What Are You Listening To?
Wasa Wasa-Edgar Broughton Band

Some seriously heavy and mega stoned out psych rock, with some really awesome playing. The vocals are clearly very much inspired by General Beefheart (yes, he's a general, not a measly captain)

JOHN LENNON "lennon" 4cd boxset, cd,1991

disc 1.

pretty much all of his official recordings from 69-70 here, and apart from five average live tracks, this is a cracker IMO..
its Lennon in his greatest period, the entire "plastic ono band" album is on this disc...
pretty difficult to single out one track above the others to be called best track here, from the pain drenched "mother",through "cold turkey","instant karma!", "working class hero", the controversial "god" track, the peace anthems "give peace a chance" and "power to the people" to the sublime "isolation"...this disc has it all IMO,showing a true musical genius at work free from the constraints of The Beatles...and in stark contrast to the solo music Macca was putting out around the same time, no im not criticising Paul McCartney's first two solo outings...they are very good IMO, as is George's "all things must pass"(minus that 'apple jam' crap!)
im not posting links for these tracks as we all pretty well know them...

I LOVE THIS DISC

without those average live tracks this would have got a "2.8" rating!

SteveO Wrote:Wow ! ..thanks for this Jerome !!!..you've made my Sunday an enjoyable one indeed my friend..beautiful and powerful music throughout the entire 23 minutes ! Intersting that Benoit David ( CANADIAN, eh !) sounds very close to Jon Anderson so as not to detract from the YES sound ! Brilliant piece of work !

I ordered Fly From Here a few minutes ago !

Comes with a DVD of the making of the album as well - something I always like to see.

Genesis - Seconds Out - one of my all-time favourite live albums with superb drumming from Bruford, Collins and Thompson. This was their last great performance before they slipped off the edge into Hollywoodland with songs about not being able to dance and all those bland videos and silly pop lyrics about nothing in particular. Of course they did it for the money and who can blame them, but they really should have returned to more experimental stuff once the bank accounts had been topped up. Instead all they did was rehash the old classics for world tours etc. - to top up the bank accounts once again naturally. Pity really. By the way I am going to be shot down in flames here, but I did not like Genesis, when Gabriel was in the band, even though he was responsible for a lot of the material on offer. He was 100 tiimes better as a solo performer. If you ever get the chance watch a DVD called 'Secret World'. Quite incredible what he came up with.

Always hated that lame looking picture of Elton. Looks so staged or fake or something. But most of the music works
so who gives a shit? Only thing I can't handle is that Solar Prestige A Gammon. Guess it means something but not to
me. Five love traks for me with Ticking leading the way. Hard to give Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me second
billing but Ticking's a little deeper. Some notable guest appearances on the album with Carl Wilson, Bruce
Johnston, Dusty Springfield, and Toni Tenille. Hey, Toni was ok, it was that damn Captain guy that sucked. Tower Of
Power horns give the album some additional kick. This was Elton's eighth album and his fourth U.S. #1, 3rd in the
U.K. Strange that the Sun single only reached #16 over there, while a #2 here. The Bitch Is Back performed about
the same, #15 and #4. The album was #1 everywhere as Elton was at his peak.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Solar Prestige A Gammon

Best Track - Ticking

"An extremely quiet child" they called you in your school report
"He's always taken interest in the subjects that he's taught"
So what was it that brought the squad car screaming up your drive
To notify your parents of the manner in which you died

At St. Patricks every Sunday, Father Fletcher heard your sins
"Oh, he's unconcerned with competition he never cares to win"
But blood stained a young hand that never held a gun
And his parents never thought of him as their troubled son

"Now you'll never get to Heaven" Mama said
Remember Mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Grow up straight and true blue
Run along to bed"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

They had you holed up in a downtown bar screaming for a priest
Some gook said "His brain's just snapped" then someone called the police
You'd knifed a Negro waiter who had tried to calm you down
Oh you'd pulled a gun and told them all to lay still on the ground

Promising to hurt no one, providing they were still
A young man tried to make a break, with tear-filled eyes you killed
That gun butt felt so smooth and warm cradled in your palm
Oh your childhood cried out in your head "they mean to do you harm"

"Don't ever ride on the devil's knee" Mama said
Remember mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Pay your penance well, my child
Fear where angels tread"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

Within an hour the news had reached the media machine
A male caucasian with a gun had gone berserk in Queens
The area had been sealed off, the kids sent home from school
Fourteen people lying dead in a bar they called the Kicking Mule

Oh they pleaded to your sanity for the sake of those inside
"Throw out your gun, walk out slow just keep your hands held high"
But they pumped you full of rifle shells as you stepped out the door
Oh you danced in death like a marionette on the vengeance of the law

"You've slept too long in silence" Mama said
Remember Mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Crazy boy, you'll only wind up with strange notions in your head"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

George Michael does a version of Dont Let The Sun Go Down On Me, which is IMO as good if not better than Elton's original
