What Are You Listening To?

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS "the boatman's call" cd, 1997.

the tenth Bad seeds album, and follow up release to the sublime "murder ballads" set...
as im starting to write this i am five tracks into the album and already have five ***, so not sure how the rest will pan out but it looks like this is going to be a "love" album, the theme of the tracks here deal with pained love and redemption from past indiscretions....very John Cash IMO.
there are three dedications on here for PJ Harvey.."west country girl", "black hair" and "green eyes"...probably because he has openly admitted over the past that he became infatuated with her during the "murder ballads" collaborations.
lots of Cohen type sounds and lyrics on this one, a must for any cohen fan IMO(you taking notice MH!?)
as a bit of trivia...Peaches Geldof(daughter of sir Bob) has the lyrics of the opening track "into my arms" tattooed on her arms apparently?!
ok, were near the end of the disc and it looks like this one rates very high...higher than expected in fact, always loved the album just didnt think i loved it so much.

ELBOW "the seldom seen kid" cd,2008.

my fourth album for the afternoon, listening to this one on ipod...
too tired to post what i think so im posting the official Amazon review..

[h=2]Product Description[/h][h=3]Amazon.co.uk Review[/h]There are few things in life quite so liberating as the opening track on an Elbow album--they're like airlocks between the plainness of the outside world and the elaborate melancholic heave-ho that you are likely about to submerge yourself in. Following predecessors "Any Day Now", "Ribcage" and "Station Approach", "Starlings" opens their fourth album The Seldom Seen Kid rising from a bed of tumbling electronic subtlety like a depressed Atari game loading up, adding bare touches of piano, glimpses of ambient guitar, out of body background vocals, an understated pulse and a wisp of strings, before--EXCELSIS!--a fanfare avalanche of horns crashes the gate and elevates things to gasping palatial heights, before Guy Garvey's inimitable gravel tone and wrenchingly poetic reinterpretations of the everyday announce their arrival proper. It's astonishing, by far the most progressive moment on the album and if anything it sets the bar too high. But even when the pace dips, and songs like "Mirrorball" and "Weather to Fly" don't distinguish themselves quite enough, their textural peerlessness remains. This is a beautiful sounding record. Their collaboration with Richard Hawley may be more of a curiosity than a thing of beauty, but the highs, the riffing cross-stitch of "Ground for Divorce", the desolate grandeur of "The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver" and the enlightened string-laden anthem "On a Day Like This" (like their own Sound of Music--only substitute the Alpine peaks for a Manchester high-rise) number amongst the best of their career. --James Berry

I listened to this on Spotify this morning while making and eating breakfast. It was good upbeat morning music but I doubt I will ever listen to it again. I like some of the Kooks but a little is enough.

On the laptop.

Their brand spanking new album, from 2011.

This is their first new studio album for 30 years. That's bad writer's block !!

It's often the case with this type of return that it would probably have been better to leave the legacy as it stood. Not the case here, as far as I'm concerned.

I've always thought this band were a cut above most of their peers, and Howard Devoto's writing is always interesting. The lyrics are as spiky and provocative as ever, and this is a high class set of Post-Punk songs.

Impressed me so much that it's completely queue-jumped the Buy List, and I've just ordered a copy...

Welcome back, Magazine.

I can almost always count on Elvis for a few great songs. No different here with four of them hitting that top
mark, countered with two duds. Close call on the favorite with It's Time winning out. His 17th album overall and
the final one in his contract with Warner, along with the last one where The Attractions have equal billing.
Although Elvis gets writing credits, four of these tracks were released by other artists prior to appearing here.
The Other End Of The Telescope by Til Tuesday, co-written with Aimee Mann, and You Bowed Down released by Roger
McGuinn. Both of those get my love mark. Also the title track and I Want To Vanish recorded by June Tabor, who I
have never heard. The title track also gets that final love mark. A collaboration with Paul McCartney of Shallow
Grave, gets the worst track for me. Sorry Mac and CH. Six singles were released with only It's Time charting, in
the U.K. at #58. The album, not much better, #28 in the U.K. and #53 in the states.

Worst Track - Shallow Grave

Best Track - It's Time

The party's over
Your time is up
You've had your last pointless teardrop
Washed down in that broken coffee cup
This magic moment concludes when that cigarette ends
Did you get what you wanted?
Well I suppose that depends
Well I suppose that depends
If you go, if you go
Where passion is squandered and money is spent
It's time, it's time
It's time, it's time
It's time, it's time, it's time
You must see it's time that you went
You must see it's time that you went

Our brief acquaintance was such a mistake
Now it seems more like a sentence
Or something you always had to fake
This magic moment concludes when they turn out the light
It's not the days when you leave me
But all I fear are the nights
But all I fear are the nights

Chorus

You told the same joke to me too many times
I wish that someone would hit it
Just before you reach
Just before you reach
Just before you reach the punchline

The party's over
Time we broke up
It always seemed like a bad dream
One where I finally woke up
This magic moment concluding our mutual fate
But if you do have to leave me
Who will I have left to hate?
Who will I have left to hate?

Chorus

Courtesy of Robbie again.

His second, from 2009.

Really liked the Barn Doors & Concrete Floors album that Robbie lent me previously, and this one is just as good.

Lush Alt-Country-Folk-Rock from an artist who just writes really appealing songs. Nothing here that was any less than highly enjoyable. Mrs Tiggi in particular liked this one.

Buy List cert...

A gift from a mate. Had not heard of him. Only semi popular in his Australian homeland. Male artist of the year twice there and platinum albums. McCartney sounding on some tracks, but more surprising for me was some Beck coming through (not Jeff) on the more out there tracks (Momo, Peepshow). Another artist too, that I can't quite nail. Love listening to someone I have never heard before and trying to figure out who they might sound like. Very nice use of strings on some tracks here. Loved three tracks and did not like three with the other eleven passing making it a good album. Alex's debut 1999 album Black The Sun got him an Australian best new artist award With the follow up Watching Angels Mend being his breakthrough. In 2006 Alex performed his hit Amazing, on Dancing With The Stars, which gave his career a boost, along with the release of this album of material pulled from his first four albums. This one made #34 on the Australian charts. His second studio of Watching The Angels Mend went to #2.

Best Track - Green

This house is your own
still living alone
it don’t make you sad
but I think it’s good to be green

The summer is gone
and spring don’t belong
the traces are here
for long winter
I miss the green
it used to be clean

If you want to be free
please don’t fall for me
I could be anyone
but your friend

If you open the door
I’ll give a whole lot more
I could be anyone anyone
Yeah

Assumption is good
though not likelihood
my feeling is true
I want to be
living with you

The truth it begins
we’re breathing it in
with shadows of doubt
in time we will
all miss the green
it used to be clean

If you want to be free
please don’t fall for me
I could be anyone
but your friend

If you open the door
I’ll give a whole lot more
I could be anyone
but your friend

Anyone Anyone
Anyone Nah Nah Nah no

Anyone Anyone
Anyone Yeah

If you want to be free
please don’t fall for me
I could be anyone
but your friend

If you open the door
I’ll give a whole lot more
I could be anyone
but your friend

Anyone Anyone
Anyone Nah Nah Nah no

Anyone Anyone
Anyone Yeah

seeing is believing
the feeling is deceiving
you know it’s the truth
when you find that you
can’t talk
leaving on this
all into chaos
seeing is feeling is seeing is
feeling is you
feeling is you woah

Nah Nah Nah no

Anyone Anyone
