I guess I have always had a soft spot or preference for the female voice ! Overall I seek out female artists FIRST with a few exceptions of course. I have many male vocalists in my collection also.
Some favorites are Bessie Smith,Billie Holiday,Nico,Janis Joplin, Karen Dalton, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Linda Perhacs, Joni Mitchell, Chrissie Hynde, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Florence Welsh + Machine, Beth Hart, Etta James, Koko Taylor, Patti Smith,Laurie Anderson, Celine Dion, KD Lang, Adele, Alannis Morisette,Leona Lewis, Meredith Monk, Tina Turner, Imelda May,Lucinda Williams, Judee Sill, Bjork, Lykke Li, EMA, PJ Harvey, Pink, Feist, Lauryn Hill, Lady Gaga, Wendy Williams....etc...lol

I would guess that I have more Female vocals in my collection than male, but I generally consider the voice as another instrument. So I look for voices that go together with the music being played and don't concern myself with the gender.

good thread SteveO!
i guess probably 80% of my music is by male vocalists...no reason why though...
but as long as the artist male or female has a good voice and or good lyrics then i really dont care...its the song that counts

I tend to favor female voices too but there are some great male voices that I have heard too and I enjoy them so much. For me, I would love to see Leona Lewis, Adele,Joss Stone, and Natasha Bedingfield do some music together.

I feel female vocalists always try way to hard to sound "quirky". It does work for some, take the beautiful Joanna Newsom for example, but it's usually just pretty grating, so I'll take male vocals on this debate

Joanna is another one I like, Laura Marling, Virginia Astley, Marianne Faithful. Christine Perfect....I quess by quirky you mean the "quirky" singing of Bjork, Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), Beth Gibbons (Portishead), Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) or Laurie Anderson types which I love??? mtthwibrahim Wrote:I feel female vocalists always try way to hard to sound "quirky". I feel that certain genders fit certain types of songs and are great in their own rights. Some female performers can be really great belters and have fantastic projection (cue - Witney Houston - RIP). However, the only thing that really tends to irritate me about female vocalists are the artists who feel they have to hit every note, in every octive in one bar. It just sounds too unnatural sounding and messy for me, but each to their own I guess.
