the time
And I know there must be a way
But we still haven't tried
To keep our hearts from breaking
Every time two fools collide
