from my library (cd)
A gift from a mate. Another good one I had never heard of. Doesn't seem to have been active long as a solo artist.
Only showing three albums, of which this is his second and best known. Very Bowie-esque material and he does list
him as an influence, along with Beatles, Stones Who, Hendrix. This cd is a re-release of the 1980 original, of
which only the first 10 tracks here were included. The other six are listed as bonus tracks. Signed by Ringo's
label in 1977. Only one album released there which didn't do much. Became friends with Ringo though, and wrote some
tracks for his 1992 Time Takes Time album. Johnny moved to Elton Johns Rocket label for his follow up, this album,
which saw the most success in Australia. Peter Gabriel has a guest spot on the hit Screaming Jets, along with some
of his band members for the album. After the dismal performance of the follow up to this album Johnny gave up his
solo career for just writing. Penned songs for Starship, Cheap Trick and Asia. One other contribution of note was
as the Humble Pie vocalist at the Steve Marriott memorial concert in 2001. No chart action either here or in the
UK. Must have all taken place down under.

The Moon is a Dead Word-Gospel
Amazing album that finally finds the missing link between screamo and progressive rock. The musicianship is amazing, very much in the vein of King Crimson, but it has aall this catharsis of a good post hardcore album

Their third album, from 2001.
Got back in touch with this band a while back when they released their first album for 10 years. Decided then that I'd have to get this to complete the set.
For the most part the songs are drowsy tales of love, loss, & hopelessness. Isobel Monteiro is a great song-writer that always seems to find a different way of approaching the subject matter.
Fairly confident recommendation for anyone with a liking for Mazzy Star...
RoviMusic 4+/5 stars.

MODEST MOUSE "good news for people who love bad news" cd,2004.
the first of two MM albums i bought from my Xmas voucher purchases...had never heard of these guys before my trip to Hotel Paint Lick, dont like this ons as much as the one that will follow this one shortly(we were dead before the ship even sank), but a good album nevertheless... hey, gotta love their album titles, just wish i could give them a score for them!
Johnny Marr(the smiths) appears on this album, although his parts are not as "smiths-like" as one would expect...quite subdued infact.
a nice easy listening(for the most part) collection of indi pop sounds here....
if you like your pop on a slightly quirky side, then this album is for you.
album reached #18 Stateside and #40 in the UK, didnt chart here whatsoever, one single made the charts in Float On which only reached #68 US, #46 UK...a real shame as these guys deserve better than that!
album gets two loves, nine likes and three dislikse giving a score of 1.9.

^ honestly, that was a really bad starting place, really their worst. Check out "The Lonesome Crowded West" or "The Moon and Antarctica"
anyways, New Order-Power Corruption, and Lies
I want to like this one, but I can't. It just sounds boring and dated to me :/

i always thought New Order and Joy Division sounded dated back in the day....that said, Blue Monday and Love Will Tear Us Apart havent faired to badly over the decades

ELVIS COSTELLO "blood and chocolate" cd,1986.
an often overlookked album in the vast Costello back catalogue IMO....didnt sell very well at the time in comparrison to the rest of his albums....guessing the dark subject matter of his recent divorce had a lot to do with it...
all the tracks are lyrically full of hate and blame for his wife walking out on him.
the music, however, marks a return to the old days of classic Attractions albums of the late 1970s...probably dur to the fact that mentor and partner in crime Nick Lowe is here twiddling the knobs in the studio. sort of sounds like a more mature "armed forces" and "my aim is true" than his more country styled albums of the mid 1980s. pretty hard to decide which track is my favourite here, either "uncomplicated" or "next time round", but i went for the latter.
all up, another very good set from "mr.consistantly reliable" Elvis Costello.
i always look at what allmusic rates albums at after i give my score and on this occasion we are both spot on at 4/5(2.4)!

I think one would be hard pressed to find a bad Elvis Costello album ! His established formula for good melodic songs and story telling is impeccable ! I really enjoy Get Happy ! Before posting I did think this might fit on your soft music list, Steve. For the most part it certainly would, but there are a couple of slightly noisier songs...
I think you'd like it either way.
