Music Head Wrote:always interesting to hear the original
hadn't bothered but now I listened
thanks
wonder what turned Iggy on to it
not sure what turned Iggy on to it, but i do know that both Bowie and Iggy used to spend a lot of their time off in the late seventies/early eighties holidaying here in Australia...maybe one of them heard it on the radio or TV???. cant think how else he would have heard it as O'Keefe never scored a single chart entry outside of Australia

PAUL WELLER "button downs" cd,2003.
this is the third disc in a three set disc entitled "fly on the wall", each disc is a series of tracks from 1991-2001,the first two are collections of self composed b'sides and remixes, but this, the third disc contains twelve b-sides of singles and they are all cover versions...including Sonny & Cher, Ben Harper, Beatles, Traffic, CSNY, Etta James, Bobby Bland, Tim Hardin, Plastic Ono Band and Bob Dylan...
Weller has, in his solo years, always recorded the odd cover version of songs he likes, regardless of artist or genre, and for the most part does a reasonable effort in doing so.
only one on here i dont really like and that is Traffic's "feelin' alright"...one of the big surprises here is a cover of Ben Harper's "waiting on an angel"...Weller does it acoustically a sad/dour/solomn tone to his vocals.
the best tracks here are his cover of Sonny & Cher's "bang bang", which IMO is far supreior to the original version! and Etta James "i'd rather go blind"...which was recorded by total accident one night after returning to his studio drunk after being dumped by his then girlfriend...so with Weller on piano and his guitar tech on guitar they played it in the studio unaware that the tapes were still rolling from earlier in the evening..what we have is a priceless song full of emotion and genuine feeling to really compliment the lyrics of the song.
another great version here is a superb cover of Tim Hardin's folky Black Sheep Boy,which again is, IMO, better than the original!

Much preferred the previous album to this one. Seems the band got heavier with each outing. Love the leadoff track
of Animal Instinct. Not much to say after that with four tracks not even getting a like. I'm far from an expert on
this stuff, but for me, the music on a lot of this just totally drowns out the amazing voice of O'Riordan which is
my attraction in the first place. Also, horns seem out of place on some tracks. No surprise that I'm out of step
here, as the critics seemed to love it, and the public took it to #13 here and #7 in the UK. Singles were Animal
Instinct and Promises, neither of which charted here. Maybe it was the album cover that sold. Not sure what it
means, but pretty freaky.

Worst Track - Desperate Andy
Best Track - Animal Instinct
Suddenly something has happened to me
As I was having my cup of tea
Suddenly I was feeling depressed
I was utterly and totally stressed
Do you know you made me cry
Do you know you made me die
And the thing that gets to me
Is you'll never really see
And the thing that freaks me out
Is I'll always be in doubt
It is a lovely thing that we have
It is a lovely thing that we
It is a lovely thing, the animal
The animal instinct
So take my hands and come with me
We will change reality
So take my hands and we will pray
They won't take you away
They will never make me cry, no
They will never make me die
And the thing that gets to me
Is you'll never really see
And the thing that freaks me out
Is I'll always be in doubt
The animal, the animal, the animal instinct in me
It's the animal, the animal, the animal instinct in me
It's the animal, it's the animal, it's the animal instinct in me

BAND OF HORSES "infinate arms" cd,2010.
third album from these dudes from Seattle...
had never heard of these guys when i heard "laredo" on the radio...first thoughts were "crazy horse #2"...the guitar work was just so reminiscent of some of Neil Young's work, got the album purely on the strength of that one song...and its a pretty good one at that...
great harmonies and melodies here, similar in vein to Fleet Foxes and My Morning Jacket IMO, can also hear influences from CSNY,Neil Young,Byrds,Beach Boys in places.
great crisp, clear production on here also that does not detract from the overall sound one bit.
album hit top 10 in US and Australia and just missed out on a top20 placing in the UK...these guys have a bright future ahead of them if given the chance!

Can't get over how much he sounded like his dad on this debut. Even the music had John all over it. Never lived up
to that potential I guess, at least not with the music buying public. This has remained his best selling album
after reaching #17 in the states and #20 in the UK. Three love tracks for me with Valotte, On The Phone, and Too
Late For Goodbyes. Only one that falls short of a like with Let Me Be. Four singles were pulled from the album with
the highest charting here being my favorite of Too Late For Goodbyes which went to #5. Julian received a grammy
nomination for best new artist but lost out to Cyndi Lauper. I believe this album and the follow up are the only
ones I have. Had a release as recent as last year. Don't think a ripple from that one even made it to these shores.
Carry on Jude.

Ever since you've been leaving me
I've been wanting to cry
Now I know how it feels for you
I've been wanting to die
But it's much too late for goodbyes
Yes it's much too late for goodbyes
Time has gone since I've been with you
We've been starting to die
Now it seems you don't care for me
and I don't understand why
But it's much too late for goodbyes
Yes it's much too late for goodbyes
Ever since you've been far away
I've been wanting to fly
Now I know what you meant to me
I'm the one who should cry
And it's much too late for goodbyes
Yes it's much too late for goodbyes
Ever since you've been leaving me
I've been wanting to cry

Julian was a good artist IMO..but he was never going to escape the shadows of John, was he?!
Julian had four #1 hit singles here...Too Late For Goodbyes,Now You're In Heaven,Saltwater & I Dont Wanna Know
have three albums, Valotte, Mr.Jordan & Photograph Smile, the latter being the best one IMO

Thoughts from a preview listen back in July:
On the laptop.
1990 release from Howard Devoto (from Magazine), and Norman Fisher-Jones.
Devoto's vocals mean that this album has a definite Magazine feel about it, yet Fisher-Jones' music is more electronic than Magazine ever quite attained.
I'm a sucker for Devoto's work, so this is a definite Buy Lister. Unfortunately, the CD is currently unavailable. Good job I'm patient !!
AllMusic 4+/5 stars.
... and lo, it is available again !!

Posted the groups second album a couple weeks ago, which fared better than this one. They must have tuned up them
improvised instruments for that one. All of those sounds are present on this debut also but something didn't gel.
The album starts out with an awesome track but never reaches that level again. Side 1 does fare pretty well but the
group must have taken a siesta before flipping over my vinyl to record side 2. Three tracks I don't care for showed
up there dragging that grade down. That clip for the best one is superb though and is very much like most of the
second album. It shows the energy of the band in those early days. The band was formed in Hawaii but soon relocated
to Texas. A strange move, which explains the incorporation of both sounds you would imagine from those areas of the
country. As stated in the other review, the band is still around, and has again relocated, to Chicago this time,
picking up house music along the way. I probably wouldn't care for them now. Only two clips available for this
entire album, but that leadoff is worth the price of admission.

On the laptop.
Their debut, from 1978.
The embodiment of the spirit of Punk. Gloriously trashy songs, played by a band with very little experience of music-making.
Despite their limited musical capabilities, this is an album of good songs, and raw music that unfortunately they couldn't maintain for their next, and final, album.
Makes the Buy List.
RoviMusic 4+/5 stars.
