What Are You Listening To?
from my library (vinyl)

Not up to the early albums for me, with no great tracks on this tenth release. The last one to make the top 100 at
#35. A breakup of a couple of years prior to this release led to the addition of new members Steve Morse and Billy
Greer. More of a hard rock sound to me. Sure missing that violinist guy. All I Wanted was the single that kicked it
off and reached #19. More of a Foreigner sound there. Title track was also a weak #84 single and the groups last
one to chart. The more I listen, the less this sounds like the Kansas that grabbed my attention in the late 70's.
Should have called themselves something else on the reforming. Some state I don't like would have been preferable.
The band continued for four more albums, but this was the last for me.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Musicatto

Best Track - Taking In The View

The world began to change the children moved and they had children
It was all arranged you couldn't live there anymore
All you had was that old place in the middle of the path of progress
So they took the space and put the ceiling on the floor
In one of the rooms all the walls were blue
It was hidden so well that no one knew
Just the place for taking in the view

The view of the sea crisp and clear and never ending
There your soul ran free there you spirit soared
The view took you away to the boundaries of imagination
Back to yesterday back to once before
In one of the rooms all the walls were blue
A mysterious space without a clue
Just the place for taking in the view

Long lives need no fortune
Hard lives need no fame
Young lives seek their freedom
And old lives seek the same

The world began to change and without a word of explanation
Something very strange started beckoning to you
When they came to move your things you had packed a suitcase full of memories
Nothing else to bring except a different point of view
In one of the rooms all the walls were blue
A mysterious space without a clue
Just the place for taking in the view

Another one of those artists who you just don't realize how good they were until you here a collection. Has to be one of the greatest female rock vocalists. Don't remember any of Pat's studio albums being all that great, but this is. What I would call a singles artist. Seven tracks I love on this twelve track set. Pulled from seven albums from '79 -'88. Weird that this album peaked at #67 in the U.S. and #6 in the U.K. Thought she was bigger than that here. Must not have been a push on this as Pat is a four time grammy winner with 19 top 40 singles. Three additional tracks on the cd version of this. I was cheated. Not sure what Pat's biggest hit was, just remember most of these getting tons of airplay, both radio and MTV. Some distracting videos of which I was never a fan, but the music was great. Best for me on this listen is one of Pat's softer numbers, One Love. Must have been a chore for her to be so laid back.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Promises In The Dark

Best Track - One Love

Once there was a man, and he lived to sing the lions song
As he traveled on road of hope
One Love is the light, shining over every mountain top
It will lead us to the higher ground
One day every heart will beat strong against the night
Let it be done right now
Once there was a man, and his words became a song of love
And his song became the golden dream
One Love is the light, shining over everyone that believes
It will lead us to the higher ground
One day every eye will see truth before the light
Let it be done right now

Some wait, so long
Because our love is strong
This hard road traveled on
Will lead us home, forever

Hear the lion's song, voices cryin' like a desert wind
Yeh he's gone unto his father's land
Afrika tonight, for we truly are one in our hearts
Colors woven in the golden dream

One day every eye will see truth before the light
Let it be done right now
One day every voice will speak strong against the night
Let us be one right now
So let it be

We are the children of a thousand days
We are the people of the hard rain
We are the children of a thousand days
We are the people of the hard rain
We are the people of the hard rain

Worth getting? - definitely. My favourite of theirs. Has the classic 'Southern Cross' on it as well as 'Daylight Again'. Surprised you don't have 4 Way Street. Mr Young is good on that.

CSN were always one of those groups i put on the back burner even though i cant fault "deja vu"

ive looked at "4 way street" on numerous occasions but its only available as an import double disc here...$50(35pounds)...cant really justify that price for a cd

That one I do remember well, for Stephen Stills hating it so much. I remember years ago in Creem magazine he actually said it wasn't good because they made mistakes all over it. There's even one song where they start it up singing two different bits at the same time, possibly as an inside joke. There also seemed to be a lot of material that didn't make it out other than maybe solo albums, always thought of it as a sampler.

Very happy you liked the Stills album, Crazy!!!! That's the whole objective of MD..sharing music!!!

and I know what you mean regarding Stills' output versus Neil's....Neil wins by a long shot!!!!!

STEPHEN STILLS "stephen stills" cd,1970.

SteveO is going to like this after he posted it a while ago, then reccomended it to me.....
i guess in bands, you pick a favourite member and love them and tend to dismiss other members who diss the one you love, Floyd fans tend to be either Gilmour or Waters fans,Bealtes fans are generally Macca or Lennon fans...the same for me with Buffalo Springfield...always dismissed Stills but as you know...i love Neil Young, but things are changing now.
even though Stills and Young are complete control freaks with attitude i always thought Stills was an AH and wouldnt let myself entertain the idea that he was the equal of Young after Springfield split up in the late 1960s...
anyway,
this debut solo album was recorded around the same time as the classic CSNY "deja vu" set, it has bits of pop, blues, folky acoustic material and with help from friends Clapton,Hendrix,Crosby,
Nash,Mama Cass to name a few it couldnt really be anything but a classic album IMO. im still not keen on Stephen's vocal abilities at times but i got to admit his guitar playing is absolutely sublime on the rockier bluesy tracks here....looks like ive got to look a bit further into his solo career now as this is a cracker of an album overall.
i guess the problem i have with Stills is that he never evolved over time, he just seemed to play the same sounds on everything i have heard from Buffalo Springfield,Stills-Young Band and CSN, whereas Neil Young chopped and changed throughout his career(some downright aweful material but at least he was thinking and testing out different things!).
when i saw CSN the other week he did do "love the one you youre with" live within the set and it was brilliant, still dont quite like it as much as The Isley Brothers version i also own, but it is still worthy of "***" on here, shame there is one track i do not like, but the others more than make up for that little blemmish!

Almost worth it for the cover art alone. Plus the cute little pop up on the inside. Man I miss vinyl covers. I
didn't really latch on to Tull until Benefit. From there on, brilliant. This is their second album, good but not
great for me. Two great tracks in A New Day Yesterday and my favorite, We Used To Know. One instrumental, Bouree,
that I can't make up any lyrics to, so all I can do is tap my foot to some cool music and picture Anderson with
some cool moves. Didn't know that was a reworking of a Bach composition. Martin Barre replaces Mick Abrahams on
lead guitar. A welcome addition who would become a mainstay for Tulls duration. This album was a #1 in the U.K. and
#20 in the states. For me the best was yet to come. Tull has always been one of my favorites of the 70's.
Interesting 1969 Bell Telephone ad at the end of the live clip of Bouree.

Worst Track - Bouree

Best Track - We Used To Know

Whenever I get to feel this way,
try to find new words to say,
I think about the bad old days
we used to know.

Nights of winter turn me cold --
fears of dying, getting old.
We ran the race and the race was won
by running slowly.

Could be soon we'll cease to sound,
slowly upstairs, faster down.
Then to revisit stony grounds,
we used to know.

Remembering mornings, shillings spent,
made no sense to leave the bed.
The bad old days they came and went
giving way to fruitful years.

Saving up the birds in hand
while in the bush the others land.
Take what we can before the man
says it's time to go.

Each to his own way I'll go mine.
Best of luck with what you find.
But for your own sake remember times
we used to know.
